Okposo leaving college to sign with Islanders

Recommended Posts

Selfish move, leaving them in the middle of the season like that. He should have waited until the end of the season and then left, says a lot about how he much he cares about his team.

2 thoughts come to mind

1. Was he failing out and going to be ineligible for the spring semester?

2. There should be a moratorium on players leaving from Oct - March during the college season

I dont know if it was school or whatever. I do think it was somewhat selfish, but at the same time, I think he freaked at his declining stats, and figured I may as well go while my stock is somewhere. Oh well.

Hmm my stats are declining playing College hockey... maybe it'll help if I make the switch to the NHL asap.... not.

He probably got caught either doing something, someone, or nothing or all.

I think it is simply (i) that the team is in a serious malaise and (ii) Simon's long term suspension opened a roster spot. Who here doesn't think the Islanders contacted Okposo once the suspension came down? How does a young kid turn a call like that down?

He says "my team is in a bad position right now and they need me to help them win some games. But I am very interested after the season ends"

Hang on guys. Before we start accusing him of things, hear me out.

First of all, it was NYI who was very aggressive in trying to sign Kyle. I believe it was the series Vs. North Dakota that they were out, and aparently told Kyle they wanted him to leave the U. The words "unhappy with (his) devolopment" may or may not have been used.......

Kyle had to tell Lucia before leaving with the US Junior team, and the night before he struggled with the decision quite a bit. Not sure weather he made that decistion the night before, or the morning of. Late Tuesday night it was looking like about 85-90%.

Guys, Kyle wasnt ineligable for any reasons. He wasnt in trouble, and his grades were not a factor. The Isles put a lot of pressure on him to sign NOW.

"snipes",

That's crap. If they put pressure on him to jump off of a cliff...would he jump? Come on now...you can't be THAT STUPID to believe that the "pressure to sign" got him.

Personally, bad move to show your a quality team guy, not that my opinion matters. I can see him in the middle of an NHL season saying "I'm going to Europe; see ya!" CLASSIC!

As far as school goes, he was on a free ride and can always go back on the less than 1/4 of the signing bonus alone.

The Isles put a lot of pressure on him to sign NOW.

Except that pressure to jump off a cliff is a little different than pressure to start your career, while making a very nice sum of money, and not have to worry about school/homework etc.

That being said, I am really torn on exactly what I think. But the kids a great guy, and he REALLY is team oriented. Well liked by his team mates, and his peers as well. His team mates are obviously upset, and sad to see him go.

On the other hand, imagine someone holding dollar signs and an offer to play in the worlds best hockey league, right in front of you. This may sound a little... well, shitty. But I, along with a whole lot of people envy the decision he had to make.

Unfortunately this shines a bad light on a nice guy. You can bet he'll recieve quite a few "boo's" along with the cheers from the MN crowd.

This has absolutely nothing to do with him being selfish or being a bad team player. Any player at any level on any team needs to straighten their priorities if they get an offer this big from a team at the next level. Any Jr. B player should be smart enough to jump to Teir 1/2 Jr. A!

It's not about the pressure from the islanders. But think about it this way.... if they want him to sign so bad, shouldn't that mean they have big plans for him?

SRI is right, I believe Jack Johnson was in a similar situation at Michigan with the Hurricanes and he repeatedly told them to F off.

and they traded him!! what a mistake.

Article in todays paper quotes Snow, along the lines of them being very disapointed in the coaching Kyle has revieved, and strongly hinted towards them being the biggest advocate for him leaving. I am looking for the article now...
