NHL player with wood stick

Recommended Posts

I was glancing over hockey pictures and noticed a Hurricane's player with a nice wood stick.

I tried going over the roster to find out who this player but can't find anybody who fits the bill.

The player who I thought may be using a wood stick is Nic Wallen but he shoots left and

no longer uses them. Anyone have an idea who it is ?

Is that the roster from the game where the picture was taken? I know Kaberle was just reactivated, maybe someone was sent down?

A little more digging and the winner is .......

While watching HNIC two weeks ago, a comment was made regarding wooden sticks as about four OPS sticks had been broken in the game broadcast.

The announcer mentioned a current player who uses an OPS for regular play, but switches to the woodie for the penalty kill, because he didn't want to risk the OPS breaking at a key moment in the PK.

I realise this is supervague, but perhaps it prompts someone else's memory.

I'm pretty sure Holik used to use a woodie, not sure if he still does. Here's the best picture I could find but I don't know enough about different sticks to tell what it is.

Yup that looks like wood to me. (you can just insert the Michael Scott line for every single post ion this thread). I remember reading an article in THN before the season (or maybe last season?) about Stastny and it mentioned he was one of the last to use wood sticks, I'm sure there's a handful of guys still just not sure who.

They annoy the crap out of me. I guarantee you they have never used a cohm-poseit stick..as they say...in their lives. So misinformed. Just like Eddie O on versus during the Caps/Isles game. He had the balls to say that Brett Hull used an 82 flex aluminum shaft. I just about wanted to choke him through my television. My wife laughed at me.

If what he said about Ovechkin using an 82 flex stick, however, IS true...that would explain why he went through a six pack of catapults a game and had to switch.

Hmmm, no wonder I couldn't find him. He's not even on the roster anymore.

I wonder if this is a 3 K wood stick ? I would love to give that stick a shot, the blade is longer than others.

Another thing I like is I don't see many strands of graphite on the shaft. Does more graphite make the shaft more stiffer ? Sticks like the Sherwood 9950 are too stiff for me so I am hoping to find more flexible sticks like the Sherwood 7000 model.

I found it interesting that spezza made the switch to a composite stick after using wood for so long.

Spezza has already gotten rid of the OPS and now uses a comp. shaft and wood blade.

Naslund still uses a painted up woodie, too, last I heard.

composite shaft w/wood blade.

sorry someone beat me to it. Add Demitra to the list. I think there have been several topics about this in the past.

I was browsing YouTube, watching videos of stupid high school kids cracking sticks and showing off their new "twigs". One of the kids showed his Vapor XXXX shaft, then said he preferred the Sherwood 5030. His comments included how the puck felt great, was actually pretty light and balanced, puck stuck to the blade, and how if you really want to hurt someone, "there's nothing quite as painful as a chop from a wood stick, getting the ol' two handed lumber on 'em" (or something to that effect). I couldn't help but shake my head....

I think the number of guys in the NHL using wood is in the single digits, or close to it.

Ovechkin was an 85 flex in CCMs, and I assume he is an 87 in NBHs one95s.

A few weeks ago during a Ranger game I believe Micheletti said that Naslund just switched to Composites recently because he finally found one that feels as good as wood.

closer up picture on Rangers website shows that it says supreme one95, just incase anyone was curious.

However for some reason it kind of does look like wood there.
