McAmmond Injured

Recommended Posts

Oh my, it seems the Flyers are hoping to weasel around Downie's suspension...

According to GM Paul Holmgren, the plan is to deal with the suspension in small chunks, while keeping Downie playing in the AHL. Holmgren said that Downie would play for the Phantoms and be recalled to the Flyers on days when the Phantoms are not playing. On those days, Downie's salary would be counted against the Flyers' cap. - Philadelphia Inquirer

Sneaky bastards...Will the League let them do that? Or, can they not prevent it. Don't you have a limited number of call ups you can use (barring extreme injury situations)...or is that only in teh playoffs.

The "Bat Phone" to the NJ Devils must've been ringing off the hook...

Holmgrem: Hi...Lou, It's Paul..

Lou: Hi Paul, Yeah, I heard about the suspension...so, what you need to do is...

Holmgren: Wait, let me get a pen.

With any luck the AHL will require that it be served before they will allow him to play there.

So does this mean that Canadians will stop booing Jack Johnson every time he touches the puck?

No

Some probably will still boo him, but i never did i think Downie got what he deserved, and i also think Jack Johnson is a good player anyways.

Anyone know the history of the AHL honoring NHL suspensions?

After seeing this hit over and over again....I saw something else just now that I don't think has been mentioned.

Watch the way Downie comes down against the boards...not only is he reckless/dangerous in they way he hits McAmmond...but he lands right at the base of the boards, and could have very easily hurt himself pretty badly.

Totally reckless and stupid. Hopefully the next guy that goes head hunting like that gets 25 games...add 5 games to every incident until a hit like that is a full year suspension.

haha I like how on OTR the other day, Salmmon (sp?) said that he thought it was a hard hit but shouldn't deserve a suspension.

Who's Salmmon? Borje?

Lots of people I talk to around here (Toronto) that play hockey don't think the hit deserved a suspension, and I haven't heard anyone who thinks the 20 games is reasonable or justified in light of how the league has operated in the past. Obviously the NHL is moving in a new direction though, but I still think the guidelines the league has for handing out discipline are just ridiculous.

I think one thing everyone can agree on is that if this hit happened in say 1995 or something there is 100% no way Steve Downie is suspended for it.

Gee, so if something was ok in the past the it should be ok now? Great, I've been considering resurrecting the Triangle Trade and this settles it.

When did I suggest that simply because something was previously allowed that is should remain that way? I didn't.

I just said that this hit wouldn't be grounds for suspension 10, or even 5 years ago. The league is moving the sport in a direction that in my opinion is unnecessary and ill advised. It is 'change for the sake of change' and I think it sucks. Sure you want things to naturally evolve and improve, but I think the league has just gone way too far.

The puzzling lack of consistency they show in how the game is officiated and how discipline is handed down is turning a lot of long time fans, like myself, off the game. If you watched the Tor/Ott game last night it was a complete joke. Two highly questionable calls on goals, seemingly random minor penalties, overall I found the officiating to ruin what was otherwise an exciting and fast paced game of hockey.

I think the Downie suspension is a perfect example of this lack of consistency. Heatley is convicted of vehicular homicide, doesn't get suspended a game. Bell's DUI is 15 games. Downie's hit is 20 games. Jansens elbow on Kaberle is 3 games. Neil's hit on Drury is zero games. I mean you can go on forever. It just doesn't make sense. I've played hockey for 19 years, I'm a life long fan, and I am losing interest in the game beacuse I don't know what a penalty is anymore, and I'm sick and tired of watching the officials often have a larger role in the outcome of the game than the players do.

The style that you have repeatedly stated a preference for is not acceptable anymore. Interference, obstruction and now, head shots are being penalized. This is not "change for the sake of change", this is fixing something that has gone wrong. In the old days players weren't regularly wrapped up in a bear hug simply because they were near the net. Somehow that became acceptable and the NHL required the referees to enforce the rules more strictly. There has been a marked increase in the number of head shots in the last year or two so the NHL is now trying to address that new and unacceptable behavior.

The Bell suspension is Bettman trying to keep up with the NFL so he doesn't look bad. The public response to the new NFL policy has been positive from the vast majority of the public so it makes sense that Bettman would try and emulate that.

The also NHL sent a video to every team in the offseason showing the types of hits that would not be tolerated, Downie's hit was far worse than just about anything on that video. It's the first time the NHL has even appeared to take a suspension seriously since the Bertuzzi incident. The warning and video by their very nature, invalidate the precedent set by the Neil, Janssens or Armstrong hits last season.

The officials are actually playing less of a role now than they ever were before. By choosing to ignore some penalties and call others, they had far more impact on who would win the game than they do now. Calling every penalty makes it far easier for players and fans to know what is a penalty and what isn't. If you still can't figure out what is and is not a penalty, try reading the rule book.

Lastly, if you aren't going to do anything but bitch constantly, don't bother posting. I was actually looking to see how many productive posts you've had lately and there haven't been many.
