Hazing

Recommended Posts

Hi folks. I'm guessing you've heard about the Windsor Spitfires and the amount of trouble the coaches and management are in because they turned a blind eye to hazing.

Obviously, it's all about where you draw the line on rookie initiation and a degrading haze.

I've been around sports all my life (I'm 34) and have witnessed a lot of things I think crossed the line.

Carrying gear bags, giving them a funny hair cut, making them wear a dress on one part of road trip are all okay in my books.

Anything involving the insertion of foreign objects into body cavities is going way too far.

Thoughts?

JJ

EDIT: I took my specific hazing examples out because I don't want to give anyone ideas. <_<

I agree, there's the tradition of doing things to humiliate/break someone down and then there's just criminal crap.

I've read articles about hazing and the prevailing attitude of those doing the hazing was, "It's just boys being boys...."

Well, I know quite a few men who didn't think of these things, let alone act upon it, when they were younger. So we'd need to put an adjective in front of the 'boys.' Somewhere between misguded to sadistic. Thus, let's say, "It's just misguided to sadistic boys being misguided to sadistic boys..."

Worse yet is it might actually be only two guys ringleading, but the rest are too scared to stop them, because inately they realize they'd be next if they said anything.

Agreed. It goes along the same lines of any type of prank. For example: While many kids have toilet-papered houses, you get the few bad apples who'd rather use gasoline and torch the house. You're always going to have the few morons who take things too far and the morons need to be disciplined.

they definetly crossed the line by doing this. our high school teams make the freshman line up naked in the shower and smack them with one of those frat paddles. thank God they liked me and i was a rookie as a sophmore and i didn't have to do that. i think thats pushing it anyways

i think there is a place for hazing. i do belive it brings a team together but cramming a bunch of naked guy and a bus bathroom just not right. little things like making the rookies pick up the pucks and fill water bottels you know stuff like that.

I just don't get the homo-erotic nature of almost all hazing now. Whatever happened to making them put on a dress for a roadtrip or having them serve the beer?

Or going into the Purple Onion and buying "Blue Boy," a gimp mask and something I can't even describe in less than a rated-R way.

Personally, I think hazing is total bullshit. Make the rookie buy the beer, make the rookie buy dinner, make the rookie carry all the sticks to the bench, etc. That's fine.

Why should anyone be forced to let others humiliate them?

Why should rookies let themselves be degraded before being accepted by the rest of the team?

Why should rookies be subjected to embarrassment and sexual humiliation as a "rite of passage"?

Shouldn't people be trying to bring their teammates up rather than put them down?

This whole bullshit about "it could have been worse" makes me sick. Just because they could have been further humiliation doesn't mean that what someone has gone through isn't wrong.

In gangs there is a form of hazing that involves the new member being beaten by the others. Would that be considered okay in team hazing? Nope.

The emotional scars that rookies could carry after being hazed could feel worse than a beating ever could.

I agree reaper. Shit like stuffing them all into a bus bathroom or some other unmentionables is just stupid. I think there's a big difference between hazing for the sake of "lets mess with these new kids" and doing something that makes you feel part of the group because it's something everyone had to go through. Having to all get naked in a bus bathroom is just so everyone can laugh. Having to go into the bar and order a candy apple while wearing a dress is different because you know every other guy on the team did it, and you can laugh about it later.

some kids just dont see how badly they are hurting the kids they are hazing either. They think its just a joke but the kid whose getting hazed can really take it seriously. I've heard situations where the kids being hazed have actually killed them selves or become very depressed

I duno alot of this stuff with hockey teams making the freshman strip down why would you wanna do things like that with naked men i mean making them wear a dress would be hilarious but i think it would be gross to smack them naked with a paddle or whatever other weird things they do. It just makes them seem like homosexuals

Wow thats B.S. Ive known what hazing IS but IVe never seen it occur or even hear about it. Not in my town or any of the other Central illinois hockey teams because we all play together and are friends. Im 15 and Im at the age where y ou guys are talking about and...The guys on my hockey team are my main friends and i hang out with them everyday. I dont see how any body could do that to a team mate, and having to see that person three times a week on ice. I guess Im luckier then i thought.

and at my age we dont want to have coaches in the locker room, wanna talk about stuff. but if this crap is going on then i think we need to go back to the peewee rules and have a different parent bring snacks every practice with a coach in the locker room.

Agreed with everyone who's posted so far. There needs to be a level that all the vets know you can't go past. I already had a bit of my rookie hazing go down, and all of it has been cool with me. All of the guys on my team are chillin guys and they know what's a push and what isnt, plus since its prep if they push it too far they get the boot..

theres only one hazing ritual that im agreeable on. all the rookies are put into a room with a crazy amount of alcohol and they cant leave until its all gone. ive heard of ones where the guys are put in the bathroom naked and told to get dressed. i dont think anythings wrong with it because hazings been going on for so long that this is the first time the medias actually seen it

I just read online that Darcy Tucker finds this story out of Windsor "amusing" while Wayne Gretzky says there is absolutely no place for it in sports. This info about each guy's ideas doesn't surprise me.

I don't think the alcohol one is appropriate either. What if someone has an alergy to alcohol? What if it's against their religion to drink? What if they are against drinking? That doesn't help with team bonding at all, because they're not going to want to do it and it's just going to cause conflicts.

the putting guys in the bathroom naked thing is brutal, but one of my good friends had to do an even worse variation of that. He got put in there with 6 other naked rookies and none of them could leave the bathroom until they had evidence that they were finished...

If any of that ever happened to me i would quit that team, and trust me my friends would follow weather it happened to them or not. and then the team would not be able to happen. leaving the dicks team less.

On the rigs they make the new guys go pick up and have sex with a male prostitute for "initiation", if you think that's so bad.
