Warriorsdman 1 Report post Posted February 2, 2009 My coach here in Colorado told our team about this a couple days ago. Apparently he was turning and lost an edge, sending him flying into the boards. Very sad story, really makes you realize how privileged you are to be able to play this great game.http://chicagofury.com/PS- Anyone else interested in trying to get some of those helmet stickers? SidCaeser 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2009 Derek played on my adult inline league last summer. He is a great kid. Real quiet and humble. I've watched him and his brothers play for three years at the rink I work at.

pantherfan 0 Report post Posted February 3, 2009 That sucks, sure makes you realise how much we take for granted. Seems nothings going right for the guy though, so many complications. Here's hoping he makes a full recovery.
greech 4 Report post Posted February 3, 2009 Unfortunately, those kind of complications are par for the course with that kind of injury. It really is too bad, losing an edge is something that happens all so often, its gotta be a one-in-a-billion shot. Poor kid.

HattrickSwayze 3 Report post Posted February 3, 2009 Geez man, that's terrible. I hope the poor kid can make a full recovery. One of the updates said he was able to move his left leg once. Hopefully that's a good sign for him. A few months ago I was browsing through the hockey section at the book store, and there was a book about a guy that had the same thing happen to him. He hit the boards head first and was paralyzed from the neck down. I think the only movement he ended up getting back was one arm. Things like this scare the hell out of me, because it can happen to anyone so easily. Hell I've gotten off balance from shooting and gone head/shoulder first into the boards before with a good amount of speed. I was just lucky enough to have time to shift myself and not get hurt. calishark28 0 Report post Posted February 3, 2009 Wow, this is crazy, I hope he's able to get better, it really does show that the strangest things can happen even in the most normal situations.

Jarick 5 Report post Posted February 3, 2009 That happened to a high school player in MN about ten years ago. He did recover limited use of his legs, although he can't play again (has to use some kind of crutches to walk). I believe he's the reason why they put the stop sign on HS jerseys. KryptOng 9 Report post Posted February 3, 2009 This is a very unfortunate incident, I believe this was during the Silver Stick Tourney held in Ann Arbor which my little cousin played in as well. If that's the case I'm surprised he did not hear about it.I hope he has a speedy recovery from this accident!

The short version ofthe story is this: BU was playing its first game, at home, and was defending NCAA Champ (I forget what year it was exactly) and Roy was a Freshman at BU. 11 Seconds into the game Roy is forechecking, tries to throw a body check on a defensman going back for the puck, loses his balance and hits the boards akwardly breaking his neck. He has been paralyzed, I believe from the neck down, ever since.

LkptTiger 1 Report post Posted February 4, 2009 I think his arms did it to him. He wanted to go for the big one - he was trying to put the guy through the glass. Given the circumstances (first shift as a freshman at BU), the enthusiasm is certainly understandable...but when he extends his arms up and through, he 1) pushes the defenseman away from his own body, losing that support/resistance and 2) stands himself up a bit, which causes him to lose his balance pretty easily. It's an easy mistake to make - which is a little alarming, since plays like that happen dozens of times every night. I think I might throw 3-4 hits like that one in any given game.
starsfan71 9 Report post Posted February 4, 2009 Wow gave me shivers, defiantly going to buy a sticker(if I can get a hold of one) With him being around the same age as me it makes me realize I don't know how long I will get to play so I better put everything into it. (the sticker is my number as well)
