Problems with Nike Bauer One90 Skates

Recommended Posts

Please add to this list known problems for Nike Bauer One90 Skates. Thanks,

1. Lexan holder prone to cracking resulting in possible broken steel as well - this results in the need for new holders and new steel blades

2. Tendon guard known to break off if pulled on / pushed on by user when taking skates on / off - some report the tendon guard can come off / break off during normal use - however some report this only occurs when pulling / pushing on it.

3. Outsole (outer footbed) separation known to rarely occur after extensive skate use - seems to be an isolated issue as very few users have experienced this problem - something possibly to consider.

Teammate of mine had the exact problem.

Not if you take them off properly. They were designed to flex with your stride.

Nope. I don't know if I agree with it falling off on it's own though. but it's not designed very well and can break off from normal wear and tear.

Yep. I know a guy that skates 5 times a week, takes his off properly, and the tendon guards are still good as new after about a year.

Guys please try to keep this a list of known issues only. I went through and searched many other threads but I wanted to make a short comprehensive list of known issues that are commonplace across all of the skates - was unsure if the outsole coming off or the tendon guard breaking off is more user specific due to a poor job taking care of the skates or it just happens with normal use. While yes, they are discontinued, many can be snatched up right now for low prices and for those here debating between these or the One95s or One75 this would be an excellent comprehensive resource. Thanks.

the issues raised have all been noted previously. no problem is common across "ALL" of the skates, but all are issues which could possibly arise as different people consider "normal use" to mean different things.

the best thing to do if you want to keep the issues localised to one quick reference would be for you to update your original post with all the issues raised in the thread below. so that when something you consider to be relevant is posted and not a repeat etc, it can be added to a list contained in the original post.

I agree with you, many are picking these up now that they are affordable. Yes, they are a great deal right now. Nice deal on a nice skate. Tendon guards are user specific and break from not taking them off properly. Outsole separation has not been widespread, I've only seen 1 or 2 total. However, save yourself some trouble and get the holders swapped out right away. Not only is the holder defective but it leads to steel breakage as well. If you change to LS2's, you'll be OK.

I have been pretty lucky, my One90s never had any issues. My gripe was that there wasn't much steel to begin with so it doesn't take too long before you need new steel (might as well change holders if you get to that point). Another problem (for me) is that there isn't alot of padding inside the skate compared to the Vapor series.

I have also heard of several skates "blowing up" ala Easton SyNergy according to a LHS near me. I've yet to see one first hand though.

The entire fit concept of ONE90 skates was to bring the boot as close to your foot as possible without padding! That is what made baking the skate so important. Also, note that NBH added more padding in the ankle on the Vapor XXXX than the XXX.

I take off my skates properly but they still broke. Maybe it was during the game and someone hit the back of the tendon guard. But it still wasn't my fault and wasn't from taking it off wrong. I've also read some others having the same issue on this board. If it can break just from playing games, it's a design flaw. That's why they changed it back. There were no gains from that tendon guard.

I agree with above. If it doesn't function during a game properly ....the skates shouldn't be on the ice. But I do agree that normal use is different for everyone and it's hard to comare longevity of skates when someone might have 30 games vs 60 games.

hey my holders broke on my one90s so i am replacing them with tuuk lightspeeds. i understand that the LS2 power blades are longer but can you "truely" tell the difference when switching them?

I have prostock one90 skates, they came with the white ls2 holders. the tongue is the same as the xxxx's but black and made with felt. The inside of the skate is also different material than that of a stock one90 skate.

Mine have been great i love them, and if you break the tendon gaurd you're retarded and not careful enough. It's not that hard to take a second and make sure you dont put excessive force on it.

I could. I could feel that there was more steel compared to the 9' profile of the LS2.

Your prostock one90s skates probably have the solid tendon guard. Retail one90 skates flex more and I can see why some people are having issues with them.

big difference. i was on LS2's for years, then LS2 Power for the first season on my one90's. i just switched them to normal LS2's, and i wonder why i didn't do it as soon as i got the skates. obviously the difference in radius comes down to personal preference, but as far as noticing a difference, you certainly will. you'll also feel a difference in the feel of the ice (probably resulting from the slightly more compliant plastic used in the LS2). here's what they look like after some TLC last weekend (new holders, steel, laces, insoles, and a serious cleaning)

Yeah i think my outsole is coming apart from my skates which sucks because i love them. I was thinking of switching to an Easton skate when these finally kick it. Also my tendon guard is falling apart slightly.

well i suppose you're not retarded if they are broken during a game. So far this season mine have not been broken. I guess you just have bad luck.

My pro stock one90 tendon guards appear to be the same as a normal one90 tendon guard from what i can tell.

Well for this season I treated myself with some one95 skates. Luckily my tenon guard broke within the 3 month warranty period, and i got a new pair.. I know NBH they improved the tenon guard on the one95's skates.. but i still don't think it was a vast improvement because i knew of how brittle they were and took really good care of the skates and it still snapped.

my little cousin playing Pee Wee 'AA' with tons of hockey just replaced his Lexan holders + Steel on his one90. Used them extensively for over a year.

as for his tendon guard, no known issues with it. and imo, kids at that age (12-13) generally don't put as much care into their gear. so his one90's have held up great!
