Biggest Tallest Blade!

Recommended Posts

So, I have been using a whip flex shaft, switching in between the Hull prostock curve and a Drury blade. I love the kick on my shot, but it's useless taking hard passes. The puck just skip and jump right over the Hull blade. It's too short, I was told, and the felx on my stick is creating lots of bounce when the puck hit my stick.....does that make sense? I know, practice makes perfect, but I have been told to try using a stiff shaft and a taller, bigger blade. So, my question is, what is the tallest and longest retail blade out there? JR? Mack? any suggestions? I'd like to keep it similar to a Drury curve, with some loft on it. Anyone has a regular blade Innovative Polarfibre? Mine is a tad too stiff for me.... Thanks!

You might be able to get away with a lidstrom/lecavalier... But make sure you are closing the blade slightly and accepting the puck when it comes to you.

...And you need to work on your hands.

just spend a little time working on your hands. If your good, you could catch a hard pass with a $5 Mylec stick with a plastic blade. Looking for a new stick is like people who buy $500 skates thinking that they will make them better skaters. (not trying to pick on you at all, just being honest)

I doubt its the stick, You can make the puck jump over your stick the same way if your using 105 flex or a 70 flex.

You can't get better if you don't think you can. A taller blade will help but you're still going to be missing passes if you don't work on accepting hard passes.

I think the Lecavalier/Lidstrom would be your best bet, MAYBE you can get away with a Datysuk. Those are the tallest blades I can think of, besides Selanne's pro pattern. ;)

Iceman you know what funny im actually playing at that rink with the big stick this weekend. btw the lidstrom/lecavalier is pretty much the only ones i can think of enless you find some prostock curve that has a huge blade.

TPS Morrow is pretty tall as well.

Cradle the pass and you'll be able to get away with any blade.

He's got it. This is the one thing I am good at- taking hard passes......Either roll your wrists a little or lead the pass with your blade (to absorb some momentum).....or better yet, both!

The only time I dont use these techniques is when I am doing a redirect- I have been told by people I regularly play against that they know I am going to redirect just by watching to see if I lead the pass as it is coming in.

How long have you been playing hockey for????

Most people who start out want results right away...you don't get get soft hands overnight. Practice, practice, practice.

For the record i use a whip flex shaft + a RP blade.

I suggest using a wood stick if you still can't recieve your passes properly.

I had a guy on my team who thought it would make him look better if he tryed to shoot passes instead os just passing, he would put all his weight into a pass 2 feet away but back tot he point after a while i figured out if i was going down the ice and he did that i put one hand on my stick and let it hit the heel of my blade and it would only bounce off an inch or two and the problem was over.

lidstrom is your best bet, but with the curve of the hull you could try to cradle the puck from the toe of the blade to the heel as it comes in. work on putting your hands out in front of you when you receive the puck...you almost want to have them in an awkward looking position almost like a cross check with your blade on the ice and when the puck comes cradle it and accept it by bending both elbows in so that the blade and the puck are moving together in the reception. by working on the you should be able to accept/receive passes much better, but if you can shoot with a stiffer shaft i might agree with moving in that direction as well. by the way, i can remeber seeing hull himself having this problem with his sticks occasionally, so i would say it is not totally your hands and it is certainly more difficult handling the puck with such an incredibly whippy shaft. try something a little stiffer and see how you like it, but the form suggestion remains no matter what stick you use. the other thing you could try, sort of on the lines of what oggy_3 was suggesting, is "killing" the puck when it gets to you, meaning that instead of receiving it traditionally, stiffen your wrists and sort of kill the puck's movement with your stick. this is, in my experience, far more difficult with a whippy stick, but its just another suggestion. hope this helps.

Old SW Elias.

I wsa going to reccomend that, but he said something similar to his drury. You could row a boat with that thing.

It wasn't quite as bad as the old Easton Thornton.

Get a golf ball and stickhandle with that for 10 minutes every day. After just a couple days you should see some serious improvement.

I think a tennis ball would work better for softening up the hands. Pass a tennis ball to yourself off a wall and work on cradling it with the blade angled down.

For accepting really hard passes try loosening your hands a bit when the puck is inbound. A guy I work with said that when he was with the Stars they would have practices when Hitchcock would only allow them to accept passes with one hand, and this technique worked even then. Seem counterintuitive but practice it a bit, it works.

Hahaha Mitchell

He wasn't using his hands for that.

Mitch's the man though, I wouldn't mess with him. LOL Sue made it back to Novi - G-Money is gonna be screwed as she is the Rental Nazi.
