Winter Classic 3

Recommended Posts

If they have 2 original 6 teams in the next one the NHL brass is a fail. You dont market history, you market excitement.

Who says you can't do both? Pens and Sabres both wore throwback jerseys in their game, as did Chicago and Detroit this year. Both games featured a lot of talent and were good games.

What about a rematch between the Rangers and Kings in Las Vegas

Hah, seeing Gretzky skate on slush was 1 of the most frightening experiences I've ever had to watch. The obvious choice to me is Rangers-Bruins in brand new Yankee Stadium. The outdoor game will be in a US market since that is the point of these games-to market hockey in the US. It does not need to be marketed in Canada, everybody watches so high TV ratings and they sell out. Not the case in the US. Yankee Stadium, Michigan Stadium, Colorado, Fenway Park. I would not mind getting the game away from New Years Day since the college football games dominate. Put it on a day where it only has to go up against basketball and people will watch.

People are watching anyway. An outdoor NHL game is much more entertaining than a watered-down college bowl game.

I agree with this, too bad more NFL stadiums arnt available around this time cause they have the best seating arragements

The people in baseball stadium at first and third base were the closest anyone could sit at any of the outdoor games thus far. It appears as though you go to football stadiums and have everyone be real far away, or you go to baseball stadiums and atleast some people can sit kinda close.

I think the NHL would lean towards a scenic setting more than a large venue, i.e. the KHL all-star game (which, after seeing the first period, I can honestly say is worse than any all-star game I've ever seen).

Although, there might be less revenue for that, since there would be less seating if the game were not in a large stadium.

Would be nice but just doesn't make sense when theres so much revenue in the seats

From NHL.com today...

The new Yankee Stadium, Penn State's football stadium, Washington D.C. and Boston are possible sites for future editions of the Jan. 1 NHL Winter Classic, NHL Chief Operating Officer John Collins told Bloomberg News.

Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, who last year committed state funding to the new hockey arena being built in Pittsburgh, approached NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman about holding a game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers at Penn State University's Beaver Stadium in State College, Pa., Collins said.

Bloomberg News said that city officials in Washington, Detroit, Philadelphia and Minneapolis have also expressed an interest in hosting the NHL Winter Classic.

"Of course, New York would be high on the list," Collins said. "But we also think Boston could be a really special market, and Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Denver, Montreal and Toronto. There are so many different places."

"All of these places are fabulous and we should and will get to all of them," he said. "If I had my way, I'd play all the games outside."

I think atleast for the next few years they should keep it in the cold winter climates. It is still enough of a novelty that they dont need to re kindle interest and hype and whatnot by playing it in the desert as a 'change of pace' or to make it special. It is still, and IMO always will be special enough if played in a cold climate..

Also,

They played theres at night in the KHL..very cool looking too

I heard on the radio this morning that they are even bandying about the idea of Vegas or the Rose Bowl, as well.

Been done in Vegas before (LA/NYR)...could be done again.

IMO - the Phily/Caps matchup is very appealing...but not in vegas

In Philly the football field and ballpark is right across the parking lot from the arena, it makes logistics easier but doesn't have the same appeal to me. Fedex field is on the site of the old cap center if I'm not mistaken and we all know that the Skins won't be busy that late in the season. Or you could do it at Camden yard as a "neutral site".

The Rose Bowl would be really badass, plus it would be hockey to a non-traditional market.

Nah, there's a mall on the Cap Centre lot, I saw it on 95 when I drove down from that horrendous trip to NYC/Philly this October

NHL this AM on XM radio did an interview with Ted Leonsis, and Jaffe said the same exact thing. Ted made specific reference to his proposal to the league arguing the same point :P

80,000 people...Caps/Phily...there is no way one could claim a home field advantage. Phily fans will come in droves for the game. It would be sick. Got my fingers crossed...

Actually FedEx Field is the biggest NFL stadium - 91,000 seats

get some seats on the field without obstructions...and that sucker could easily fit 100K

The Hockey News.com

And much of the reason for that is the success of the Winter Classics the last two seasons in Buffalo and Chicago. The Winter Classic apparently has become something of a hot property and that alone could drive ratings enough to make picking up the NHL a profitable venture for a national network.

Speaking of outdoor games, look for next year’s to be played between the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins at the 69,000-seat Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. The league has come to the conclusion that the outdoor games work much better in a football stadium than a baseball venue and a Montreal-Boston game would be great for ratings on both sides of the border.

The only question I have is that the WC seems geared to raise hockey's popularity (televised poplarity at least for a day) in the United States, so Montreal playing would be an interesting twist...
