Tongue Flop

Recommended Posts

Sorry guys, I know this has probably been posted about 1000 times before but when I searched I couldn't find anything that answered my question.

I just got my Vapor XXXX's from my LHS the other day and I noticed that it is a very stiff boot, I know that tongue flop makes it a bit looser and it looks sweet haha. I would like to know what some methods to make your tongue flop are, right now I have them unlaced down to the 4th eyelet and I have them folded over and taped down. Will this help me out ?

Hey man, probably an even more basic question: Why do so many people like to have their tongues flopped over?

Do you feel like you have more mobility while skating with it folded down?

I ask myself the same question every time I see a ridiculous comment about flopped tongues. I think it looks retarded, always have, probably always will.

Someone decided it was cool, others followed suit.

Borje Salming I believe in the originator of the Flop.

Which I think can look good on some and idiotic on others.

Yeah I won't get into a who started the flop debate. Don't do it, don't care to.

Guys on my team who were pros in Euro in the 80's said everyone started flopping big because of Salming

guys, can we please get back to the question ? haha

You asked "right now I have them unlaced down to the 4th eyelet and I have them folded over and taped down. Will this help me out"

Why dont you just wait and find out if it makes the tongues flop? Or now that they have been tied for a while un fold them and find out what happened? Seems like a silly question. Do you want to know how to properly flop?

I read that water will help a tongue flop, but personally i think it looks really dumb, i skate tongues tucked under my shins.

Or you could go to PHEW haha they would prolly have there own ways

My Vapor tongues are really, really stiff, and I could never get them to flop. I ended up preferring them in the tongues. If I had way more time and money and wanted to experiment, I'd try a pair of white felt tongues and have them installed.

I'd imagine ironing or steaming them while flopped over would probably help put a nice big crease in your tongues, just like a pair of pants, shirt, baseball cap, etc... I take no responsibility for what that does however. Being the loser that I am, I tuck them under my shin pad and then proceed to pull my socks down over the tongue, tendon guard, and most of the heel. see Malkin, and Kovalchuk.

Aye, I did it for my roller set. unlaced about 3-4 eyelets, folded the tongues over, wrapped laces around them tight. Left for a day or two. Used them, did it again. In a week they were doing it permanently from then on.

Good luck flopping vapor tongues. I'd say your best bet if you wanna flop is throw out the tongues and get some big white felt ones. I tried to flip my 30's, woudnt work. Fopped my 9k's n they looked/felt awful .. heres my skates now :

Graf toungues woud be a perfect addition however

Also, I don't flop because of the way it looks really, it started because i always wore my tongues out but not flopped, eventually when I got high end shin pads they were too bulky for my tongues to go outside so I decided flopping would be the best way to go about it. I like the way it looks, but I mostly do it for fee.

With my vapors, I would think it is impossible to do it because of the hard plastic in the tongue. Plus, I never would flop anyways, I think it looks silly. My tongues are under my shin pads.

On a side note - I really like the look of the white 9K RBKs in Leafsrule's pic. Not the big tongues, just the skate itself. I had a pair of those on (2 or 3 times) when I was buying my new skates this spring, but ended up the XXIX. The lace lock is a great concept! The fit felt good, but I still did the vapors. Not that I don't like them. To me they are a looser fit than the RBKs, and I have had the best luck throughout the years with Bauer skates. The price was the same too.

I understand what you mean but, I fidnt hat if I don't put my tongues out over my shin pads then they rub my legs and that isn't fun however, I find that it looks REALLY crazy if they're out but not flopped ( even crazier then when they are flopped). If I were to get a new pair of tongues would I just bring them to a shoemaker to get the new ones put in ?

Most hockey shops wouldn't be able to do this. Your best bet is a shoe shop.

I dont see why they couldn't. My mom even did a decent enough job on them for me to wear that day and shes not even a seamstress or anything. Its not really very hard at all, my shop told me that it took the guy out back no time to do it and most of the wait associated is just the fact that theres other stuff to be done.
