Hey guys, I know I'm new to the board and everything but I need some help with something. I was assigned a paper in my business course on something business related so I decided to write it on my future aspirations to open a hockey shop, but with a different twist. I came up with a survey and a friend suggested I post it on here with an explanation of what I'm doing. Anything you guys give me is helpful, thank you in advance.

I don't know. If on the ice, yes, if just on a skill pad, no.

B. No- I think most people know the technology

-Tough call on this. For skates I'm definitely traveling, for other jazz I just need to try it on. That means I'd patron the store, I try to online buy big bargains online.

B. No

12. If you were a shop owner and you had the chance to allow customers to test out the equipment before they bought it, would you implement it?

B. No- Don't want bratty kids jumping on $200 sticks, they sell well enough on their own, plus demo equipment can't be sold as new.

A. Around $100, but I'm a cheap guy and expensive shit isn't going to make me the next Gretzky

14. Recently, Nike/Bauer Hockey introduced a customizable stick program and other companies are following their lead. What types of gear would you most like to see introduced in these programs?

E. None of the Above. Paying a ton more to get your name and color is stupid IMO. Everything besides sticks can be customized either by end user or custom skate purchases.

A. $120 CDN - usually looking for pro stocks on sale.

5. What is your biggest fear with buying a new hockey stick?

E. None of the above. - because I buy pro stock (for the price, not the 'pro stock' factor) I am afraid of it breaking very quickly and with no warranty I'm screwed. But I am generally easy on sticks so it's not a great worry to me.

6. Allowing me to try out the equipment would make me more apt to buy it.

A. True - I like the shooting ranges some stores have. Test riding skates would be cool too, I've heard of it, but never seen a place that does it.

7. Would you spend a small price added to the stick to test a demo of it out beforehand to see if you like it?

B. No - Like I said, I've seen it for free...so maybe like a buck or two, but anything more than that I wouldn't want to pay.

8. Do you often wonder what technology could possibly be in this particular piece of equipment to make it so expensive?

B. No - I understand the technology in equipment is only one of many factors that influence price. Nobody is holding a gun to my head, if it's too expensive for me, I just won't buy it.

9. If there was a shooting trainer available to you at a small price per hour, would you use it to improve your game?

B. No - Don't really know what a shooter trainer is, but doubt I would want to use one, I can shoot alright myself thanks.

10. If the staff at that certain location was not knowledgeable and helpful towards your selection, would you take the time to go to another retailer for the same product?

C. I know enough on my own, I’ll buy it online. - Honestly I've never ran into an 'expert' at the retail level who was knowledgable enough to influence my purchasing decision, so I generally don't care how much they know, I shop alone.

11. Would the price of online shopping deter you from buying from your local hockey retailer?

A. Yes - are you talking about the 'costs' of shopping online or the fact that the prices are lower? I'm guessing the latter, so yes, lower prices online can and do deter me from shopping locally.

12. If you were a shop owner and you had the chance to allow customers to test out the equipment before they bought it, would you implement it?

C. I don't know- I would need to examine the costs/benefits of such a program more carefully, it obviously seems like a good idea but I wonder why if that's the case such programs are pretty rare, perhaps the costs are prohibitive.

13. Composite sticks in 2002 ranged in price of $100.00 to $150.00 USD. Today, they cost anywhere between $49.99 to $289.99 USD. What is your maximum price for a stick?

A. I would probably go up to $200 CDN for a top end retail version if I could find it (XXXX, Stealths are around $300-$320 here)

14. Recently, Nike/Bauer Hockey introduced a customizable stick program and other companies are following their lead. What would you like to see in these customizable programs that isn't already there?

A. I'd like to see someone come out with an extensive custom fitting process for skates. Most people on here know you can go the custom route though a rep or whatever, but it's almost like a secret, nobody advertises it, the prices are shadowy.

14. What they have now, in my mind is not customization. True customization is building a product speifically for you, you determining all the specs. That will never happen for the retail market though.

I would expect the demo fee to be unrelated to the stick price.

I would love to have a rapidshot system nearby

In the past, I would. Now I generally know what I want and locate it through friends. The shops in this area do not employ staff that knows their product well.

11. Would the price of online shopping deter you from buying from your local hockey retailer?

A. Yes

12. If you were a shop owner and you had the chance to allow customers to test out the equipment before they bought it, would you implement it?

B. No

Having recently been a shop manager, it's just not economically realistic to do that without cooperation from the manufacturers themselves. If you do a high volume or operate something like a rapidshot system, you could get away with it.

No (why should I pay to demo it, they don't do it with golf clubs)
