NHL to sell adspace on jerseys

Recommended Posts

If the NHL sells out and does that I will never go to another NHL game or buy another NHL jersey again.

Oh get real, you'll pass up the opportunity to say a Game 7 game in the Stanley cup all because theres an ad on the jersey. I highly doubt it.

They have to do this because no one is going to games or buying merchandise as it is. It's hardly selling out when all of pro sports is littered with players who would jump ship at the drop of a hat for a bigger paycheck anyhow. Think Vinny would stick around a struggling TBL team if a contender whiffed a fatter contract under his nose? 50-50 chance at best. The point is that, nothing is really sacred in any league, though there's plenty of talk about "tradition" and "heart" and "loyalty" all over the place. It's a really moving and romantic thought, but it's not true. Why did the player's bring this up in he first place? Because it presents everyone with an opportunity to make more money. End of story.

Like the lightning are going to a game 7 anything anytime soon... Yes, at that point I will boycott giving my money to the NHL the best I can. I wont stop watching hockey but I won't give my money to them.

Actually the NFL and NBA have been rumored to also be thinking about doing this with their jerseys along with additional spaces allotted on the court and field for ads to be taken out on.

I don't have any links but my friend only likes the NFL and NBA and reads up on each league daily so I'm guessing it has some truth behind it. He was talking to me about it a couple days ago and also today at work.

I don't really have a problem with it. I mean if it brings more money and keeps the NHL around I mean isn't that what we all want, a better and lasting NHL for us to watch and attend. Note: not saying it will get better but that's a whole different topic and discussion.

Brodeur and Turco proposed this during the lockout, looks like they wouldn't take no for an answer. The thing is, they wanted a big piece of any revenues for themselves last time around. Personally I think it's a terrible idea but I believe it will happen. If the NHL turns it down, I would expect the NHLPA to sue them. The league hasn't done much to increase revenues through anything other than ticket increases or new merchandise, they haven't developed any new revenue streams.

I can't call this a surprise either. It's done in the rest of the world and nobody cares. If it helps the game and the ads are fairly small, I'm all for it.

I don't want to see it overwhelming the jersey but a few small ads? Meh...

We do it here on Aussie rules football guernseys, when its done lightly and tastefully, it looks good. All uniform changes in the AFL go through league approval but. The money helps keep my club in the western suburbs of melbourne where it belongs, rather then having to lose our home and move inter state.

My team and their logos....

I don't like the idea either. The the athletes here look like walking billboards. Although it's coming to North America sooner or later. No company says no to money, and the NHL is no exception.

I wouldn't mind it if its kept clean and simple like soccer. I don't like the Euro hockey jerseys though, too busy. Just hope they don't put Coca-Cola all over the posts and crossbars please. The only problem would be that sponsors change very often and some people may want to buy the most current jersey, might get pricey.

I've seen Jr. teams with ads on the goal posts....usually McD's I think. The NHL should take that lead too.

I think ads can be done without being too gawdy...especially in the HD age...it's so clear...that they don't have to be huge to stand out.

This idea would have been great during the lockout, but definatly not now, the jerseys are fine the way they are and i think the nhl jerseys will look terrible with ads on them.

Maybe that can do it like houseleague jerseys...put the name near the bottom hem...and the "sponsor" at the shoulders.

I'm not sure if I'm kidding or not.
