epstud74 24 Report post Posted July 31, 2008 Do any of you in organized leagues run into players who hate to be interfered with in any way? I always seem to run into the whiners that get upset when you dont allow them to get the stick down on the ice or get angry when pushed out of the way when camped in front of the goalie. I know adult leagues from upon a lot of physical contact, but if you cannot handle getting your stick knocked away from the ice or nudged a bit, maybe you should take up adult soccer. Why are guy surprised to get tripped up after they talked smack to the opposing bench on a previous shift?

JJ Thompson94 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2008 It's true, higher levels usually consist of guys who know how to play hockey and like good compitition. Whats worse, I play some beer league games for my buddies' team and theres this team, mostly russian guys that drop like flys the second you touch them. They are like porcelin hockey players that break when you touch them. Then when they don't get a call the bitch at the refs till the break of dawn. I hate those kind of players - just a bunch of crosby wannabes.
coryroth24 15 Report post Posted July 31, 2008 My favorite beer league guys are the ones that goon it up all game, but then the second you shoulder them a little or get a little stick on stick contact, they're bitching like babies. No matter what level you play, you're always gonna have to deal with those guys...

Sed27 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2008 I fully expect to receive some contact when I stand in front of the net (even in men's leagues as it is part of the game). The issue is some d-men think that gives them the green light to hack away at ankles, cross check, and slew foot if you are within ten feet of their goalie. They then get pissed if you give them a bump back. There will always be those that can dish it out but can't take it... I also wonder about the guys who intentioanlly showboat and/or run up the score and then bitch when the opposing team tightens up the checking against them. We have one guy in our beer league that is a gifted offensive player who consistently puts up 80-100 points per season. The problem is he will intentionally pad his points and pull flashy moves in one sided games. He will continue cherry pick at the red line late in the third period when his team is up 10-2. If you even come into any contact or just play him well positionally and don't allow him a clear path to the net, he screams like he has been shot. The really funny thing is the he is also refs. skeeter14 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2008 maybe you should take up adult soccer.Speaking from experience, they are worse. The game i had the other night, had three near fights, and ended with two girls fist fighting. And it was all your typical guy who thinks he's great, gets fouled, starts talking....etc. I'd have to say the ego's/whining is much worse in rec league soccer than anything ive seen at a rink. mattzilla 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2008 I like physical play, even in mens league. I dont like, as people said earlier, guys who dish it out but cant take it. If youre gonna take a shot at a guy whos a lot bigger than you ( and i usually am that guy ) dont bitch and moan when i hit you back later. There are same guys in the league who i have a lot of give and take with, and its been that way for years with them. I love it. We grind away in front of the net, hammer away at each other, nothing cheap, just physical play. When the puck goes back up the ice there is a nudge, a pat on the ass or something to acknowledge it was a good battle. Its a mutual respect and really just a respect for the game that youre not gonna dive the second your touched. its not soccer.I generally don't pick on gee2626 in front of the net. He'll do something shifty and make me look silly.

SB39 2 Report post Posted July 31, 2008 Fun topic. I play in 3 men's leagues: 1 pretty competitive, 1 not as much, and 1 not really at all. There are babies in each, but much more in the second. A lot of guys will whine when they aren't very good and playing against other not so good guys, but then guys that played at club or college level roller will play smart and hard and they shut up quick generally, because they see the light so to speak. My favorite is the rink rat ref, skinny little guy with all high end gear, tries moves he can't pull off, and tries to pick fights most games. I have about 20lbs on this guy, and he's tried to get in my face a few times and pick a fight for the parking lot afterward. All I do is get close to him and calmly say, "Ok." He gets this scared/confused look and skates away... I love my work
chippa13 1844 Report post Posted July 31, 2008 It varies from player to player. I've played with guys who've rode the buses that have the "don't you know who I am" attitude when you put a little tug on them and other guys who take it as part of the game. DavidT 11 Report post Posted July 31, 2008 The leagues Im in have it all. Players who like to play the game and are competitive, players who think they're gods gift to hockey (and once you body'em up bitch and moan, hack and whack), to people who suffer from a severe case of small man syndrome and just want to hurt someone. They are all over the place, in every rink. They think that they are the next Theo Fleury or Brian Gionta. They'll show us! They won't be pushed around! They think that if they body check and play real physical, its almost like getting even with the jocks who shoved them in the lockers.
RadioGaGa 162 Report post Posted July 31, 2008 ...if you cannot handle getting your stick knocked away from the ice or nudged a bit, maybe you should take up adult soccer. It's funny you should say that. I know 2 guys who player adult league soccer (one is also a hockey player) and the number of injuries they get from soccer is ridiculous.Black eyes, bruises, ankle injuries. One guy came in the other day with stitches on his head and a concussion after a guy went into him head first after he had played a ball. So, I guess you are going to have jerks and guys who think scouts are watching or can't let go of past glory in every sport/league. Aussie Joe 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2008 They are in every league I've ever played in. Most of the guys that do whinge are just tossers that need to harden the fark up and deal with the physical side of hockey. Funnily I see a similar type of whinging in both inline and ice. Pathetic some guys that dish out cross checks and slashes yet, get so angry when someone checks them from behind or charges at them. What goes around, comes around. Smitty34 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2008 The people that annoy me are the players that always whine on the bench about people not passing, then, that person tries to go through an entire team, only to lose the puck.
gxc999 7 Report post Posted August 1, 2008 I play light contact or no contact and I only complain about stuff I can't see. I mostly play in front of/around the net, so I'm fine with getting shoved or whatever. Ahole last week elbows me in the spine from behind and shoves me into the net. This jerkoff has done things like this repeatedly, so next game we play his team, payback is really gonna suck for him.

Then they go hide behind there teammates and starts yapping.Another good one is when those same guys go after the smallest guy, which is usually me.
Aussie Joe 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2008 Our goalie used to keep a backup stick just for games against one particular player in juniors that would constantly try to hook and run him. The D took care of him in most cases but when we missed/weren't quick enough our goale would run the backup stick accross the back of the guys leg. The stick was so old it was splintered and rough all along the sides. He still has the stick as a momento. :P
SidCaeser 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2008 This is a fun topic. I've played in several different leagues, and my favorite guy is the one that has a room temperature IQ. This type of guy, we'll call him Mungo, consistently comes up and buttends you or slashes you know where near the play. I politely question him on his tactics, and the response is the same, "It's called hockey F-head." I don't like it it when some chucklenut will break the rules and call it hockey. It's beer league. Doctor Hook 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2008 There's always at least a few in every league. Nobody likes those guys and I for one wouldn't want them on my team. Be a man and handle your business. Somebody f's with me, I either get them back if the situation warrants, or I just let it go (but I never forget).

Nursing a black eye from a loose elbow at the moment, haha. Soccer gets a wrap as being soft, but it's really one of the dirtier sports out there.
