TBLfan 25 Report post Posted December 25, 2006 definitely smelling salt. If you've ever been on a nhl bench after a game you'd see tons of used packets on the floor of the bench.
Alias81 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2006 I thought smelling salts were for people who have just been knocked out, what else are they for?
TBLfan 25 Report post Posted December 25, 2006 if you've ever smelt one it kinda "wakes you up". It's not just for when you get knocked out, but when you take a shot and you need to clear your head or any other time when you need to kinda "wake up," if that makes sense. Maybe I should invest in a few boxes of smelling salt for the lightning pk unit. :o awwww haha
LkptTiger 1 Report post Posted December 25, 2006 Definitely smelling salts. They're an eye-opener, for sure. If the Sudefed washed-down with Red Bull I take before every game don't get my brain awake, the untold number of sniffs I take of salts before and during the game do the trick...you just have to be careful not to singe your nose hairs.Just wondering why they're called smelling SALTS, though? Anyone have a clue. I don't think NaCl has an odor to it, and, if it does, I doubt it smells anything like ammonia.
ThePeteStanis 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2006 I think it does smell like ammonia. A really condensed glass cleaner is what it reminds me of.
LkptTiger 1 Report post Posted December 25, 2006 That's what I'm saying - I've smelled sea-salt, and it doesn't smell anything like a smelling salt (ammonia).

I don't think NaCl has an odor to it, and, if it does, I doubt it smells anything like ammonia.this is why they're called salts:"A salt, in chemistry, is any ionic compound composed of cations (positively charged ions) and anions (negative ions) so that the product is neutral (without a net charge)"there's more salts than just table and sea salts. TBLfan 25 Report post Posted December 25, 2006 After a quick search on wikipedia it says that "smelling salt" is ammonium carbonate. It also says: "Smelling salts are used to arouse consciousness because the release of ammonia [NH3] gas that accompanies their use irritates the mucous membranes of the nose and lungs, and thereby triggers an inhalation reflex (that is, it causes the muscles that control breathing to work faster). One such smelling salt is ammonium carbonate (NH4)2CO3."

hockechamp14 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2006 I know most powerlifters smell ammonia caps before competition lifts and before maxing out during training. I haven't seen it in a pouch like that though.

LkptTiger 1 Report post Posted December 27, 2006 Where can you buy some at? I've never smelled it beforeThey were supplied to us (my 'mates and I) by the team/organization, and I couldn't tell you where they came from. I'm sure you'll come-up with something if you search Google. I can, however, tell you that if you're just looking to sniff one for the novelty of sniffing one, you're probably not going to enjoy it.I seem to recall when Kozzie played with the Wings he used Breath right strips?I used to wear them, too...that definitely isn't one. Come to think of it, I can't think of any NHLers that are using them now-a-days. Maybe the advent of the "clear" strips has made it more difficult to spot, but I remember there being dozens of guys using them back in the day...I believe Bondra was something of a posterboy for them.
