Hockey Pants...

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

do you have any suggestions for a pant that offers the best protection to date.

Right now I'm playing a handed down Easton Air model that is quite light, but I changed teams and the leage we are in now sports a lot more and harder slapshots than what I was used to before.

Especially when diving in to block a shot it would be nice to wear a pant and maybe shoulder pad that protects the frontside of your body the best you can.

I like to look and reviews of the RBK 9k, but emphasis seems to lie on lightness and agility, it doesn't seem to offer too much for the region above the hip. Am I right there?

Thanks and cheers

Thor

I'd try to find some pro stock CCM/RBK 520SP. They sport a larger back/kidney piece, plus you can add padding to the front where the thigh pads are located.

just my .02 but I have worn Tackla 1000 pants from day 1 (so I have taken lots of shots from falling on my butt, and been hit by plenty of sticks, pucks, boards, ect.) and they have been great for the last few years (yes years not months). Lightweight, lots of zippers, and tons of sizes (even for big guys like me). I have only seen them in black but I love mine...

520s are fantastic pants, can't say enough good things about them. I also had very good luck with my Tackla 9000s.

I'd go pro stock, you won't get better protection than that. If you can't find any pro pants, Vapor XXX are extremely protective, I switched to them from One90's and these have much more coverage. A tad heavier than a normal pant though.

Not all pro pants are very protective.

Yeah my bad, I was just speaking in general, but for the most part pro level pants have more protection, correct?

Not really.

It's personal preference for the pros. I've seen pants that look almost like shells they took so much padding out.

(I'm exageratting a bit there, but you get the point)

I have the CCM 520s and I'd recommend them

Between all the models of pro stock pants I've seen; Bauer 5000, Jofa 7000, Tackla 5000x, CCM/RBK 520, Easton, Nike.

They're pretty much all very similar. The Jofas and Tacklas have two-piece thighs, the rest one-piece. The only ones that are really less protective are the Bauers which have smaller hip and upper thigh protection. ALTHOUGH, with the used pairs I have seen, their have been some mods to them, albeit minor. The most common being the removal of the hamstring foam pad on the tacklas.

I'm a big fan of the split thigh pad, there is no restriction in mobility from day one. One piece thighs can flap a bit when striding.

Agreed, that's why I like my Jofas and Tacklas soo much.

In my opinion, the best pants setup is Bauer uppers and Tackla lowers. The upper thigh pad is a lot less bulky on the Bauers... Just don't like the belt setup. Actually, when I get the smaller size Bauers in a few days, I might just use the upper thigh pad from the Bauers and sew it to the regular Tackla upper... but that's a lot of work.

I have a pair of Graf 700s and I took a shot in the inner thigh when backpedaling..Apparently my movement may have created a gap in coverage, but I had a puck sized bruise for a month. Man...that hurt

Ive been wearing a pair of CCM 892's. Very protective. Taken several shots to the thighs and not felt a thing. Maybe a little bit on the heavier side though, but hasnt been a problem for me coming from the lowest level easton pants.

I'd go with the Easton S-9 or S-17's. Also the CCM Vector 10's or Tackla 5000's or 9000's . All these pants are built like tanks. The Itech 7000's and Mission Fuel 120's are a little more reasonably priced and also very solid pants.

Hijacking just a bit but it didn't seem to be worth creating a new thread:

Can anyone tell me if the RBK 8K pants have a pro-style two-piece setup?

I took a shot in my RBK 5K's just left of my cup area above the thigh pad... there's no padding there so beware. My previous CCM 652 were much more protective in comparison, but a lot heavier and more bulky.

Hi guys,

thanks a lot for your input.

It looks like going pro stock would be a wise descision. I just need to check where to get them and how expensive shipping to Germany will be.

Just a follow up on the 9k remark. Is that pant really so heavily padded, or is it more optimized for agility. From the looks of it it seems to leave quite a gap around the belly and kindney area because is seems to be cut quite low.

Thanks and cheers from Hockey Europe

Thor

mission fuel 110's are great for the $80 price tag.

both movable are solid in the thighs, arse protection isnt perfect but that shouldnt be a issue for your needs.
