Pro skate lifespan

Paul Coffey was another one- I recently read somewhere (New England Hockey Journal?) that he went through 200 pairs in one season. Please note that this total includes ones he just didn't like the fit or looks of, not pairs he actually wore.

How do these guys even have time to break them in? Are they just not built to last that long? I bought new skates like a month ago and have used them for 10 games and they still aren't at that perfect break in yet.

He's also one guy who would have his skates sharpened between shifts.

That's just unbelievable that these guys use a pair of skates for only a few games and then just dump them. Talk about over excessiveness and waste. How much stiffness do you really need in a skate to perform reasonably on the ice if your a professional player? Life is just a bit too good for these guys. Their like spoiled rich kids aren't they? Yes the North American athelete has it pretty good nowadays. Sorry guys to me it just seems ridiculous!

I was talking to an AHL player this summer who rotated three pairs of the composite Easton skates for about 4 months, then would replace them with new pairs. He was about 6'2", 200lbs. Not a smooth skater, just hard choppy strides with lots of strength. He didn't glide much either, skated hard to where he needed to go, stop, turn, skate hard back.

As for the North American athlete being spoiled... let's not forget the entire sport of professional soccer.

Actually, the team is paying for it, and if they feel that they are getting full potential out of their players (both performance and monetary) then it is not a waste in their eyes.

Remember, there are NBA players (Jordan was one) who use a new pair of shoes every game. I say that's more ridiculous than skates every 2 wks.

True but shoes are cheaper to make and buy and usually do wear out faster. I took an athletic training class in college and they said something along the lines of shoes are ment to do around 150 - 300 miles before they should be replaced. Which is not a lot if you think about how much walking a normal person does through out the day let alone athletes having to do running drills.

High end basketball shoes are in the 200-300cdn range. If that is the case then it'll be 2800-4200cdn every 2 weeks as opposed to 2400 (ie. 800cdn dollar one90 skates) for skates every 3 weeks.

I still can't justify replacing basketball shoes after 1 game. It takes me atleast 1 or 2 days to break in a pair.

I agree, using a new pair of high end bball shoes seems a bit more more crazy than a new pair of skates every 10 days, but keep in mind that basketball players could replace their shoes every game because of having to many scuffs/ not looking brand new anymore, you gotta stay fly yah know
