Crosby whining?

Recommended Posts

Chiming in as I follow the Pens religiously. Anything you do hear about him off the ice is nothing but good things. I read a story of him doing a commercial at the rink before practice, having practice, doing interviews, then doing 5 more hours of resets or takes for another thing. Apparently he's great with Marios kids, he even was one of the Pens that delivered season tickets to some of the ticket holders in town. I know every player has charities and stuff they make appearances for, but everytime I read about Sid he's going above and being just showing his face and saying a few words

To answer Mack, all I've heard of Crosby off the ice, is him blowing off some people I knew at Pens games, on two different occasions. They also heard him being rude to other people, and before someone asks it, no I can't prove it, no I wasn't there.

So just from my knowledge of Sid, he plays well, and allegedly plays the "diva" off-ice, and to me, it seems typical.

I'm wagering that this says more about the people you know than it does about Crosby.

The times I've seen Crosby he's been great with people. Lots of my friends have met him as well and I have not heard about a bad experience with him.

Though I'm not trying to say that he isn't a dick sometimes. But I haven't heard of that.

The Pittsburgh media fluffs their athletes more than any other market I've ever seen. It was funny to hear them all suddenly talk about what an asshole Bonds was once he left because you would have thought he was the second coming of Jesus while he was one of the Pirates.

Alright I concede. But before any Crosby homers get down on me, I 'm not in any way trying to make him out to be a bad guy. If anything I want to see someone break Gretzky's records, or at least some in my lifetime, and I don't care who it ends up being. I don't have anything weird against Crosby. One of the incidents my friends told me about was at an autograph signing, for the record. It doesn't matter though, didn't want it to be such a big deal.

I don't think it's people trying to say Crosby's a saint as much as I think it's about something small that doesn't make him get lumped in with a jackass pro athlete. Unless said incident is Crosby tying a guy up to a chair and railing the guy's GF and making him watch, then I think he's fine. We're all assholes.

Nonsense. Pgh treats their athletes the same as any other city. And there are reporters who have said Bonds was nice to them while they covered him to this day, as well as ones who have said he was a jerk. And he wasn't that dominant when he was with the Pirates anyway, he was one of a group of good to above average players.

Check out the media in a city like NY, Philly or Boston and then compare it to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh still handles their athletes like everyone did in the old days, where you ignore the shortcomings or flaws in your guys. That doesn't happen in major markets like the ones I mentioned. Hell, in those markets you have members of the media that create controversies just so they have more to talk about. Both sides have their positive aspects, and I'm not taking one side over the other, it was simply an observation.

There really is no Pittsburgh hockey media other than Mark Madden. And as much as people might hate him for what he says or how he acts, he's as straight a shooter as I've ever met both on and off the air and doesn't fluff anything. This is the truth and you can either choose to believe it, or be a rogue and think that the Pittsburgh media gives a flying crap about anything other than Steelers Steelers Steelers. I hate the Steelers and cannot stand the constant blowhards that pump them up like they are the Mother Teresa's of the NFL.

Madden is to be commended for his promotion of hockey in Pittsburgh but his actual knowledge of the game leaves a lot to be desired. And his Christmas parties must be fun since he must invite all his "good friends" which includes every Penguin ever if you listen to him tell it.

Ok, then the media other than the "Pittsburgh Hockey Media" doesn't talk about the Penguins. Period. They aren't on any of the radio stations, they aren't on any of the television stations.

I distinctly remember the Pens playoff Game 1 highlights last year against Ottawa being the 2nd SPORTS story, not the 1st, not even the 1st story of the entire broadcast. The first sports story? It was something about the Steelers and one of their offensive lineman deciding to hold out from August practice.

The showed highlights of the Pens game, and that was that. No emotion. No discussion. No interviews of players. Nothing. And that is on EVERY. SINGLE. CHANNEL.

Even in "Hockeytown" and surrounding areas like mine, the horrible Lions take the top story over a fairly successful and flourishing Red Wings team 9 times out of 10. In fact, the Pistons and Tigers during their respective seasons usually make rank above hockey highlights as well. I don't see how this type of sports reporting can be surprising to any hockey fan in the United States.

Also, I think his point is more about -what- the reporters say of the hockey players and other athletes, not how often they are talked about.

Football is #1 in the US, so the media should give it more attention. Small football stories are bigger than hockey stories. The media covers what people are interested in, it's not determined by how good a team is. The Pirates still get lots of coverage here and they're not really even a major league franchise...
