If I owned an NHL team, I wouldn't allow this. Pay the dude millions and then he goes out there in an ancient pair of pads with no protection and pops a shoulder out, killing my chances at playoff revenue? No way! Same with visors. Wear one or I'll have you traded to Chicago and doom you to a career of never making the playoffs.

The NHL is the only corporation where the employees and their union fight against safety, its ridiculous.

But half of the league wears stuff like this.

Some guys go out there and wear huge football-style shoulder pads and knock out their opponent with it. Those are the ones you should worry about.

Plenty of guys played with pads like this for years before the big linebacker pads started coming out, some still do. Worked fine for them, not like everyones shoulders were being torn apart prior to the mid 90's.

:( When you play like Bertuzzi you don't need shoulder pad's-You just hit people from behind when they aren't looking, just ask Moore!!!

Wouldn't matter much if he had brand new gear -HE STILL STINKS!!!

Well that seals the deal.

I knew I was out of touch....but this much?

My shoulder pads cratered at the end of the last game of the season last spring. They were at least 24 years old and one of the caps just fell off.....I didn't even notice until I took my jersey off and it was no longer held in place.

I tossed them in the bucket in the room without even thinking, and bought new ones for this year WITHOUT EVEN REALIZING that I should have had them repaired. They could have been my ticket to the show.

"Hey guys, can I play? Look at these"

Yeah right. That may be the way for those guys with talent, but a no-talent hack like me needs to protect himself from himself. I need the big ones for veering into the boards and it is important to keep the lhs afloat.

Plus the new ones just smell so nice!

I kinda like buying new stuff....it makes up for all the years when I never bought anything.

haha, those are sweet...I had the same pair before I stopped wearing shoulder pads, I probably got them 15-16 years ago :P

Speaking of old equipment, does anybody remember Butch Goring's helmet? Apparently he got it when he was 12 and just painted it to match his teams' colour, even when he turned pro...

(see 4th paragraph)

I've had the same set of shoulder pads for 5 years now and I'm in grade 11, and I've had the same helmet for 8 years, it's practically not black any more:).

As long as the guys with the big pads are on my team, I don't worry. :P

Yes, some of the new equipment is so large and so hard that it can be used as a weapon. But then the league should take measures to combat that like they did with elbow pads.

Ive had Itech soulders since my first year squirts and that was back in 1998-1999.I just got new RBK 6K but havent even used them yet.Theres nothing like old broken in shoulders. The right shoulder cap fell off,and the straps all broke and the liner is deteriorating, but that was all fixed and they should be good for another season.
