Draft Combine Question

Recommended Posts

What is the standard that players bench press? I believe in the NFL the standard is 225. I would assume less for the NHL, but I was curious after I read this:

Halifax Mooseheads forward Jakub Voracek struggled a bit on the bench press (150 pounds) but seemed to perform up to par the remainder of the morning.

Calgary Hitmen defenceman Alex Plante, a big guy at 6-3, and 225 pounds, did 11 reps on the bench press. Eleven is the standard that no one has broken yet.

Omsk forward Alex Cherepanov looked like a kid coming out for his Midget tryout with his hat on and laid-back approach , and it really showed in the 150-pound bench press as he put up a generous 3 reps.

It has to be more than 150 lbs doesn't it? That isn't very much at all really and I am very surprised they would say 3 reps of that is generous.

instead of the benchpress what would their squats and deadlifts and leg press thats where the hockey players stand out/

Whats the website where you get all of that info?

Does anyone know how our friend Mr. Perron did?

98 lb. One rep. :P

They could've meant that it was generous in the fact that he really didn't do clean reps.

All the excersises are done to a certain timing which leads to lower amounts of weight being lifted. I beleive on the bench press you have to hold it for 2s at the top of your push and 2s at the bottom, same goes for pushups.

Regardless, I know kids who have never lifted before that can put up 150 15 times with the pause without any issues.

I can curl 150lbs more than 3 times and I don't lift weights regularly.

...that doesn't sound right, I can't imagine the standards are that low for potential pro athletes.

Just goes to show that younger guys should be working on their skills more than their bench press.

Damn, these guys are not football players.

Benching 150 10 times doesn't equate to a football player. No wonder this is a terrible draft class, can Kane even pickup the bar?

well bench pressing isn't something you really have to train for(for something low like 150lbs). I don't lift weights regularly but I can put 150lbs up somewhat easily.

Isn't strength considered good? Isn't that something that people look for in players? Strength shown in a bench press could show potential strength clearing the front of the net or battling along the boards.

Damn, who are you to say this is a terrible draft class, shut the hell when you don't what you are talking about? Does your Datsyuk was able to lift 150 lbs when he got drafted? I don't think so, so let Kane relax...It's so easy to bitch behind a computer.

There were many guys like Datsyuk and Bergeron and ect that were not suppose to become stars when they got drafted, but they've become stars and there will be at least 5 players frothis draft that will become stars.

buddy you spit out some useless stuff here. You can easily train for bench press by doing guess what? bench press. Every hockey player has a chest day in their programs, but think of it like this. Since the majority of the guys there play major junior, theur seasons just ended so you have to assume they are weaker then before it started. i bet the college guys put up better numbers because their season is shorter. the bench press doesnt show guys clearing out the net, but more athleticism. At 18 some kids can't do 150 many times. you dont need a chest for hockey

How often did Wayne Gretzky do either of those things? The guys that are the most ripped are the fringe players and fighters hoping to keep a job in the NHL, not the guys who produce the most points.

These guys are 18 (or so) and will naturally put on some bulk over time, it's natural. There is no reason for them to be doing 20 reps of 250lbs, or anything like that. Too much upper body bulk can be a bad thing.

Those who value strength over skill are the ones who end-up with pylons like Darien Hatcher and Sheldon Souray (I don't give a fuck how many PP points he can put-up, his defense is for shit) on their squads.

It also took Datsyuk 4 years and 20lbs of muscle to even get 4th line minutes in the NHL. He was 160 when he got drafted, Zetterberg was 165. They both gained muscle before they even sniffed the NHL.

Do you think your brother is gonna jump into an NHL lineup right now? I can understand guys "filling" out but when you're a clear cut #1 overall pick you need to get into shape. 3 reps of 150 is a joke. Same with leg strength, look at Koltsov circa 1999. Guy is probably one of the fastest guys to ever play in the NHL but has bird arms and his slap shot was as hard as most guys can pass the puck.

Bet ya this guy could put up 150 more then three times:

Does anyone know how our friend Mr. Perron did?

mmm I did great in my interviews I thought. I had 26 interviews with the teams, it's quite a lot compared to most who had around 15 ints.

I didn't do a lot of testing because of a shoulder injuries.

mmm and to answer datsyuksomething, u are right that 10 reps isn't a lot, but u would probably understand why some players dont do alot and its because there is a rythm we need to follow, the is a beep beep that is pretty quick you would be surprise. You look like a frustrated person behind your computer. There is nothing to be frustrated about in life, life is great, have fun, start to enjoy it. It goes by quickly.

but liek chadd said, players of my age should work on skills more than strenth.

I actually agree with your points about leg strength and Konstantine Koltsov. The guy could flat out fly but he couldn't really do anything else. I always hoped he would grow bigger but he never did..

I'm not really expecting you to answer...but what the hell, I'll ask anyway. Was there a team (or teams) that seemed more interested than others? Did you get any indication of where you could be headed.

Trevor Timmins was sitting behind me at a Bulldogs game last week. I thought about having a conversation with my buddy (loudly) about the skill show you were putting on at Mem. Cup. But...I figure at this point, you don't need my help *L*

Are you back home? Or are you running up a Hotel wireless bill on the Leagues dime *L*
