Holders & Steel

Recommended Posts

I have been visiting internet hockey stores for the sake of comparing available holders and steel and am blown away by the variety offered. I am likewise fairly confused as to the difference of one over the other and ultimately as to which ones are the best out there. My fault for following the reviews and performance of skates but not of holders and steel. I would love to read reviews on your preferred currently available holders, steel, and reasons why as well.

For those who are wondering, I did do a search on holders but didn't come across a combined topic like this one.

Thanks.

You have to match the holders and steel, at least within the same line. For example, CCM's E and E pros should work fine with each other. But an E-pro blade will not fit in a TUUK holder. So when people talk about the Holder, the steel is included.

Steel quality on the Pitch and the ability to adjust without shaving off steel makes it the best in my book.

the steel is included.

Except with products like StepSteel, after market steel that is advertised as far superior to stock steel. For me I am a LS2 with Perforated steel guy, but I would love to try StepSteel. To the OP, please steer clear of T-Blades!

The Pitch holder/steel really is terrific. Most players don't have the time, resources, experience and/or money to easily adjust the pitch of their skate. The Pitch system really helps those guys make adjustments that they otherwise wouldn't be able to or just wouldn't think to. The steel is, in my opinion, the best "stock" steel available - I would say the stuff is every bit as good as the STEP steel I'm currently using (with LS2s).

I like my LS2s a lot. I've got them in both pairs of my skates and have had no problems at all. They're stiff, responsive, have a very nice feel to them and have held-up well. As for the STEP steel (standard stainless, not the Velocity steel, which I haven't used yet), I'm a pretty big fan. While the Pitch steel matches-up where quality is concerned, the STEP steel gets my nod simply in the fact that there is more of it...that is to say the steel is a bit taller, so there is a bit more life to each blade when you factor in profiling and sharpening.

LS2 holders with step velocity steel has been the best combo for me. it just makes me feel the most comfortable, holds an edge really well, and i feel like i glide farther on the velocity steel than standard steel.

i've actually really started liking the Epro holders with there performance steel. coming off of Razor Bladez, I've grown accustomed to the forward pith that the Epro's have, and now I dont really feel comfortable on things like TUUKs

+1 for the Pitch holders/steel. I've been using them for about 2 years now. They have been absolutely terrific for me. I can't imagine going to any other other holder. The steel is terrific because it seems to hold an edge/sharpening really well, even when skating on crappy outdoor ice every day. The holder has turned out to be more comfortable, durable, and has performed better for me than my last set of holders/skates (Bauers w/Custom+ holders).

Just my .02.

I'm a huge advocate of the CCM E-Pro. I've have the privilege to have skated on nearly every major holder and steel available, including all Tuuk models, RBII, Pitch3s, Cobras and even Thermablades, and have been able to try out Step steel for a few of those holders as well. I always seem to go back to E-Pros, though.

For my second choice, I'd have to +1 with schrempsky on LS2's with Step.

Another vote for the Tuuk Lightspeed 2. Also found the Pitch 3 and the Cobra holders and blades very good as well.

I liked the Tuuk Custom + because the material seems softer and has a little bit of flexabilty compared to Lightspeed Holders....That being said I liked the LS2 holder ( Grey accent ) with LS2 steel on my XXV's - but the skate did not fit too good, so I tried One95's with LS2 holder ( Blue accent ) with LS2.1 steel. The fact is I was used to a 9' profile, but the long LS2.1 has a 11' profile it was hard to get used to. So I bought a pair of Bauer 8000's with LS holder and LS blades. All in all Tuuk Custom + was good, but for speed and manuavbility the LS2 with 9' raduis was best. Thats why when my LS steel breaks - I will prolly replace it with LS2 steel. Cheers

P.S. I know I could of put the LS2 steel in my LS2 holder on my One95's, but I liked the "last" of my Bauer 6500's so much I just had to try the Bauer 8000's.

I've had 3 sharpenings on them so far. I skate on 5/8 except for this latest sharpening I'm now on the fbv 90/75. I've got plenty of steel left. Doesn't appear that much different than after a few sharpenings on my old lsp steel. I've got an extra set of rr's I picked up and had sharpened once. I'll see if I can take a pic of the differences b/w a couple sharpenings

After looking and measuring the steel on my rocket runners there is less than a millimeter difference between each blade. The pair sharpened 2x 5/8 regular sharpening; 1x fbv 90/75 is between 4.5 and 5 mm of actual steel so ~ 4.7mm or so i'd guess (eying it off the gauge ruler i was using). The pair of rr's sharpened 1x at 5/8 regular sharpening has about 5mm of actual steel. So between the sharpenings im hardly losing any steel. I dont really get many burrs or big nicks so i'd guess that accounts for not having more steel taken off in the sharpening process than needed. I dont sharpen myself, but it doesnt appear that my blades are gonna need replaced anytime soon, and i dont know if the fbv allows less steel to be taken off or not (maybe JR or SAK can answer that if it hasnt been already somewhere)

But rotating between the pairs (fbv only from now on) i dont anticipate needing to buy any more runners for a while.

hope this helps

On my CCM Pump Tacks 652 I have a Tuuk Custom+ and I also tried Vapor XXXX with LS.

Can someone tell me what will be different when using an CCC E-Pro? What is the "forward pith" feeling? (I think about moving to Rbk 9k which come with the E-Pro)

I just went from a year-old pair of Synergy 1300c to a pair of Supreme 70s, and I noticed a pretty significant difference in height. The LS2 Power holder is a good .5 cm taller than the Razor Bladez holder, even after factoring the amount of steel that could have been shaved off of the bottom. This height difference was giving me a hard time getting going.

Any tips on getting accustomed to new pitch and/or height?

I have E-Pro's and I have superfeet in them. I realize that I'm on my toes a lot, almost to the point of falling over sometimes. Could this be the superfeet problem or should I shave some steel off the back?
