Position Numbers

Recommended Posts

I haven't been playing hockey for long at all, and during some RAT hockey skates people will yell out the number rather then the position name that needs to be filled. What number and positions go together? Thanks for the help guys.

I've been playing my whole life and numbers have never had any correlation with positions that I know of. Except 30 and 31 are usually goalies.

Same with 1, unless some duster thinks a player wearing number one is so cool.

I think the OP is asking about positions on the ice...not number on the jerseys, like in baseball

1 - Pitcher

2 - Catcher

3 - First

4 - Second

etc...

I'm not familiar with that practice in hockey. Maybe a team specific code, so they can quickly decifer voices on the ice?

Yeah that's what I meant. It's not all the time, but someone may come off the ice once in a while and yell a number instead of saying the position they were playing. Maybe it's just a team thing like someone said above. But it has happened on more than one occasion when I'm sure they weren't on the same team.

Sometimes guys will yell how many skaters are coming to the bench for a change. Could that be it?

1 - LW

2 - C

3 - RW

4 - LD

5 - RD

???

Could be a pretty simple system to adopt.

That was my original though of how it worked, makes the most sense. But not sure. I'll have to ask someone the next time they do it.

In the drop-ins I go to, people on the bench don't pay the closest attention to the game

1- first guy onto the bench yells it to let someone know to jump on

2- another guy coming onto the bench, need another guy to jump on (usually D lagging after the rush when no one is looking his way)

and so on

If you yell positions the guys on the bench don't know exactly if you're communicating on the ice or asking for a sub. I usually preface the number with "need", and if I'm on the bench I nudge the guy down the line to make sure we're looking to see who's coming on and off. If you hear a 2 being called and only one guy jumped on, you need to make sure the guy second in line isn't tying his skates or has his helmet off to fix something/cool off.

Positions are usually ascertained by where there's a gap, most guys in pickup don't play a set position or roam. You see an open point in the offensive zone? You're D until you drop down and cycle out. I've played this style as well as set position, and while it's more chaotic, it tends to be a lot more fun until you get someone pissed you were out of position, or you get guys who wont cycle to the point or do anything but sit on the goalie.

If guys randomly jump on and yell 5, I have no clue then.

There are several answers for this:

1: Calling out the number of players headed to the bench,

2: The number of the player (s) you're replacing (ie. I've got 21)

3: The player you're meant to cover, if your team likes to shadow better players (ie. I've got 21)

4: I've got first guy, second guy, third guy, etc

I've never heard of players numbering their position. It seems to over complicate a simple action.

This is what I understand it to be... and it may vary by line/team.

Speaking of line changes...I love skating to the bench and yellign at teh top of my voice (which is quite loud I might add):

"RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT!!!!"

I get to the bench the guy (who isn't paying any attention) goes:

"Where are ya?" Like I hadn't said a word. Then...he jumps on and ends up playign Left anyways.

That's exactly what it is.

You either hear 1 or 2.

I've always been partial to yelling out whatever position you just played. Also, maybe it was just a northern Rhode Island thing when I used to play pickup down there, but does anyone call "Middle" when they mean center?

I do. Response from the bench is usually "what?"

In games I'm partial to the 'one, one' if I'm first off; 'two, two' and so on.

I am a Defenseman so that's what I do as well.

my assistant coach considered all the positions as:

Center: 6

Left Wing: 5

Right wing: 4

Left Defense: 3

Right Defense: 2

and then the goalie is 1.

So when a forward comes off he is trying to get the forwards to say if your a center man yell out 6 to warn the next center and so on. I don't like it so I just stick to saying "One, one" or "Two, two" when going to the bench.

I always found it easiest for the centre to always go out first and play a wing if need be and it usually gets sorted out on the ice eventually when the entire line is out.

Thats how our team runs it... or just hop the boards and take the guy whos playing your position

Our highschool coach used the F1, F2, F3, D1, D2 system for when we were in the defensive zone. Do any teams still use that system, I know alot of pro teams do though.

been playing since i was 7 or 8.. switch off between d-man and wing.. more so wing. i guess i'm more of a defensive minded winger?

always worn the numbers, 7, 9 or 24. i even wore 68 one season because jagr's been one of my favorite players since i was younger.

but if i had to choose a number now.. i'd choose either 7 or 24. because they have significant meaning to me.. born on july 24th.. and it's my grandpha's bday as well.. named after him.. and he never got to see me play.

What does that have to do with the thread?

I picked that one up playing at Mount St. Charles, it's become sub-conscious to me. I didn't even realize I did it until reading your post.
