Definitely try to get in to your LHS and try on a few different brands. I've used an old school CCM HT2 for years and recently decided to look into a new lid - I'm a broke university student so I just wanted something cheap. Came across the Bauer 8000 at cyclonetaylor.com for 39.99CDN and considered it but I've never liked EPP foam helmets before. Went locally to check it out and it fit WAYYYY better than my CCM, I was blown away. I'd suggest checking out that deal for sure - amazing helmet for super cheap - but make sure you try some on and see what you think feels best.

OK, how about this, don't go into your LHS and try on a few helmets if intend to buy online. Be a honest person and just make your online purchase using the little picture on the screen. Don't scam your local store. If you make an online purchase and choose the wrong fit, suck it up. Online prices are cheaper because they don't have showrooms or staff to deal with customers. Jeeze, are there no honest people out there. LHS's are not showrooms for cyclonetaylor or any other web site. And being a poor college student is a BS excuse.

Oh and for the orig poster, there was SOME very good advice in this thread. Fit is very important. All the manufacturers make great helmets with similar features that are priced very close to each other. The B5000/5500 and the 8k/6k are both great helmets packed with features. Find the one that fits you best and go for it.

I am so tired of reading your contributions. I'm prety certain every 2nd post you make is to complain about people who try things on at a LHS and end up buying it online.

You're calling people "dishonest" for doing this? There is practically no one on earth who has not gone to a retail store to try on/see an item, and ended up purchasing it at a different location. That's taking advantage of the store and then robbing them of business b/c you'd rather save some money by going elsewhere!

By that definition then, you are correct. There are no honest people out there!

And I'm tired of people like you who like to scam their LHS. Why do you think I make these postes, I've been scammed by a lot of aholes. But I guess you don't understand, the dishonest part is going to your LHS to try on an item you KNOW you will be buying online. F'n sneaky bastards. You know it and I know it, don't defend them. The guy makes a post telling another board member to make sure he goes to his LHS and try it on before he buys online, and I'm the bad guy. BTW, this is WAY different than going to a few local stores to check items with no intent to scam and then buying at one of the stores. Using a local store as a trying on room for your online purchase is dishonest, and it cost the LHS money.

I've said this 100 times, buy online all you want, just don't use your LHS as a showroom. The reason LHS's prices are higher is because they HAVE to put on a showroom and this makes expenses higher. But most idiots don't understand this. It's a futile battle and yes I'm going to post on here anytime I see some scammer encouraging this behavior.

The Intake is a very nice helmet as well. It fits well, but it gave me big head syndrome.

uhhhhhh FUSION???

The best fitting helmet I've tried on is the 5500. Closest to that for me seemed to be the Itech HC100 and the Intake - only problem with the Intake are the two little extended sections of hard foam at the corners of the back of the neck that dig into my non-existent neck - lol. The RBK is a sharp lid, but it didn't fit me at all.

As for the on-going LHS debate, there are two sides to that story. Rousseau, which is prolly the largest LHS in the Montreal area charges scandalous prices for pretty much everything they sell. They also will not even make an effort to match local stores that are selling the same products for less - case in point: I picked up a RBK warmup suit at Rousseau's a week or two ago. The jacket at Rousseau's was $80 there, whereas HockeyGalore over n St. Anne's was selling it for $20 less. When I asked the manager about this I was told their prices were firm. I paid it anyway since I was there and I am a relatively impatient creature, but it didn't impress me, as I have put quite a few dollars through that place. The regular price at one store being lower shows the markup they are charging. Because of that, I have no quarrel about using the store as a fitting rom from now on. I will still buy things there, but I will not give them more than I can get the same thing for somewhere else.

I don't see what's the problem. Let's compare it to a retail store. You walk into the store. Does that mean we'll need to start paying everytime we go in the store because we're costing them electricity and heating(or AC)? You try on the hat, without any help. You see that it fits, but leave it on the shelf anyways and leave. The next week, you walk in another store. You see that exact same hat, and see that it's on sale. You buy it there because it's a good deal. Does that mean you scammed the other store, that you weren't honest?

Your missing the point..the point is going in with the intention of just using the store as a fitting room. Finding that specific product trying it and getting help finding it, and then leaving and buying online. Browsing just happens...I mean it's what all them middle/high schoolers do on weekends at the mall. It's just deliberately going in to a shop and doing so is the issue. And you can create all sorts of scenarios in your head if your thinking about it...but all your doing is making an excuse to justify what you want to do.

I know, but it's the same thing as browsing. The first retail store would be the showcase in this point, and the second retail store where the purchase to be made would be buying it elsewhere...in this case, the internet.

well theres going to be many variabilities involved, the example you said isnt that big of a deal but doesnt really pertain to the original statement. i think the big issue is knowing that you're going to buy something online, but using your LHS to "try" on the items you are going to purchase.

i mean i work at national sports in my area and i buy alot of things at the store but i wont lie, i bought skates online that were extremely cheap. its just kinda frustrating even at a salesman level when more people now a days come into the store, try on a bunch of things and leave. some people dont even bother to put stuff back properly, they just try it on then leave it laying all over the place.

As I said your missing the point..it's the intent to do so. Browsing ain't a problem..I mean I browse when I get my skates sharpened. But I'm not there jotting down exactly what I need and then proceeding to order off Giant/Monkey

How often do you just browse and spend time making sure to find the exact fit?

As sc37 said, "intention" is the key word. If you go to the store with the intention of finding out what you want, knowing you are going to buy it online then , yes, you are definitely using your LHS. Same as if your girlfriend asks you to try on a sweater because your the same size as the guy she wants to be with.

You can rationalize if you'd like, but you are acting in bad faith.

If I buy something online, I make sure to ask myself if the item or a rerasonable facsimile is available at the LHS. If not, I make an extra effort to lay down some business on him for the pricier things like custom equipment or lids and skates that require fitting. I take care of them and they take care of me.

Its OK to buy things from other places when you know exactly what model and size you need, or if size & fit is not that important (rare). But when you are not sure of sizing or feel in the stuff that needs fitting, you should make sure to support your local shop if they are good people. I just bought skates and gloves for myself from a good guy on this board, but I made sure to drop a larger amount at the local shop for gear my son needs like a stick, helmet and cage, shoulder pads and shins.

It would be pretty low brow if I took my kid in to try on 3 helmets, 2 shins, three shoulders and flex a dozen sticks and walked out with a skate sharpening. Like I said, if your LHS owner takes good care of you when you ask him to, then take good care of him too. Its good business and good for hockey in general. If more people took care of their LHS's, I firmly believe we'd have better equipment and more small boutique type companies that actually know and love hockey and subsequently produce outstanding quality/value gear.

Easy Chief. I didn't say that I go into my LHS and try things on so I can buy them online. I just don't like the way you're expressing your point. I think it's a touch dramatic and over the top to be calling people, who may actually buy a lot of their equipment at their LHS, "aholes", "F'n sneaky bastards", "scammers" etc.

I thought I heard a mention of HELMETS in this thread! Can we get back to that topic please? I'll start the "people that get fitted at thier LHS just to buy online are douche bags" thread if that's what it takes. <_<

Are you in absolute dire need of a new bucket? If you're willing to drop the cash on an 8K then you might want to wait till the 9500 comes out as it should be the same price as the 8K. Seems like a really cool bucket if you're going to drop the cash on it and see it as a long term investment.

I just want to add that I've been wearing my rbk 4k helmet all day and it's like I'm not wearing anything at all.

Quick question...why?

At the time of the post I had just purchased the helmet, and I like to bond with my equipment when I first get it :)

Either that, or I play hockey all day while at the same time using a pda to post on these boards :P
