I wonder how they will position the rink inside of a baseball stadium for it to all work out for the fan's in the stands....

Probably from behind the pitchers mound out towards center field, or perpendicular to that line across second base area

when do tickets go on sale??

The League hasn't even realeased the schedule or made an Official Announcement of this game yet. Since It's in Chicago, I'd assume it will be a B'Hawks home game, so tickets will sell on whatever schedule tickets for Chicago games are sold.

The Bears used to play there, they'll use whatever dims they used for football and put the rink facing that way.

I'd like to see them do something like this: (this is to scale, I think):

WrigleyField_hockey.GIF

And put as many people as close to the game as possible...and still have the other 2 sides to erect temporary seating...I'm sure there is a reason that they can't get it in that tight ot the existing structure...I just can't think of it at this moment.

When Hamilton had the outdoor charity game during the loockout, I went and the seats were ridiculously far from the playing surface....and that was a CFL stadium...I'm sure an NFL/MLB would be even worse.

Assuming they're going to bulldoze the pitcher's mound, I'd say those are probable.

Look at the Pens/Sabres game in an NFL stadium. The closest seats were still 100 feet from the glass.

They don't bulldoze the pitchers mound. I have seen some instances where there is wood or metal under the mound and the ground crew just cleans off the bottom edges then picks it up and put it on a big golf cart and move it out of the way.

This is what I was thinking when I first asked the question. Maybe they'll use temporary seating to get some fans closer, but the people in the acutal stadium seating will be pretty far away from the action.

idk how it is at wrigly field how the first row seats are, but at tiger stadium 1st row seats are pretty much on the ground so those 1st couple of rows could be looking at the top of the boards when sitting

According to the NY Daily News, the game will be announced on Monday when the NHL schedule comes out.

Also, they will do a Winter game in 2010 at the NEW Yankee Stadium - Rangers/Bruins. Reasons why they couldn't do it at the old one were that the pipes aren't winterized, there's no point of entry to bring in the generators/compressors to run the ice, and since they will be transitioning things over to the new Stadium (Memorial Park, etc) it would've delayed and brought up the costs of the new Stadium.

From what I had heard, the NHL could've done it at Yankee stadium, but the Yankees wanted the NHL to pay for all of winterizing, access issues, etc. To which the NHL passed on.

More importantly, JR any chance of you being in Chicago for New Years, I think I may know someone who can get us tickets.

I am stoked about the outdoor game. I really enjoy watching those tough NHL guys skating around in goofy knit/wool hats and stuff to keep warm during practice and warmups. Hilarious.

And I'm also excited for the 'Hawks. They deserve to be in the limelight again. Too bad detroit is the opponent. Lord knows I'm sick of hearing about how great the Red Wings are...sheesh.

There are a bunch of us heading to this one. Buzz and the boys from Milwaukee have promised to be sober enough to pick me up at the airport.

Do you know why it has to be Yankee Stadium. I understand the awsomeness of doing it the last year it's there, but if it lost all of it's lore at the new Yankee Stadium why not do it at Shea (a 5 min drive, 45 min walk away from me) or at Giants stadium. I don't understand why it has to be linked to the Yankees. If shea can have the beatles, it can sure host a hockey game. (clearly I'm a mets fan)

But Rangers-Bruins would be awsome anywhere. Can't wait. I do wonder though where they would put me? As a Ranger season ticket holder, I'd be curious to how my seats would translate to a stadium. I hope I don't have to pay extra for this game, I hardly afford my seats as it is.

Yankee Stadium, new or old, is closer to Manhattan than Giants Stadium in the NJ meadowlands or Shea Stadium, new or old. This is also the final season at Shea. There is very little sizzle to sell in going to Queens to see an outdoor hockey game. It will be much easier to hype the game at Yankee Stadium. I don't know anything about the White Sox stadium although I'll bet it has more fan friendly features than Wrigley. Yet, Wrigley has the history that makes it the logical place in Chicago to host the game.

Shea's going to be demolished after this season anyway, so that doesn't work. Giants Stadium would have to involve the Devils.

That's okay, you could have the Beatles. We have God on our side - Pope 3 times. :)

i think the nhl needs to look at how they give out the outdoor classic. the stanley cup champs should be the hosts fo the game. in hte instense of the wings. not only are they going on the road but they will not have their traditional new years eve game this year. it the game was played in det at say comerica park, the big house(u-m), sparten stadium they could have still done both. but none the less i'm looking forward to 2010 when det host the frozen four at ford feild.

Just like last year's cup champs were home for a game in London England?

I'm more psyched that Detroit's in it, I could care less where the venue to the sold-out-in-40-second game is.
