One90 Transition and Skate Profiling

Recommended Posts

Hey JR, after reading this thread I was really interested in having my skates profiled but in the right way and having somebody watch me skate. So I went to my LHS and was shootin the shit with the guy and asked him about profiling. I asked if they came out to the rink, which is literally down the street, to watch customers skate and get a feel for their skating methods. The guy said no and that they really didn't have to. He told me that the bars he has is a 9ft radius and is preset for all skaters from puberty to 6'4 and 255 lbs. After the 255 lb limit it would bump to a 10ft radius. Is this guy a quack or does he kind of know what he's doing? I really was hoping he would come out and watch, I'd pay the extra money but o well.

Wow, I don't think that guy really knows what he is doing when it comes to radius work. To put that wide range of people on only a 9ft radius is insane. Its obvious that he does not take into consideration the other factors like runner size, skate size and the position the skater playes on the ice.

Where'd hockeymom go by the way?

She's been busy - back to lurk mode for the summer.

You guys notice when I'm not around? Wow, I'm touched. I lurk... gotta get my fix. Been busy and sneaking around behind MissD's back to practice MY cross-overs. She is threatening to post a vid... and, no way is THAT happening...lol

That's what all of the shops do here, but they do 11 and 13'.

Never profile by position - defensemen skate forward too...profile to the skater.

Well, I'm considering the S15's - I assume w/ the huge price difference here in the US that any sale you might have couldn't compare to what we get them for down here - correct? I have a source that can get them for $480 US.

MSH skate inDecember? o.O

:( Who gets to go?

Just wanted to say i have never had my skates profiled, and would love to have a 'pro' take a look at the way i skate. But as i said earlier, there is not one here in Vancouver that i totally trust so....I might have to hit up JR or OTG with video and steel, and see what happens. ;P

Well, I figure this is the best thread to ask this. I have a pair on One90 skates. I have been skating on them for about a month and a half now, and they are starting to break in. My problem is with the ankle bulges(best description i could think of). The outside bulges are in the right place for my ankles, but the inside ones, on both feet, seem to be too high/too far back. Is there any product that I can get that will raise my heel in the skate so that my ankles are in the right place or am i just SOL? I really like the skates, the stiffness, the weight, and hell, even the LS2P are starting to grow on me. If this problem cant be solved, I will have to move back to a more traditional bauer style boot and get a pair of Vapor xxxx i guess. I was just hoping for some insight so i dont have to get rid of the one90s, because i like the skate, but they are bruising the inside ankle bones on both my feet.

thanks.

T-Dot....have you talked to the guy at Icesports NorthShore. He does a great job on skates.

Superfeet/Shockdoctor Insoles will lift your feet a bit in the skates (Shockdoctors are a bit thicker than superfeet, thus will lift them a bit more.) This will also take up some of the volume throughout the skate, however.

Do a couple of searches and you'll find plenty of info on both.

A super-cheap alternative, and a way to test whether the insoles might work for you would be to put an old insole under your current insole inside the skates. Aftermarket insoles are pretty inexpensive though, and will do a much better job of supporting your foot

The guys at Ice Level Source for Sports in Richmond also know what they are doing. I got fed up with Cyclone Taylor's sharpenings (constantly burning my blade), and made the switch to Ice Level and they are very knowledgeable about sharpening and profiling and such.

Honestly though, Vancouver is such a hockey hotbed that you can't find ANYONE you trust with your skates? I'm sure there are a ton, there's gotta be atleast 10 decent shops around the area.

what about using just those little heel cups you can get at walmart or whatever? I have thought about trying those, but i wonder if i just put those under my heel if it would make me feel too far forward on the front of my feet? maybe i would be better off just getting some superfeet. only prob is, my lhs only carries the stock bauer insoles

EDIT:by "little heel cups" I mean something like this: http://www.drscholls.com/product.aspx?prodid=31

Getting to richmond for me is a lil outta the way blues91, but i used to work down there and yeah i would say from the cpl times i talked to them they seemed knowledgeable, but never heard anything good from ppl. Not only that do they do top notch profiling like OTG and JR talk about? As for IceSports on the NorthShore CanucksFan, i actually thought they were too rinky-dinky of a shop[ to even get profiling done. Also do they do the top notch profiling we are talkin' bout here?

Well, how would we know when we live no where close to JR and OTG? How will you know if any of the local profilers are good if you don't even give them a chance? Just because they don't post on MSH doesn't mean that no one in the Vancouver area is competent at profiling.

I haven't had my skates profiled yet, but I am thinking about it. I've spent quite a bit of time chatting with the guys at IceSports North Shore and I'm pretty sure they know what they're doing. More than any other shop I've been to in the Vancouver area, they really seem to take sharpening seriously. Every time I have had them sharpen my skates they've never felt better. They can also talk intelligently about different hollows, something I've found other skate shops to be shockingly bad at. (I had one guy tell me that a 5/8 ROH was a "goalie cut". I took my skates away from him!)

Have you had your skates profiled at any of the local shops? I'm thinking of doing it, and I want to find a place that will actually watch me skate before they do it. I can't remember if the guys at North Shore want to watch you skate or not.

Thanks,

Travis

I agree.....I've only get my skates done there now. Their sharpening is the most consistant I've had. I've tried them all, Scoff's, Larry's, Cyclones, Time Out Sports etc. There are only 2 guys that sharpen at IceSports North Shore and they kick ass when it comes to doing skates. Edges always perfect...not uneven! As for profiling I pretty sure Tom only does it and he'll do you good.

Just re-reading this thread. It really has to be one of the best threads ever- on anyone's forum!

It did raise a question for me. Lot's of talk about getting the profile more on the toes for agility and quickness. While I can understand that being the case for quick starts, how does it help with power turns, crossovers, etc? I was always taught to keep my weight on the back halves of the blades for sharp turns and crossovers. I'm not that fast and not that agile so maybe I need more forward pitch. Any help understanding how this works would be awesome. This thread will be hockeymom's legacy!!
