ONEGoal November 2007 tradeshow

I agree with jimmy. July and August is the equipment push for travel hockey players. They are the core of the business. They have the disposable income to spend on new gear and NEED it then. We have been selling skates in July like its 10* out and the pond just froze over! Vender lurkers: You have been warned!!!!!!

Key phrase- "disposable income", take it back to your marketing department and your accounts payable department. If you can't figure this one out, there is nothing that will save this industry.

I thought Toronto was January 07 and Detroit November 07?

Yeah, I must have typed that in backwards. Sorry.

Is the Toronto show open to the public? If not, how would I go about getting in? Do you have to be a retailer?

Last time it was in Toronto it wasn;t open to the public but it turned into a zoo with all the kids running around and the idiots with cameras complaining if you actually picked up a piece of gear.

i have been against the thought of a november show, since the idea came up a few years ago, i am however not against Detroit (selfish reasons). but after some thought, the show as it stands now, is useless. it is not a "writing" show as it used to be in the 80's and 90's. jan/feb is about the worst time for a show. that being said, most reps are hitting the streets in NOV/DEC anyways with new samples, showing product, then you go to the show and do the same thing, then have to chase orders. maybe at least, this will allow the reps to "show" the product to the dealers, then chase orders Jan-March. unless they make this show in late Feb or early March... it will not be a true "writing" show.

as for open to the public... biggest mistake the industry can make. they are going to allow retail consumers see product that won't be available for 6-8 months. touch, feel, questions. and even though they will be told "this is not coming out til next summer" all the kids will run into the stores in Nov and Dec asking all the dealers.... can i get this for christmas??? causing much commotion for the dealers, and in turn, making more current inventory sit on the shelf, when it shoud be sold at christmas. all because some superstar that thinks the new TWO90 will be better for them, and they will wait til next year to buy. HUGE MISTAKE!!!

One of my retailers told me this exact same thing this week.

Well now, that just finishes it for me. I've been reading this thread carefully, trying to figure out why someone would schedule this show at that time... and the only thing I thought of was perhaps the consumer pre-christmas was the ONE redeeming thing. Wow, this even disrupts THAT.

Does anyone know what their thinking was on setting this date? Afterall, they DID have some reasoning behind it. Whatever it was, it doesn't seem to work from anyone's p.o.v.: not the manufacturer, the retailer or the consumer.

i will add to JR's post. Manufacturers, especially the Skate companies, want more time for feedback from reps/retailers, and also allow as JR said, time to get "completed" product to the market on time.

the problem (the way i see it) is that product used to be show in the beginning of the year, and booked at that time by the stores. product was built to fulfill orders, and maybe some backstock produced. goods were shipped late summer, and product was sold for 4-6 months (mostly preseason, and christmas). dealers/manufacturers sold out of goods, and then they repeated it the next year.

Now we have early product launches... the big dealers get product in march/april in some cases. or even better, new product released right before christmas which means the current year model that's on the shelf, will stay on the shelf, cuz a 1 day old product just became available.

manufacturers are building in the orient, based on hopefull sales numbers, but still have to hit order minimums, so they over buy, plus they offer 5 models of product vs. 3 models (which is all a company really needs). 2 or 3 models sell, and the rest sit, so now they close out product, which will only go to 10% (if that) of the retail base. now that dealer is selling product at christmas for damn near what the other retailers paid for the product. so they now lose money on product that they booked 8 months before. they will not make money on it now, and end up closing up shop.

It worked before, there's no reason it couldn't work again. and for the consumer that says "but i gotta have newest and best" well, sorry, you will have to wait 2 more months and you can then get it. if all manufacturers chopped the catalogs, stuck to what they are good at, lowered ordering numbers, stopped closing out crap, and shipped all orders at roughly the same time to ALL dealers, we would have a much better market.

just my 2 cents worth, from watching this industry change from a great/profitable one, to a starving, flooded MESS!!!

Yup, as soon as word gets out about a new product, no one wants the old stuff (yea right, old...., the retailer had it in his store for a whole 3 months),. The consumer will wait it out for the new product, screwing the retailer of normal sales.

Just had a thought regarding the Toronto and Detroit shows....

Not sure where this currently sits, but the US government has been making noises about requiring a passport. Canada hasn't been too happy about it - not wanting anything to impede those US tourist $'s coming into the Great White North - but I gather they have, or are close to, reaching agreement on the issue.

So guess anyone from either country had better apply for a passport in the near future. I believe the backlog in Canada is about 9 months; for obvious reasons have no idea how long it takes to receive an American passport.

I haven't heard anything about any of this. Regardless, it took me a month to get mine, while some friends have gotten theirs within a couple of weeks.

January 2008 is when it will become mandatory! however, metro detroit mayors, and windsor area mayors are trying to come up with a seperate form, or code on drivers license to create easy travel back and forth for local residents.

Because the Toronto show is not open to the public, and I don't work in a hockey store, how would I go about getting in?

Or just get a job at one if that will get you in.

Expedited service is supposed to take 2 weeks, mine took five days. Regular service is about 6-8 weeks.

I got mine in one day. It was a pain in the ass, b/c I had to drive to Hartford, CT (from northern NJ) and wait up there for it to be processed, but I got it none the less.

Unless you are a professinal traveling on business from Canada to the US (including all Pro Athletes) you must have a picture and fingerprints done as of August 28th.

Handed down last week!

Semi-off topic....

With the big OneGoal Hockey show in TO during early Jan 07, is anybody still going to LetsPlayHockey show in Vegas in late Jan 07?

For us West Coasters, Vegas was always a little easier on travel.
