Who's got the best slap shot?

Recommended Posts

I would pick Sourray and Chara, they are 2 players in the league who can take the puck from a standstill take a stride and beat a goalie with their slapshot. Not many players can do this regularly, but it's a dangerous situation when either had the puck and room to shoot.

Souray, Aucoin and Bergeron have bombs, on forward Rolston and I have to agree with Nolan having a hard one. Ovechkin doesn't really use the slapper besides for one timers. Snapshots/wristshots however, Ovechkin, Kovalchuk and Fisher all have incredible shots.

One more for one of the hardest slap shots, Kurtis Foster. There was a stretch where it seemed like he was taking out a guy a game. I wouldn't be surprised to see it over 100 mph.

That's a great point, being able to beat a goalie who can see it coming is hard to do at that level. I'd add Rolston to those two, I've seen him do it a few times as well.

Now, Rolston seems to be the guy of whose shot goalies are actually afraid. Unlike some of the guys in the thread who don't get it off much in games, goalies know they'll be facing like ten a game from him, and they'll all be fast as hell and *heavy*. He seems to hurt goalies with his shot more than most.

The goalies are afraid because he usually unloads them from below the hash marks - they don't even have time to duck.

Giggy ducked out of the way of one a couple weeks ago and I don't blame him.

I'm going to add Arnott and Modano. Well at least Modano had a laser, I haven't seen enough Stars games in recent years to see if that's held up. Arnott's is heavy as hell though.

Kovalchuk's in terms of accuracy and velocity, is the best IMO. From one-timers anyway. I'd say Souray and Pronger are up there too, even though Pronger's a tool.

I also cast my vote for Modano. Granted, he's my favorite forward, so I'm biased. :P

Mine is for Lidstrom. Its not the fastest, but he can get his shot off without taking his eyes off the net while still giving it some oomph. While he might not score a ton of goals, it is extremely accurate. You dont see him take a big boomer and miss the net by an inch, because the only time he really misses is when he doesnt have a good lane.

Aside from the obvious and without beeing a homer I think Erhoff on the Sharks has a very good point shot. Kilger has a great shot, too.

Someone mention Phaneuf. Was I the only one who was surprised at the skills competition that he did not break or even come close to 100?

I remember a game last year against the Sabres when his slapper went over the net, hit the glass, and everyone was stunned. Woke 'em all up.

All this talk about slapshots has me wondering....

How hard do the best NHL'ers shoot onetimers?

Seem to recall (from commentators) that you get more zip on onetimers than normal slapshots... Or is that just a myth?

That's a myth...welll actually I don't know if it's a myth because I've never heard it before....but it's wrong.

Physics would seem to imply that shooting off of the pass would provide more velocity than shooting a puck that isn't moving. Assuming the pass is coming from any direction other than directly in front of you.

Would it? I disagree, but could be entirely wrong.

Yes it would as the puck has momentum (velocity) that is not stopped and that would be added to the velocity of the shot itself. Obviously some of that momentum would be lost but there would be some energy transfer.

hmm...I think you are right. Using baseball, it's common sense that you can hit a moving ball farther than a ball off a tee, fastball farther than a curveball, etc.

huh, good question then...I wonder why the don't have one-timer competitions at the ASG.

EDIT: You are right. Kinetic energy. I'm a dope.

Can't rule out Mike Greene...he has a cannon of a shot, and it seems rather accurate as I have been keeping up with the Caps a lot lately...very exciting team to watch...hope they make the post season.

I didn't even know Kilger had a good slap shot until i found out he shot over 100 mph in the Leafs skills comp.

106.something...he's got a big shot. Only time he can ever get it off is coming down the wing though, but he is usually good for maybe 5 goals a year off it.

I would give Heatley an honorable mention, I watch a lot of Senators games and when he and Spezza/Alfredsson comes on a 2 on 1 or a 2 on 2, hes got a rocket 1-timer. There was this goal agaist the leafs, he and spezza were rushing on a 2 on 2, they started to slow down, and spezza just left the puck in open ice and Heatley just Rocketed it.

Heatleys good, but the best overall in terms of Accuracy and Power is probobly Vinny Lecavalier, he can pick his corners and hit 100+ MPH.
