Nash's shorthanded goal vs WSH

Recommended Posts

Ovechkin maintains his speed with the puck very well, but he's never been a quick player by NHL standards. He gets beat or caught every single NHL game, but for his size and weight he's fast IMO (which is probably why people call him "fast")

He's too heavy (frame-wise) compared to e.g. lanky (but big) Nash, who is pretty impressive speed wise.

That was five on three if I recall correctly. They almost game up another one next game. I also recall thinking that I couldn't believe Ovy couldn't catch Nash on that play. Granted, he was on for the shift before the PP and still out then.

I agree with one of the previous posters. Ovie isn't objectively fast compared to other NHL'ers but everything he does, he does at full speed. If he were a bit faster, he would remind me a lot of Bobby Orr.

Nash is a tremendous player, who I have on one of my fantasy teams, I just wish he would be more consistent.

I remember watching the Skills Comp last year and Ovechkin said that he thought he would win the fastest skater. I think he came in 2nd to last. He has that explosion, but not the top end speed. He's quick, but he's not fast.

That play looks a lot like a play agasisnt the Habs a few weeks ago. Ovechkin was in the slot..stick ready...and when the pass went over to him...Plekanec stepped right in front of him and had a clean in on the Goalie SH. Sergei Kostitsyn was just leaving the box, and it became a 2 on 0.

Nash is fast but not quick. He had his momentum going forward while the other guys were standing still or moving the other way. Once he got up to speed, they couldn't catch him.

You can thank the refs for tieing up morrisonn for that goal ... What was a ref doing in the middle of the ice there?

That was his second goal that the ref tripped the defenceman. This goal was a clear breakaway.

Even though he caught Backstrom and Ovechkin standing still, it was still a great play to pick off the pass and score while short handed.

One reason for why Ovechkin couldn't catch Nash on that 5-on-3 was because Ovechkin was out there for the entire powerplay up to that point. I was actually rather impressed that Ovechkin got as close to catching Nash as he did. Not taking away from Nash or Ovechkin, just stating an observation.

I think ovechkin is fast, however I don't think he is among the faster in the league.

With him, he can stickhandle, shoot and deke at top speed, so while he may not have the top gear a lot of players have, what he can do while on his own top gear is pretty impressive

As opposed to Nash who was out defending a 5-3 penalty kill? (even though it was 30 seconds less, I'd sure take 50 seconds of being on a 5-3 PP over defending a 5-3 kill for 30 seconds)

Nash is that fast, he might not accelerate as fast as Ovechkin, but Ovy can't catch Nash at top end. Just getting those extra 2-3 strides on ovy was enough for Nash, he's not gonna catch him straight off the bench at that point.

Nice work with the camera first off all, first thing i thought was it was some youth hockey game, with the lighting and stuff but thats just me and my messed up head.

It's too bad ovechkin isn't using the rocket runners. I'm sure then he would have caught Nash.

I don't know Nash seems to be pretty good about conserving energy on the PK. Also with Nash's reach defending that 5-3 is easier than it would be for a 5'5" guy like me.

You're right though those extra 2 strides made the difference in the end.

Great play by Nash, although I'm sure he would have perfered if it worked the first time that he tried to break up a pass on that kill.
