I know how you feel mack. I was playing with the Avalanche against Montreal (with the updated rosters) on all star and was up 2-0 until they scored 2 shorthanded goals that were lucky as shit. Luckily i scored with 7 seconds left in the third period to win 3-2.

nothing beats mine up 1 nothing and got scored on twice from the other end in a matter of 2 minutes to lose the game with 16 seconds left. Somethings about this game really bug me like the lagging from time to time as well as you just not being able to hit certain people it gets really annoying.

Damn, you must suck.

;)

I don't know if it's mine or if anyone else noticed it, but Superstar is easier than All-Star. When I moved up to All-Star I clawed my way to two tough wins but then it got easier and easier. All-Star has been more of a realistic/challenging level on mine.

I noticed that too. I was playing dynasty and was pulling wins out by shutting down defense and heavily cycling the puck, losing and OT were common. Halfway through the season I'm on a 16-game streak blowing teams out 6-1. It's not that I'm a ton better at the game, either. I'm committing the D to a check, failing, stopping the resultant 2 or 3 on 1 and sniping wristers from the point with no traffic.

I'm still working on a way to get my team in the slot like Holmstrom actually does, but it's so difficult unless you've got a second person using vision control.

Granted I'm the Leafs, but it's not happening at all for me. At best Tucker will go there but no deflections come of it. Any goals I've had off deflections are of the accidental variety. I also can't play the body at all and rely on a lot of the bumper buttons to block shots/passes.

For the life of me I can't figure out how to lay down to block a shot. I can crouch and lay the stick down to get passes, but the player is still only slightly wider. My PK suffers from only letting the computer lay down, and they do it rarely.

I still can't figure out why they built in slashing but no hook, and why my players seemingly always throw an elbow when defense is on conservative and I'm on the PK. Too many 5on3 chances from stupid penalties.

usually when you lay down RB + LB (360) it will block the shot depending on the situation. In mid-windup I think they will block the shot, opposed to diving.

They don't have a formal controls menu that I've found, so I've just been going off the little tutorial during the loading screens and what I've learned in practice.

RB + LB pressed at the same time will make the guy dive. If he is diving in front of someone shooting he will attempt to block the shot. If he is diving and no one is shooting he will lay there to block the pass.

Controller settings in under Main Menu > My NHL 08 > Settings > Controller Settings

You can hook - it is the "A" button on 360.

I've had the game since November, but have had issues with the game freezing, disc error, and the resulting DNFs online. I recently checked the problem in a google search. I found advice posted in another forum.

The following is directions to clean out the cache in the hard drive that results from XBL updates. I figured I'd pass it along -- as I'm well aware from first-hand experience that the quitting and freezing of the system/game is quite irritating.

I hunted around the net, and it's actually some new patch microsoft had put in that did some sort of caching of files. Basically, to correct the problem (temporarily) you need to clear this cache out. This unfortunately means you have to redownload updates, but beats crashing all the time.

SO if it's starts happening to you again, go to the dashboard.

Select the system tab.

Select memory.

Press Y ( i believe) to do options on your hard drive.

From there, i think you go "X X Y X LB RB X X" and it clears the cache. This will work for any games where you get the DNF. You will know that button combination worked when you get a warning saying something about "this will perform system maintenance on the drive, are you sure?". It won't delete your drive or something shadey, I promise you that. Like I said, it just clears that temporary cache out though which is 99.9% the cause of that DNF error.

me too, I've had it since it came out. I can't stand the fact that I always get dirty disc error or unreadable disc error. then I feel like mine takes longer to get off the main menu every time.

Has anyone else tried this? PBRyan, it's not that I don't trust you, but I'd rather not take a chance deleting my hard drive. I'm on like my 3rd season of Dynasty and would like to keep it that way.

haha, fair enough Whiskey. I'm not in the same situation dynasty-wise as I mostly play against others. Unfortunately, haven't had the time to actually play since finding this advice, so erring on the side of caution is not a bad idea -- especially considering your dynasty. I'll update this once I get the time to play some games/check out my old dynasty and roster saves.

Since the error was driving me mad, I figured I would post if any others share my pain.

I haven't heard anything about 09 yet, but I pray they reduce the amount of hip checks in the game. For a type of hit you usually don't even see once a game anymore at the NHL level, they occur much too often. Granted, once you play the game enough they really don't become much of an issue, but I think having hip checks as the default is ridiculous. I'd like to see more "bumps" off the puck and less big open ice hits (especially low ones). Watching Jiri Hudler throw a hip on Jerome Iginla is asinine.

Also, I'd like them to figure out a good way to implement deflections into the game. It seems like they've tried to add them to game play for the past 10 years -- so this may be wishful thinking -- but it'd be nice to have a legitimate incentive to get some traffic in front of the goalie.

yeah even if you'd have to hold in a button while your at the point to make an AI player to drive to the net for a deflection would be nice. The set plays were a great addition to the game I thought, if you have the time to mess around with them.

I'm going to agree about the hip checks. It's not so much the frequency of them as it is how they generally seem to injure a player more than anything. It always happens if I have Gionta coming down RW and I fake a shot to go around them. Then he's on the shelf for three weeks, the goddamn Smurf.

The deflections are annoying as well. I like that they're realistic in the sense that the D can deflect them into the corners and whatnot but I think I've scored five goals where my guys meant to tip it. I've scored more goals off of skates than I have tips.

Lastly, less shots off the post. No one hits the post that often.

the best post shots are the 7 posts you hit in a game where you pepper the goalie with 56 shots and yet still lose 3-2, with the other team taking 15 shots and your goalie shitting the bed.

Sounds like a few of the Canadiens/Flyers playoff games....but yes, I do think they do make you hit the posts or put it into the crowd too frequently. I've also been able to score a few goals where I'm clearly offside in the game because the friend I'm playing against passes it back into his zone and I pick it off..that's an interesting glitch and certainly frustrating to the victims. Having players freeze up after missing a one timer is also quite annoying.

Apparently you haven't seen Dmitry Afanasenkov play.

That's not a glitch. It's one of the rules pertaining to delayed off-sides. Rule 626 (d): If a player legally carries or passes the puck back into his own Defending Zone while a player of the opposing team is in such Defending Zone, the "off-side" shall be waived and play permitted to continue. (No "delayed whistle")

PBRyan, I went ahead and tried your little code. Didn't work. Nothing happened. I got to the screen you indicated, but when there you are presented with two options: Format hard drive, or rename hard drive.
