Broken OPS you found in the trash

Recommended Posts

Anyone find these things in the trash at the rink? So far I've found two, a 100 flex Synergy (Sakic) that I put a 5K blade in and have been using as my primary stick for most of the season and an almost new Bauer tapered OPS (forget the model) that I loaned to one of the boys on the team I coach and never saw it again.

*EDIT* Probably shoulda put this in the general board. Sorry mods.

I don't find much usable stuff, at least for myself. Most the broken ones I pick up are perfect for my little neighbors though.

I have the most awesome mini stick made out of a 98 E-Flex and cut/shaved down Jagr Revolution blade. A pity my 3 yo god son is a bloody lefty! <_<

Anybody in the Western New York/Southern Ontario areas (and a few other regions where I've played a lot) has likely found a few of my busted (or slightly smushy) sticks in the garbage somewhere. When I break a stick or the blade goes soft, it goes out...no OPS-cum-tapered shafts here. As I move-on from competitve AAA hockey to the beer league ranks, I think I'm going to have to become slightly less picky with my sticks.

I've found a gold Synergy Grip, Fury Diamondback, TPS Adrenaline, and a regular silver Synergy before. Not sure if there's anything else.

I once found a half-eaten tuna fish sandwich in the trash. It was very good. You would be amazed at the good stuff people throw out.

if the OPS breaks cant you just fix it for less than that of the cost of buying a brand new one, plus i think there is something that when you fix it the part that is broken can be made stronger than it originally was

Full length 100 flex 2005 ST Grip, 112 flex XV, and an 87 Nike Apollo. Have only coverted the ST so far.

But you'd be surprised how many people don't know that.

i dont know if its the area that i play in has all the spoiled kids, or if they are too lazy to convert sticks, but ive found probally 10 useable sticks that can be made into shfts just sitting in the garbage cans, i usually ask others in the room if they want it because i have too many sticks already, but if not ill pick them up and either cut it down and wait for someone to need a stick, or when i lived back home id use them out in the driveway.

I really haven't found much good stuff lately, especially since I started playing with this guy who's constantly scavenging and importing broken-bladed shafts back to Europe (where Eastons are particularly hot) to sell to people.

I didn't think that sort of thing was profitable at all, but then again a lot of what this guy does doesn't really make any sense.

Best find was a CCM Vector 130T. It had about 2 rolls worth of tape wrapped on the knob, which make it three times as thick, 1 foot down the shaft. I had to resort to a saw to get through it. Took half an hour to get off. All of my teammates thought it was crap, since it had black tape/a puck rubbed on it, thus making it look dirty, but being a gear whore, I took it anyway, and to my surprise, it was very nice. Just stuck a Dolo2 blade in it after having it sit around as a tapered shaft for a while. We'll see now it performs!

I ref, so I find a lot of broken OPS in the trash, usually pro-stock older model TPS that can't be refunded / replaced.

A lot of people / families are rich enough to afford retail OPS, so that's why I think these usable OPSes are in the trash. Then there are the rest of us (beer leaguers, etc.). LHSes could profit from this by selling repaired (Stick-Fix or SRS) OPSes to the price-conscious. Selling repaired OPSes to Europe? I guess that as long as the prices in Europe are so high for OPSes it's still profitable. Perhaps selling to Australia could work too.

Thought of that... but I've seen a lot of kids using Stealths and Synergies... Dotn think they are that worried since dear ol' mom and dad are still paying.

I remember finding a Z-bubble shaft with a broken blade in the garbage years back. This was before OPS and I felt like I won the lottery.

yeah, you can fix them by putting a "plug" between the 2 broken pieces, therefore losing all your flex... stupid idea.

I saw a a broken dolomite sticking out of a can about 3 weeks ago and a friend was looking for a tapered blade so I went over to pick it up to try and pull the blade for him. When I got there it turned out to be a busted dolo2 shaft with an almost new dolo2 blade in it.

Seems most guys around here hold on to their broken sticks and convert them themselves, because I don't find 'em too often.
