Normal glove wear?

Recommended Posts

I just started to play hockey more regularly about 2 yrs ago and have gone through 2 pairs of gloves already. Both, my left palms wore out out pretty fast and now it has a hole, while my right have very little wear, both used for about 1 year (summer and winter, twice a week). I shoot right, btw. Is this normal?

I do have a rubber insert at the end and tape the knob end of the stick with groves (twisting the tape like a rope).

Thanks

Agreed. Are you using black tape? Sometimes that can effect wear on the butt end glove. It also depends on the palm material on your gloves. I go through palms now once every 9-12 months. I play all year round but; both ice and roller.

Use grip tape. The adhesive in regular hockey stick tape accelerates wear. Grip tape doesn't rub off and onto the glove palm. Also Tacki-Mac slide on grips are the easiest on glove leather.

Yea I think thats what hes talking about. It doesn't ruin your palms but the dye does turn your palms the same color as the tape, so I'd just get white grip tape.

also a good tip for longer palm life is to tape a few layers of plastick "sock" tape around the top of your knob. This provides a much smoother surface and a lot less friction to burn thru the palm

It also makes it harder to grip the stick.

Get some of this stuff and then cover it with normal white tape. Your palms will last longer and you will be able to grip the stick without any problems.

I actually found the grip tape tore up my palms faster. I believe it's the friction between the tape and glove that cause wear, and the grip tape has a lot more friction. Here's what I've been doing:

1. Wrap the knob in white tape, preferably the least tacky and adhesive tape you can find. I use Renfrew because it's softer and there isn't as much adhesive coming through.

2. Rub a lot of baby powder into the tape. This removes some of the stickiness.

3. Get your hand wet and work that into the tape. Then do some more baby powder.

After a couple times using it, it should be pretty smooth and not sticky, but not slippery like electrical tape.

Okay, I feel a little better. I though I was doing something wrong.

Lots of good ideas floating around, might try some.

One thing I am guilty of is using black tape, I will switch over to white. Also, I usually buy mid/value range gloves (current CCM 3.0). Is it worth the splurge? Mind you, my hockey budget is not that big.

Monty22, is there a guide on how to reinforce a layer of leather over the palm?

Thanks all.

You would bring it to a place that repairs gloves, like Fix It By Mail or a shoe repair shop. Usually only runs about $10 or so to do a patch or layer over it. I bought one nice pair of gloves (CCM Vector Pro) and replace the palms whenever it needs it. The factory one lasted only a few months as it was very thin, but my repaired palm has lasted a couple months with almost no wear. It runs about $25 per palm.

So you get a nice pair of gloves for $100 to $150, but then repair them at $25 whenever it needs it, and you'll have more protection and save money in the long run.

Anybody know any good palm replacers in Southern California. I've heard some horror storie about the fix it by mail types.

A lot of users here have wonderful stories about fix it by mail. I'm not so sure of other businesses of the same type, but many members have used fixitbymail and been supremely happy.

The way I see it, wearing down a pair of gloves per season gives me the opportunity to get some new ones. There's a reverse side of everything to, there's a positive and a negative.

But honestly, old gloves get nasty. I just can't stand starting another season using stinky gloves, so most of the time I'll start every season with getting some new gloves.

Hey it's kind of silly it's allright to spend hundreds of dollars on new sticks every year, but buying a new set of gloves or exchange the helmet once a year feels like a pimple in the ass.

SRI posted a number, you should probably call to discuss options. I know Eagle will sell palms to places like fixitbymail, but they'll only let you put them on Eagle gloves now. Maybe other companies will do this as well.
