Call it quits?

Recommended Posts

I had tryouts for juniors and I couldn't even finish. I injured my right knee a couple months ago and I may have re-injured it again today, I couldnt finish and had to limp myself off the ice. This is my last eligible year of juniors and I do want to play this year. Should I call it quits for competitive hockey and just get my knee healed back to 100% or see if I can join the team at a later time.

Do what you think you gotta do. However, remember you're going to be around for a long time after competitive hockey and you'd probably like to walk as relatively pain-free as possible. There's enough crap to deal with the older you get, you don't need to add to it anymore than necessary.

I'm 38 now, each year I'm starting to get more and more stiffness in my right knee during winter time when temps drop. I'm thinking all the footballs I kicked when I was younger may have something to do with it. From age 16-32ish, I was pretty hardcore doing that and all the force put on my leg with all the kicks I took practicing and playing (mostly practicing) may be catching up to me now.

You should talk to a doctor and do what he/she tells you to do. IMHO, as you stated it was your last year of juniors, you're competive playing days are over. So it's a simple question really, would you rather play part of a last junior season and risk long term injury (maybe never able to play again) or let your body heal and be able to play for years to come?

Hockey is forever, Knees are not. Get it treated, get it fixed, heal, then come back as best you can. See if you can get some Physio exercises for it so you can still keep your leg strength whilst it's healing. Also goto the Gym and work on arms, back etc.

That way once you decide to go back everything will be as strong as possible.

PS: Finding a sympathetic hockey chick, always works wonders. Mine in particular bakes, sews and even massages. She is a one in a million find.... ;-)

Seriously consider the long term. My buddy from college was expected to make it big time in the pros...but 2-3 knee injuries later he could barely hold a roster position on an ECHL team.

He finally gave it up...but he still has the pain. He can barely even swing a golf club now without pain because of the twisting motion on his knee.

Do you want to be able to get down on your hands and knees one day without pain to play with your grandkids?

Besides, you already played juniors...so you will have the memories. It doesn't sound like you were a lock to go play pro or your question would be phrased differently. So, LONG TERM, how will the memories of your time in juniors improve with one more season that you limp through because of the knee?

Just a thought...

Heel properly...and play locally the rest of your life. The game can be enjoyed at the "beer league" level too! ;-)

If you have a shot at pro hockey when healthy id take a break heal up some and see if there is a surgical fix.

just take awhile off until your knee gets better and then start to play when your doctor says your knee is 100% healthy

You may never get a chance to play competitive hockey after this year. So go ahead and play if you still can. (I don't know how good you are, so it may not be your last chance.)

Heal up, come back stronger.

I threw my arm out playing baseball in high school and just threw in the towel, I regret doing that everyday. I had the mind set that if i can't be good, I don't want to play at all, and it bit me in the rear. Don't end up like that.
