stick for tall player

Recommended Posts

Anyone have a recommendation for a stick for tall players? I need a new stick and unfortunately the local selection is very thin. I am 6'4" and I am wondering should I worry about the length of the stick. Most sticks are 3 - 4" below my chin with my skates on. I have only been playing for two years and I am still developing my shot but I really have no idea how to pick a stick. I have heard the Sherwood 9950's are tall, but is there any OPS out there that are taller than others?

Go rbk or ccm. There composite shaft is as long as say eastons shaft with the plug in. The ccm/rbk's just have a lil cap at the end of the shaft. so if you needed to make it really long then you could put a plug in after you take the cap out.

In the wood category, the Sherwood 9950, Easton Z-Carbon, and CCM V60 are great choices for tall players.

3-4 inches below your chin is actually an okay height. I don't know how it is

elsewhere, but I have noticed that kids are playing with longer sticks nowadays.

Before the standard recommendation for stick length was between your chin and your nose while standing flat. Somewhere along the line, parents and proshop guys started witht he cute "On your toes--up to your nose" rhyme, and all the kids who come to our store do that now. I mostly play defence, and my stick touches between my chin and lower lip while I'm standing flat in my shoes. Many kids that are 6" shorter than me have their sticks longer than mine.

Of course there are personal preferences, skating style etc. but in general I've noticed a bad trend towards long sticks, and while skating kids are bending their knees less as a result.

I see the exact opposite for the most part around here. Everyone is using a shorter stick as a crutch to make up for bad hands. I've accepted that I have bad hands, so I use a longer stick so I feel more comfortable passing and shooting.

I am 6'4" also, All i do is put extension in all my sticks. It makes them weigh more slightly, but its worth it...... Coz i cant stick handel with a small stick <_<

Ps. Just wondering how much u weigh coz ur the same hight as me tmj1881! I am 195 pounds, 13.14 stone. I want to be 200+ tho B)

Using a stick that is too long will actually give you WORSE hands. If you can't stickhandle with a proper-length stick, PRACTICE. It's the only way you will get better.

I dont think my stick is too long, I was told that your stick should be between your nose and chin when standing without skates. When using a stick that is smaller than that i dont feel right

Sounds like you use a proper-length stick. If you want to go shorter, try cutting off 1/4" to 1/2" at a time off your extension. Also, the lie of your blade comes into effect here--with a lower lie (4.5, 5) you can get away with a longer stick. A higher lie (6, 6.5) might force you to use a shorter stick. It's all what feels right, and what's best for your mechanics and style.

Montreal Nitro. That thing is like 6' tall stock... Another thing you can do is get a vapor 15 shaft or a synthesis and use a long hosel tapered blade in it.

i heard stick length is all personal preference, is that true?

Yes, but your lie is dictated by your stick length.

So using a stick that is at the middle of my forehead off skates is wrong??

Generally, yes but everyone is different.

I'm 6'3" and I like my stick at my chin barefoot. It's personal preference. Another "rumor has it" is that Gretzky used to keep shortening his stick throughout the season. Advantage of a shorter stick is keeping the puck closer to you instead of another player.

I also have my stick around there, maybe a bit taller. I am a defenceman, and I'm just used to it, I dont think I could use a shorter stick..(Under my chin or nose)
