My turn to hurt myself

I'm typing this one-handed so...

I broke my collarbone in 2 places and cracked a couple of ribs Friday night during my Junior A tryout. I play defense, and was coming onto the ice during a change just as my team turned the puck over in the neutral zone. I was therefore a little flat-footed and now had one of the team's big, strong, returning players bearing down on me at full speed. He saw the tight gap I was playing and dumped the puck softly into the corner. The rink we were playing at was a barn with shallow corners, solid boards, and bot a lot of room behind the net. I pivot and manage to arrive at the puck at the same time as this guy, who is bearing down on me at full speed. I manage to shovel the puck off to my partner D to D behind the net, but in doing so, leave myself off-balance and exposed. The guy finishes his hit, riding me into the the boards, and crunches me in. His left shoulder hit my right, and my left hit the boards. I heard it snap and knew it was pretty bad. Luckily mt D partner was able to move thw puck out of the zone off mt pass and I took off for the bench. I went into shock but managed not to pass out, and spent a fun night in the ER.

This was the first bone I have ever broken, but slings and codiene (sp?) are treating me alright. :P

I'm out for 6-8 weeks, plus another 6 or so for rehab. Funny thing is, the GM called me Sunday morning and said that based on what he saw, he was willing to billet me, get me through rehab, and have a spot for me on the team when I recovered enough to play, even if I have to do a stint at junior B. I left my prep school to try out for this team, and don't have a ton of options left. Thoughts? Anyone ever broken a collarbone?

Seriously though, that sucks but.....pain builds character! Ya gotta look on the bright side. ;)

Wow man, hope you have a healthy if not quick recovery. At least you still impressed, so congrats on that ! Best of luck.

Ask your doctor about getting some Tramadol, it's a beauty of a drug.

Good luck on the hockey front also!

Try and get codydramol, second only to my beloved morphine....

My only advice is don't ask your doctor for any narcotics "because someone on the internet said they were good" . If you need something, he/she will give it to you.

Even if I only have one arm?... at least I'm not left handed. Still owe me those Kleenex.

A lot of players use something called Biofreeze for pain.

Codeine always made me sick to my stomach!

I've been using ice on and off, I'll try that. My doc says to eat something with the codeine, or at least drink a glass of milk with it, so far I've been fine, other than being constipated as hell.

I left out the funniest part of the story: while I was waiting in the ER getting registered and all, while still in all my lower body hockey gear, a hawt 20-something nurse comes by and says "I love the smell of hockey gear." She meant it too. Only in Canada.

Broke my collarbone in feb this year from a check similar to yours. First 2 weeks were painful (mostly getting in and out of the bed..) but from there on it was quickly getting better! Was back on the ice after 5-6 weeks, played the first game after 8 weeks. Lifting weights after 7 weeks, took me about another 2 month to get back into shape 100%.

I had a clean fracture and it healed very nice, but if your collarbone is dislocated in any way you should really consider a surgery!! Its just a "keyhole surgery" and it will line up the broken peaces on a nail, its called TEN (titanic elastic nail).
