definitely check all cords, and also make sure the power supply is well ventolated. The red rings of death do light up with just 3 of the 4 lights though...

But the warranty has been extended to 3 years from the purchase date.

This may be a confusing question, but I do need some help.So I have been setting up my xbox 360 to play online and whenever i try and connect to online it says that my ip address connection fails. I use an ethernet cord and connect that to my modem. I have tried to connect to xbox live with an automatic and a manual ip address but they both dont work. I think that I might need to key in my PPPoE settings/PPPoE username and password so does anyone have any idea where I can find those settings on my computer, or does anyone else think there is a different problem?

My friend was having the same problem with his x-box, we ended up on the the phone with some guy form x-box for 45 minutes and didn't get any further.

In some cases, the Red Ring of death can be on again, off again, but 90% of the time, it's hardware failure. Microsoft just extended the warranty to 3 years in regards to red ring.. but you'll have to part with your 360 for about 4 weeks. And this is after a nice 45 minute wait to get through to customer support. They don't replace, they just repair.

Give you ISP a call and have them trouble shoot it with you. Sometimes they have to reset you internet in order to connect with Xbox Live service. Don't buy a router until you have given your ISP a call, no need to spend $$$ on something you already have <_< . If this doesn't work then you might have to shell out some $$$ for a new router. If the upper left hand LED Light is off and the other 3 LED lights are Red then you have system failer (4 Red LED lights are connection failure). Turning it on and off is only adding to your heart ache. So your most likey screwed - be sure that you have try and retry all cable connects, if the 3 Red Lights are still on proceed to call Xbox customer service. Once you do get throught to them, they will ask you to do the trouble steps once again - cut them off (tell them you've done all the trouble shooting procedures) and ask them to send in your 360 return box (going to be a couple of days/weeks before you get the return box). When you send your heart ache to them be sure to purchase a Delivery Comfirmation Form (this will let you know that they've recieved your 360), should be about 4 weeks from then on. Best bet would be eBay, you can get an actual 360 harddrive for less then the memory card shop prices.

i would definitely go for a hard drive over a mermory card. a 512mb card costs about half of what a 20gb hard drive does. i second ebay. also the av cables are 360 specific. they come with component cables and hd component (all on 1 cable with different connenctios so it will work for standard or hd tv's)

edit: no original controller will not work.

Please, don't waste your money on an Xbox 360. Unless you also intend to purchase a PS3 or a handful of 360's, you will end up regretting the hell out of it in a year or two. I'm not saying it doesn't have a great game line up or wonderful online capability, the hardware is just too flawed at this point. If you've gotta have one, try to wait until next yr when a much improved revision will be released, supposedly cutting failure rates to 5-10%.

not to sound like an a$$hole but that is completely dumb. i respect your opinion but X-BOX 360 has been out for years now...all the bugs are fixed. I have had a 360 for 2 years now and have had no problems. The red ring of death is a hardware failure and all of the new systems made after July 2007 has had the new hardware so they can not get the red ring of death... trust me im a video game geek lol :P

Please, stop lying, teenage fanboy. You just blew any credibility you had here with that crap. Let me give you the numbers. Approximately 25% of Falcons are failing, in a year since that revision came out. MS even stated Falcon wasn't designed to address the RROD. If you don't believe me, google it. I've heard so many people complaining in person (worked at Blockbuster) about 360's scratching up all their disks, randomly dying, and many other unnecessary problems. If you want the headaches, go ahead, but don't complain to me or anyone else when it rips you up. Weigh the pros and cons objectively. Make your own decision. Don't listen to teenagers and fanboys.

360: Pros: Better game selection, more online features, easier to buy/trade games. Cons: Serious reliability issues and headaches.

As for PS3's, I own one but don't play it much currently. Hockey and law take up most of my time. It's cheaper to upgrade the HDD,you can run Yellow Dog Linux, you get free PSN (online), built in blu ray, low failure rate. Cons: Lack of network features, mediocre choice of games, costs more, is hard to find used/pre owned games. The guy is a prospective buyer, tell him both sides of the story, don't kiss Microsoft's rear-end.

Hey, I agree. If you are down solely for straight gaming right now, the 360 is a bit better. But then again, the PS3 is going to have a lot of good titles coming out by next yr and they've improved the PSN a good bit. The PS3 has the future and the 360 has the now, despite it's hardware issues. What will be good to see is next yr, when they hopefully have a sound hardware xbox vs a ps3 with a better array of games.

Question? .... are you buying this used off a friend, or new from a store? If it's used, I'd frown upon it... there's enough issues with 360's, and buying used could make your life miserable. If it's new from a retailer (I've posted this numerous times, but I'm re-posting because I think it's pretty good advice) - buy a protection plan!!!! I spent $90 on a protection plan from Best Buy, and I've always been able to swap out for a new console (I've been through 4).... I've had an Elite for a while now, and no issues **knock on wood**

I agree with everybody,if thats allowed ;) yes the 360 still has it's problems but they are happening a lot less frequent and turn around times are better. While I enjoy playing my friends ps3. He is the I only one who has one, every one else I know has a 360. But I did make sure I bought it at sams club where they have a 100 percent guarentee. I'm on my 4th 360 now, and still prefer it. But I hope the next model does improve a lot of flaws, and has a disk slot not a tray.

Anyways I'll be on my 360 about 5pm east coast time if anyone wants to play some halo3 or NHL 08 hit me up, same name as on here.

Core, premium, elite, all have gone down. Most people I know are on #2 or 3, never heard of any more than that until you guys said you're on your fourth.

I even own a controller and 3 games, just not the system. The recent price drop is mighty tempting, especially if I can find one with a 2008 production date.

I've had my 360 for about 2 years now and in that time I've lost the service of it for about 4 weeks when it went in for repair. Sure it's a pain in the ass, but not a big deal really. I think having the best system NOW is better than buying one that you HOPE will be better in a year. 360 online and game library is way ahead of Sony's and it's not likely they'll close that gap anytime soon if ever. Game developers are constantly porting former Sony exclusive games over to the 360 because they run a business and they realize they're developing for a much smaller market if they stick to PS3 only. So it's a given 360 is the NOW system but there is no guarantee that PS3 is the future.

I just don't want the hassle. I'm going to be doing a lot of moving around for the next year, not staying in one place more than 4 months at a time. College for 2 more weeks, Philly for 3.5 months, Detroit and Lansing for a month, back to school for 4 months, wherever the summer job takes me, school again for 4 months, then the working world.

2 of my current housemates have systems. I have a corded controller for playing on their consoles as well as my PC, and the games I bought were titles neither one owned and I wanted enough to buy myself.
