Winter Classic 4

So when do they announce the Team USA roster, or did they all ready do it?

as soon as the game is over they will make announcements...

The way they are doing it is pretty cool. Apparently Tim Thomas will be followed onto the ice with 22 kids each wearing the jerseys of a US Olympian. Nice touch to end the afternoon.

A complaint I had the first two years was the chaotic nature of the area around the rink. It just seemed messy and haphazard. This year looks very put together and professional. They put some work into the production design of the field area.

I think that is where a baseball stadium that is more compact works best. The football stadiums were too large and Wrigley wasn't as compact as Fenway is. The players say the ice is better than in some of the NHL arenas, so, looks like another successful game outdoors for hockey!

except for that faceoff dot! Had to bring out the fire extinguisher, funny to see :D

But this looks great. Nice lil 'intermission' performance going on too! Dennis Leary singing sweet caroline? lol...

As a huge fan of rescue me...who attends a school where we sing Sweet Caroline at every football game (and most parties) that was an awesome moment for me and my friends.

I'm thinking that the network isn't exactly thrilled the game is a 1-0 pitching duel late in the 3rd.

Really liked the way the game went as a whole. It started out a trap fest but slowly but surely opened up and the chances started coming. Especially for the Flyers, they had what five 2 on 1's. The "field" also started to look really cool once you could start seeing the shadows more, that lighting made it feel more like it really was outdoors. More so than with just natural sunlight.

And the hosting curse is broken.

Montreal beat Edmonton

Pittsburgh beat Buffalo

Detroit beat Chicago.

Finally, a home team wins.

Wow, what an awesome finish to the game. It was a little slow through 2 periods but opened up in the 3rd. I kind of want to see a night game now. The game looked awesome under the lights.

My DVR cut out for some reason in the third period. Didn't get to see either of the B's goals.

I was even smart enough to record the show afterward in case of OT. Dammit.

I've got tickets to the BU/BC game next Friday. SO excited, don't care how cold it's supposed to be! :)

Best part was Thomas letting a goal slip past him cuz he was too busy shoving Scott Hartnell. Dumbass! :P

Also I think my new fave commercial is the Geico Caveman driving the Zamboni!

Thats tim thomas for you

Agreed that later in the afternoon the game was enhanced by the change in lighting conditions. The intensity amped up with the final flourish in front of both ends before the GWG.

That's interesting some of them said that, because it seemed quite the opposite while watching the game. I found myself thinking that it's a double-edged sword for the NHL; they get great exposure since there's little else on the dial, but they're not able to showcase their players at their best since the puck wasn't bouncing truly. However, they've been continually improving the game, so the ice and boards should become less of a factor each year.

Nice touch with the announcements for the Olympic team.

Finally, I've seen Tim Thomas pay back players, but I've never seen him react that vehemently. He chose an absolutely stupid time to try to get even; luckily the B's won, or I suspect it would have been a long night for him.

Interesting note on Orr and Clarke; As soon as possible Orr got off the ice, but made sure he gave each guy some encouragement and a pat on ass as they went on the ice. Clarke stayed on the ice and you could just see that he was soaking in as much as he could, wishing he was still playing.

Also, why did Clarke 'win' the ceremonial faceoff? Doesn't it always go to the home team?

I mentioned that to my wife.

Clarke was tapping players' shins in the beginning then he reverted to just standing there.

i was guessing they must've had a coin flip and clarke won - but i thought it was strange as well since the home team pretty much always wins the faceoffs from the games i have seen

It was exciting to be there, but I couldn't see anything lol. Fenway is a terrible place for a hockey game. IMO they should have the winter classic at football stadiums like the first winter classic. Of course it might possibly conflict with nfl playoffs...........

Thats why they don't want use NFL stadiums any more, their setup window is too small. Fenway is setting the example, having the ice out for a couple weeks and having college and high school games out there as well. However I agree, I think once they make the rounds of the better MLB stadiums, they should go to some of the "cathedrals" of college football, in particular Michigan Stadium (110,000+ seats) the horseshoe, Beaver Stadium, pretty much the big ten stadiums and have great views in the higher seats. Michigan and Michigan State played outdoors a few years back (the Cold War_ at Spartan stadium, and still holds the attendance record for a hockey game at 77,000+, but I know the Wolverine faithful would love to steal their thunder with a Red Wings vs. Blues game at the Big House, along with the Second cold war.

KPD said in today's Globe that the NHL originally talked to the Pats about using Gillette Stadium, but the issue of NFL playoffs obviously came up. However, he said the concept was well received by the Krafts, so don't be surprised if an outdoor game shows up there one day outside of New Year's.
