Is my Mission Intake done?

Recommended Posts

I have a two year old Mission Intake that has seen about 100 ice times since I bought it. Unfortunately, I'm a sweater (it's one of the reasons I can't wear a visor - I'm like a fog machine) and the gel pads inside are not staying tightly glued to the EPP. During the course of a game the pads can shift a bit because of this glue issue. I thoroughly dry all my gear after every game by wiping it all down with a towel before hanging it all to dry with a fan blowing over it for better air circulation. Even still, the glue never returns to a dry or high tack state. I've even had pads fall off while taking the helmet out of my bag to hang up.

Is it the end of the line for my Mission Intake or is there some way to salvage the helmet so it can be fully protective again?

I've salvaged helmets with a touch of epoxy or superglue. Stuff like that. I bet the warranty is voided by doing this though.

As mentioned, you can probably glue the pads in place but the warranty is gone once you do it. You might want to stay away from helmets with EPP and glued-on comfort padding on your next purchase. I had the same problem with my Bauer 5000 and I have tried to avoid EPP helmets since then.

Same thing is currently happening to me.

On another note, has anyone else had their helmet crack by the screw adjustments? Mine are cracked I can see it thru the clear plastic piece.

I've seen that happen frequently with the intake and the reebok helmets. Just last week i was sizing a kid for one, found the size and color he needed, then needed to go back to the drawing board because the helmet was cracked out of the box. Right in front where you would attatch the mask. I've seen the missions crack on the side also.

Great timing Reaper!! I just went out to pack the gear for tonight's 6:30 skate. I pull the Intake helmet down to pack it and notice the gel pads have simply slipped out of position to another spot on the EPP! The glue is more like jelly than glue. The pad is not really sticking back in place. The helmet is warrantied through 2011. I still have the HECC sticker on the back with the date. This situation is a bit of a PIA. I found my CCM HT2 featuring some nice rock hard Rubatex foam. I'll slap my old cage on it now to have a back up with me at the rink tonight. I love it when you notice this stuff on your day off away from the Pro Shop!!!

i have had the same problem with a bauer 5000.

i have tried many glues. Regular super glue holds up the best, but eventually they come loose again.

so i just use my itech H95 instead.

I have the same problem with my intake but my gel padding is also very hard and has a crack in it. Is there any way I can get replacement gel packs or do I need to get a new helmet?

Manufacturers won't sell replacement padding for helmets. Ever. It's a HUUUUUUUUUGE liability issue. One time some jackhole gets a concussion from improperly installing his replacement padding, he'll end up owning the company. No company in their right mind will let that happen. Hell, youth hockey teams don't even purchase helmets for their players anymore for the same exact reason--lawsuits.

Your best bet is to replace the helmet.

I saw a kid last winter who had big chunk of his hair missing.I asked him what was up with his head and his father laughs and hands me his Intake, with a bunch of hair stuck to it. Dad had used Gorilla glue and apparently it wasn't quite dry in time for practice. They had to cut it off his head.

I have the same problem with my Mission. I'll take a look at the liquid nails. And on another note, change your screws every so often. When I switched cages, my screws had rusted solid and had to cut and file them off.

I'm a fan of the Mission overall, but if and when I need another helmet, I might look at the Bauers.
