Best performance t-shirts under gear

Recommended Posts

I have two UnderArmour loosefit HeatGear t-shirts, as well as a longsleeve Russell performance shirt, but I'm just curious about what others use. How are these shirts that are made just for hockey by RbK, Nike, Itech, etc.?

Yeah it has. Did a search and got some good info. I'll keep my eye out for Puckskin. And I thought I was the only one who thought UA was overjocked.

Mods, feel free to Steve Nichol this thread.

Under Armour works for me. The only problem is they smell horribly after about two or three games and need to be washed more often than a regular cotton white T-shirt. It makes me wonder if its really worth the expense to buy these types of products.

...why not just wash it? Is it that big of a deal? I wash my under armour after every ice slot...

I just wear shorts and socks under my gear ..

Is this bad for the gear? I can understand why wearing no socks is bad for skates but for shoulder and shin pads?

Washing it ruins the material's moisture-wicking properties. The more you wash it, the quicker the shirt wears out and you'll have to buy a new one.

Exactly - the UA wicking materials are sprayed on.

And how are you supposed to clean it? Handwashing?

No, there's really nothing you can do anything about it.

THere's Sportwash which is a detergent for it but at the cost of that you're just better off buying a shirt every 15 uses.

Puckskin works, but it smells horribly. So I can't use it for everyday use, which is a minus in my book.

From a marketing perspecitve, I've always felt PuckSkin was priced too high for being an unknown brand trying to penetrate an established market. However, from a technical perspective, it doesn't make sense that you've had problems with odors, nor have I ever had problems with odors from mine.

We shared the booth with PuckSkin at the last show, so I heard the explanation a number of times: PS has microfibers (to wick away perspiration) and silver nanos (to prevent bacteria from growing) sewn into the material. That is one reason it's okay to wash the jerseys -- it's embedded in the materials, not sprayed on. Last, they added a patch this past year that literally sucks up odors. I saw them pour alcohol (I think) into a closed jar with this patch, then have people smell the jar.

What do you mean, smells? The PS is probably the best out there for keeping odors at bay, even when not washed.

i would debate the whole wash thing, as my underarmour has over a hundered washes (every time i use em) and it still seems to do the trick, i don't feel wet and soggy midway through the ice session..

Same here. I cycle through 3 pairs. I have had one for over a year now and don't have any issues washing them. I do NOT put them in the drier though.

True, people want UA because it's UA, well known. You really have to sell PS to customers. It doesn't fly off the rack. However, once someone tries it, they love it and usually buy a second one. It's definately high end and can't compete pricewise with the $24.95 UA's.

I've had good luck with the Russell Athletic Dri Power T's. They have replaced the cotten T shirts I used to wear, and sell for about 9 bucks a piece.
