D aka speck 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2008 As for Gladiator et al, didn't you folks know that all ancient Greeks, Romans, Mesopotamians, and the like had proper English accents? The worst example of that is Sean Connery as a Russian sub captain.Even worse than when Connery played the Spaniard, Ramirez, in the Highlander movies? At least Sean Connery has a European accent.Scottish or not, he's definately not Russian! He IMO can play any Latin based language and pull it off regardless...Especially for English speaking idiots.
chippa13 1844 Report post Posted March 7, 2008 Technically, English is a Germanic language that borrowed many Latin words via French.
KBO25 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2008 As far as actors in American made movies speaking in/with english accents, I have to ask, would you rather watch a movie in a foreign language with sub-titles?Even if you answer yes to that question, I'm quite sure the box office would not.I love hunt for Red October and when I read the book, Connery's portrayal of Ramius was pretty true.I like SC as an actor and if I like the actor/actress I could care less if he/she is portraying someone who should be speaking a different language. jww83 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2008 One of the one's that I always used to notice and it bugged the hell out of me was in cool runnings. I think there are a few but from memory one of the standout ones was when they were doing their qualification run in 'pre-painted' sled yet in close ups of the sled during their push start etc you can see the sled is painted in the black yellow and green state that they dont do until later in the movie. There are more but i'd have to dig it out.
lamplighter 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2008 why does jude law have an English accent as a Russian in enemy at the gates and ed Harris has an American accent as a german Nazi? Also in the matrix reloaded in the freeway scene morpheus stabs the side of that semi truck so he can jump onto it, he reaches down like a foot when he stabs it but jumps down like 4 feet onto it. Also in the same scene when the agent jumps onto the semi and the camera "does" a 360 the sword is not stuck in side.
ultraman7k 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2008 c'mon! everyone knows the English Accent is the universal substitute for any language!but seriously, i couldn't tell you. Maybe Jude Law and Co. couldn't do a plausible Russian accent, and Ed Harris couldn't do a German one?

Allsmokenopancake 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2008 Just watched Breach. Ryan Philipes character was apparently schooled by jesuits, but when they go to the church, he blesses himself incorrectly. As someone raised catholic, and who's secondary school back in sunny donegal was run by priests, blessing yourself is not something you ever forget to do, it's habit. Just a small thing, but it was a mistake

I bet it's instinctive, and I bet you wouldn't make a mistake doing it.In the move, the character was a catholic, and went to jesuit school, yet didn't know how to bless himself properly, thats a movie mistake, the point of the thread. And if you make mistakes blessing yourself after going to a catholic school, then that says more about your learning curve than the teachings there

Like I said, I may have been raised Catholic and attended a Jesuit university but religion wasn't forced down my throat there. I can count on 2 fingers the number of times I attended mass at school. Being a weddings and funeral church attender these days, it is no stretch to not do things properly at a Catholic mass. Don't forget, in the movie the kid wasn't even close to a practicing Catholic. My bet, the error was intentional to convey that fact.

Then aliens come and try and kill everyone but his daughters love for water ends up being the demise of the aliens, Thus renewing his faith in the lord.
