pretty crazy for a really young girl

Recommended Posts

For her age she's pretty good...since we're on the topic of young players with skill, check that out. Also you can see she keeps her head up while stickhandling, maybe glances a couple times but that is very important...I see many older players look down, including myself.

she seems really good, i wonder how old she is

7 or 8???? That's a good base of skills to work from as she gets older...that's for sure.

Looking good...my only recommendation to her Coach/Parents would be to get her to keep her head up a bit more...but for 7 or 8, that's pretty impressive.

That's another line on my wall that represents a kid below the age of 10 that's a helluva lot better hockey player than I am. LOL!

Wouldn't doing things like that on roller blades be even more beneficial? For me, dryland stick handling isn't the issue, it's when I'm on the ice that all of my fundamentals are gone.

I have a wicked shot when I'm in shoes on concrete, but I can barely lift my wristers to the middle of the net on ice.

For the record, I've only been skating for a few months, but I've been doing little drills like that in my basement/garage for fun for a few years.

My 2 main problems are moving with the puck on my stick/protection and keeping my head up.

Are you using the same length stick when in shoes (on concrete) and when on skates (ice)? When you're on skates, your posture has to change to get the blade of the stick on the ice (assuming the same legth stick), so things can be very different. If you're comfortable with the stick length on dry land, try using a longer stick on ice. Just a thought.

No, not the same length. I'm at college in the UP of Michigan at MTU, and hockey is really big and I started this year.

Back home I had a stick that I just fooled around with and it helped develop some basic skills.

When I'm on the ice I feel comfortable with my sticks. They're 67.5" when stood up against the wall, and come just above the tip of my nose off skates. I try to not fool around with them in my apartment wile I'm bored so that I don't have the problem of length adjustments.

The team I'm on is only IM college, so there's not much time for practice, even drop-in times are mainly just scrimmage, so the little warmup is just about the only time I get the puck on my stick.

I'll have myself a puck and I can move it around, pass, stickhandle in place just fine. As soon as I go to take a shot, it feels like I can't get any power to the blade and the puck will just scoot along the ice or maybe go ankle high. If I'm going in on net, concentrating on the goalie I loose the puck or my footing and I just can't move with it very well, but I'll be moving forward with some momentum and not thinking about taking the shot, just waiting for the goalie to move and I'll rocket a wrister to the crossbar.

I have a skating class that's helped me a ton with technique, and I've gone from falling on my butt every 3 steps to actually being able to contribute and skate confidently in about 2 months, skating twice a week in class, one drop-in a week, and so far 2 IM games.

I'm a freak, I know it. While I'm back home over the holiday break I'm going to do drills on inline skates to work on moving with the puck/ball) and working on balance.

I'm open to suggestions as well :)

Hello all =] this is 'Miss D' as my mum has influenced you all to call me... (not that I don’t like it ^_^)

Hmm, Okay, I left this as my mum's choice to edit... but… I saw this thread and I was amazed by the girl's skills. Everyone should be, and if you're going to be snotty about it, I would like to see the film of yourself at that age; Even without youtube you should still have those old tapes, right? ;)

Now then. There shall not be another idiotic post about her not being less than amazing. Unless you have proof of being just as good. If you feel like criticizing her, then, well, you’re just a jealous of a 7/8-year-old GIRL. HAHAHHAHA.

(Quote the messed-up evil laughter)

Make your criticism useful so people can learn… Like I noticed the girl has her top hand up too high (as if the stick was too long) and that her hand was also glued to her side. If she brought her hand down to her hip, infront of herself, and away from her body, It would make her that much better of a stick handler. Your top hand controls the stick, the bottom hand smoothes and guides the stick. You don’t want to limit the mobility of your control. Watch the professionals, they all play like that.

May I brutally hurt whomever made the comment about "too bad she isn't a boy"? WHY should it matter? Women (in my opinion) play a better game overall then men. And who knows, by the time this girl is an adult, the NWHL may be as/more popular than the NHL. Just you wait. Except all of you in the States, nobody watches hockey there.

If you’re serious about hockey and learning, then you should actively be doing dry land.

It's like {insert NHL player name here}. I remember he said he went out to his garage every night with his dad for two hours practicing his shooting. If it didn't have an impact on his play, why would he have done it?

If dry land isn’t helping you, you're not doing it right. Duh. Go read a book. You need to learn how this biomechanics thingie-mic-bobber works.

Now apparently I've made too long of a post... so ttfn, ta-ta for now.

This isn't the last you'll hear of me!

:D

-miss D-iane.

You're joking, right?

I'm not taking anything away from the women's game. I think it's great for the girls and, moreover, great for the sport. There's certainly no denying the fact that female hockey players are a rapidly growing demographic - and there has to be a reason for that, right? Hockey is, without a doubt, the greatest sport in the world - and the fact that women are becoming increasingly able to share this sport with us is terrific.

However, I think the claim that a WNHL (or anything like it) would be more (or even nearly as) entertaining, popular and successful than the existing male league is a little "out there."

I'm a half-way decent (okay, I concede: "semi-competent") hockey player. I grew-up playing AAA (Tier I) and, before I got hurt, was of Jr. A calibre (and am fighting to get back). In recent years, I have been afforded the opportunity to skate with some terrific hockey players - NHLers, men's & women's NCAA Divsion I hockey players, female Olympians, OHLers, etc. etc.

Now, these elite-level women that I skated with were, indeed, remarkable hockey players. They could skate and handle/pass/shoot the puck very, very well. However, I have never felt completely "out-classed" by these women the way I have by their male counterparts. When I do have the opportunity to play with any of these ladies, I definitely feel as though I am able to compete with/against them in a way that allows them the opportunity to "open it up" a little bit. Perhaps, if you were to ask them, they would disagree... I can tell you that I have a Hell of a lot of fun.

But that's the problem. Not many people are going to want to pay to watch hockey played at a level they could see for next-to-nothing if they were to go see a decent local Midget AAA or Junior A team. Add the physical aspect of the men's game, and there is simply too much for the women's game to overcome.

Would a women's professional league be fun to watch? Maybe. I wouldn't know...to be brutally honest, I can't even watch the women's Olympic games. Maybe it's the complete lack of name-recognition, maybe it's the non-existance hitting (not necessarily contact, though), or maybe something else that someone other than myself might be able to put his/her finger on. I don't know what it is. I tried watching. I really did. I couldn't do it.

THAT SAID: The girl in the video looks like she might be able to dangle me senseless in another year or so. Her shot looks like it's already harder than mine... :(

Actually the NHL owners should be happy she's a girl because now they'll only have to pay her 70% of what they'd pay for a guy with that talent.

That dosnt really impress me. Think what u will but i could have done all that when i was 7. I remember i use to score 7 goals a game. just skate around everyone and deke and all that jazz. The problem is, as i got older my goals per games went down. Yeah, i was always on AAA teams and all that, but now iam just some Jr. player.

What iam saying is, i know a lot of people who could do stuff like that when they were 7. Unless she does that every single day and keeps progressing, people are going to catch up to you. it doesnt matter what u can do when ur 7. it matters what u can do when ur 17. I'd be in the nhl if they scouted people when they were 7.

She needs more work on her slapshot. Instead of hitting behind the puck she is just slapping at the puck.

of all the squirt games i see, barely any one at that age takes a slapshot. they just dont seem to have the strength to get the puck off the ground or shot hard at that yound of an age. regardless, she has a nice shot

In USA hockey, squirts can't take slapshots.
