One-Hit Wonders

Recommended Posts

Chris Kontos - 9 goals in 11 playoff games in 88/89. Although he was kind of a 2 hit wonder as he had a 51 point season with Tampa Bay.

Evgeny Davydov 1992-93 - Winnipeg Jets 28 21 49 - never had more than 12 points in a season after that.

Not NHL, but Bill McDougall comes to mind. In the 1992-93 Calder Cup playoffs, he played 16 games and had 26 goals and 26 assists (52 points!)

Since then, it was 22 games in Tampa, then Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and the OHA.

do u happen to kno where he is now? playing/living? after he left the local pro team where i used to live in switzerland it was like he fell off the planet...

How about a two-hit wonder?

Jimmy Carson puts up 107 points for the Kings in 87/88, then gets traded for Gretz. Gets 100 in 88/89, then only reaches more than 50 twice the rest of his career.

Having physical talent is one thing, but you need the mental game to stick.

Being expected to replace the Great One, who was still in his prime, as a 21 year old in EDM killed him. Noone could have lived up to the expectations of those fans at the time. Then having to go play behind Yzerman and Federov didnt help either.

man if you can't be mentally fit in any sport that can affect your every move and choice, and that goes with being confident, once your confidence waivers it is hard to get it back and that can really mess up every aspect of your game

Jim Craig- Gold Medal hero, NHL zero. I still love him for his year in 1980. The NHL wasn't going to be easy after that ride with Herb Brooks and Team USA.

I remember playing against Fata when he was all the rage - insane wheels, but always seemed to be going a hundred miles an hour to nowhere. Same thing with Malhotra - all the physical gifts in the world, tireless worker, but he just didn't understand. They're hardly failures - they've both had pretty durable pro careers so far - but they sure haven't lived up to their 1-6/7 draft positions.

Malhotra was never projected to be any sort of an offensive threat when he was drafted. The THN draft preview from that year said something like "will never be more than a third-line forward, and if you need him for scoring you're in trouble".

He does shine a couple of times a year offensively, but as far as being a consistent offensive threat it doesn't happen, nor was it expected to.

another one you could say doesn't live up to expectations and could be a one-hit wonder but he really hasn't put up big numbers to be considered that is Rick Nash...so much hype around this guy who hasn't really done anything to great....wow one Richard trophy for 41 goals the lowest total dating all the way back to the 69-70 when Esposito had 43 but he also had 99 points.....Selanne had 47 in 97-98 but he also had 107 points....Nash has been consistent with his 50 point seasons but I don't think he is the "superstar" people make him out to be

I'm from Ohio and have FSN Ohio and they talk him up so much and make him out to be a player that is the greatest they have ever seen and it pisses me off.....and i hate the CBJ cause I think Columbus was and is one of the worst choices for a NHL hockey to go...sorry bout that rant but I hate CBJ hockey soo much I wish they would fold and move somewhere else like a Canadian city that loves hockey and deserves to have a team there

He does pretty good for being on a team that doesn't know what offence means.

They had enough talent to score goals but Hitchcock can kill any teams offense.

Keith Ballard comes to mind for me, 39 points as a rookie defenseman on a lousy Coyotes team. He was all the rage in all the hockey pools I was in, but now he's worth less then a bag of pucks. And I agree to a large degree with Rick Nash, while he has great hands and size. He's more of a Hejduk type player, above average hockey sense and can shoot the puck well, but needs a dominant centre to truly excel. A lot of the hype just came from the fact that he score so many goals and so fast in his career, and a lot of them in highlight fashion. Although that was more a result of him just staying at the other teams blue line all game, which is what you'd expect with the mess the blue jackets were before Hitchcock.

Rick Nash?

He's an all-star, a Richard Trophy winner (who cares how many goals he had, he had more than ANYBODY else in the NHL), and is a fixture on the Canadian National team, which last time I checked was a pretty decent squad.

Watch the guy play international hockey with some good teammates and you realize how good he is.

Mack was exactly right, Nash has no offensive support. The only player on offense who consistently helps out on offense is Zherdev. I have Nash on my fantasy team and it stinks that he's usually a one-man band. If you watch many of their games, I think you'll agree...

actually i get to watch just about every game they play that is on fox sports ohio, and i still feel he is overrated....a great player makes all those around him great and he doesn't do that, and for him winning the Richard trophy, that was a really really weak scoring year in case you missed it

How is he one of the players who are meant to make others around him better? You realise those players are playmakers and that's not what Nash is. An argument can obviously be made that Ovechkin does more with less, but he also doesn't make players better around him the way a Crosby or Gretzky could.

I wasn't saying that he was one of those players that is supposed to make others around him better, I was just saying that if he is a great player he would make those around him better....any great player makes those who play with them better.....but I simply said that because mrusse01 said watch him play international competition when he is surrounded by good players and you will see how good he is....I was just stating that if he is as good as people say he is other players on his team that are on his line would play better because of him and he just wouldn't be playing great with other great players

If a defense only needs to worry about one guy they can target him. If a football team can run the ball but have Trent Dilfer as QB, you know you can play run the whole time. You add another REAL threat on his line and you'll see how good he is. He's not an elite player but he's better than most people give him credit for.

I don't think the type of player Nash is (goal scorer, good at it but not much else it seems) is going to make those around him better. It's easier for a playmaker to make those around him better since they're adept at setting people up, but a goal-scorer can either do it on his own (which he's done) or with some help (which I don't think he's gotten much of). I can't say I've seen many of their games, but has he had a really good centre on his line? I can't think of any solid centre Columbus has had. At least not ones good at anything offence-related.

Last game I remember he was out with Peca for the most part. I'm not sure how much his game has dropped off, but he'd be about the only solid center that I can think of on the roster.

Solid, at least what I remember of him, but not someone known for offencive prowess. I mean Fedorov was a sliver of his former self his whole time there.

I have to disagree. Many NHL front office people as well as players say that the city of Columbus is a great place for a hockey team, and, in fact, guys like Brad Richards seek out the opportunity. There are many guys who play in Columbus that take up residence as well. As JR and Chadd can tell you from their trip- Columbus is a very good city for hockey. The fans in Columbus have been avid for such a crappy team, too. Don't forget, they're not used to losing in Columbus (Ohio State football is the main game in town).
