Removing and re-attaching holders

Recommended Posts

Since I am not able to be a gear whore, I am looking at doing something to modify what I have. I now skate on the Custom s15's, and they have more black on them than the retail, and I love the all black retro look....as that is what I grew up with. I have all black equipment, and thought it would look great with the black laces and black holders. My question is what is the risk, if any, of removing the holders to dye them, and put them back on. I know a guy (on my league team) in the pro shop who swapped holders on his skates, and he can do it for me for free. If you are just removing the holder and putting that same holdr back on, is there a lot of risk for damage or misalignment? I wouldnt think so because it will be the exact same holes. Any input?

Are you really this nuts? There is no risk. Holders get taken off and put back on all across North America daily in pro shops. Relax, if the guy knows how to rivet, there is nothing to worry about. Buy him a JoeSixpack of his favorite adult beverage for doing this and everything will be A-OK.

No, Im not this nuts....just bored and looking for a project. I asked only because of the nature of the s15 boot and if it is any different. Thanks. I am going to do it.

Question. can you take off the holders yourself without any special tool, or is one required?

Yes. He said that the LHS's in south florida could very easily butcher the rivet job. Initially I asked him about putting on tuuks, and he said it wasnt worth it. I was just hoping putting the same holder back on after dyeing was a no risk and easy job. I know dying my holders in completely unnecessary, but I just want a change.

Huh? Are you sure it was JR who told you that?

If it's the same conversation I remember, JR said (and I will also agree) that S15s are tricky because you need shorter rivets to do the job.

Replacing the same holder is not hard at all. It would be pretty hard for them to misalign the same holder using the same holes. The only real issue is the length of the rivets used. If the shop you are going to has skilled workers then I would not worry about it. If you know of a more reputable shop then I would take it to them and pay the $25 or whatever they charge to have it done correctly.

I just get this feeling in my gut that Murphys Law will rear its ugly head, and that I will need new skates because I wanted black holders! LOL

then don't do it.

I'm sure you can send them off. There are probably shops or members here that will do the job and do it right. Put up a buy ad for skate services if you feel no one in the area can do the job well enough.

Just dye them with the holders on. Dip the skate in the dye up to holders. Even if you spill over a bit, the dye won't do anything to the carbon boot.

Jimmy....not that I dont believe you, but can anyone else verify this?

I did it without removing the holders....

I tried duct tape and some plastic bags over them but the boiling water was too much and it just went right through. Fortunately as jimmy said, it did nothing to the boot.

Because of the carbon make-up of the s15, the sole of the skate is very thin. Just make sure the shop you bring them to has size 6 rivets because that is whats needed. As long as they do, they would have to actually make an effort to screw this up.

Which a LOT of shops don't stock.

Not only that, if you're making new holes, gotta go with a carbide-tip drill bit as other bits can fray the composite really good.

Same holders so no new holes. I will ask about the size 6 rivets. If the LHS doesnt have them, or says something like, "rivets have sizes"?, I obviously wont be doing it. Thanks again for the info guys.

Not only do rivets have diameter sizes they have grip (thickness) range sizes. And rivets are made of different materials, even those materials differ as some are heat treated so harder.

I had a bad experience with thin rivets that came in my kids Vector Pros so was reading up on rivets-many types. Some of the 'off-shore' black rivets are so thin you can roll the side that flanges in your fingertips. My kid missed an away tourney game because holder came loose, when I had skate shop swap out the loose rivets the guy was amazed at the poor rivet quality in Vectors.

CCM didn't even want to see the removed rivets, no offer to cover the cost. Bit of a rant here but don't want you to just find rivets that fit in size but are not sturdy enough to keep the holder on a skate-here's link tood advice I received on rivets:

Before i had Lightspeeds put on my Grafs i found that the Graf rivet type thingys (highly technical term for them) kept coming loose.

For the OP, just make sure they know what they are doing, i had my holders changed in the UK by a fairly rookie shop and boy that kick me the ass. I had 7 rivets come loose on each skate during my Jr A camp...
