Crazy Otto 0 Report post Posted March 27, 2006 This might be the first time in history anyone's been excited about travelling to Buffalo NY, but that's where the girls U19 national championships are being played this week. Last year it was in Denver, next year it's in San Jose (after my daughter has graduated and goes to college, so we won't be there).LinkHer team (Washington Pride) is considered strong, although not necessarily one of the favorites to win it all. They made it to the quarterfinals last year, but lost to the two teams that ultimately advanced to the championship game. They've been practicing hard on the ice Saturday, Sunday and again tonight, then they travel Tuesday to Buffalo. They have a morning skate at Niagara University on Wednesday, then they play their first game Wednesday night. There are three round-robin games, then the teams with the best records advance to the finals round this weekend which is single-elimination. There's an Easton Skills Competition, and a lot of other hoopla - last year some of the games were audiocast over the web, which was cool. It's been exciting watching the girls get psyched up for this. They're believing in themselves, and they know that this is it - no more games this year, and for many these are their last games together before heading off to college. Events like those are going to dig a bigger hole between North America and Euro women's hockey i think. I may be wrong but i doubt such events exist in Europe. They have a event called the European Cup, which is a prolonged weekend where the best womens teams in Europe meet.I heard a statistic at the Olympics, the commentator said there was around 85000 female hockey players in the world and 55000 of them were Canadien...
