There was a Phillies fan that did the same thing after they won the World Series last year.

He has done it for other sports as well...I remember reading the article and he had essentially made it a job.

Wow. That's like cheating to win the cup lol. As good as that might have been for him, it will still never compare to the feeling of actually lifting the cup after a grueling season.

Kinda pisses me off. The Cup is supposed to be the Holy Grail of hockey, the greatest prize for the greatest accomplishment. This guy didn't do jack shit and yet he's going crazy with it. What happened to the superstition of never touching the Cup until you win it?

would have grabbed a couple of sticks and stuff on the way if that was me...but i definitely wouldn't have raised and kissed the cup, i mean i didn't win/deserve it, but i guess it doesn't to have this one guy sneak in unless he's a mass murderer or rapist or something, somehow i feel like you just can't stop that

I dont see any reason to get mad. It may be a tradition but what harm did it cause? Theres a man now who will never forget that night and at what cost? Nothing. If the family could do it, then why not him? I say if he was smart enough to sneak in and not make an idiot of himself, then who cares? People take this Stanley Cup stuff way too far, its not as if this one guy touching it is going to curse the Penguins forever or anything.

if anything, it goes to show you how ecstatic the players and executives were to win... no one in the room seemed to care that this guy was an imposter, no one questioned his attendance. it's a celebration and if they were willing to share it with the guy, good on him for having the balls to go for it!

What tradition? hes a 33 year old man, hes not playing pro hockey, hes not getting a contract anytime soon, the tradition is if you touch it, you'll never win it, so are you saying hes never winning a cup? Theres a good chance of that I am guessing.

Tradition? Perhaps for an NHL player. But those unspoken rules dont apply to the average joe, nor should they. Hundreds to thousands of people touch the cup every year. I thouched it in Tampa when it was in a hotel bar after being displayed on the beach at a cup party that summer. I was at the hotel bar after a wedding, and there it was, sitting in a corner with the cup keeper guy completely blitzed. I could have jerked off in the cup.... and he was so toasted he wouldnt have cared. Got a ton of pictures with it.

Get all the pictures you like at a party or the HOF but if you didn't win it then you don't touch it. Sure, Joe not much of a hockey guy wouldn't know that but someone who is a big fan or has played this game should know better.

I played hockey growing up, and have been involved for over a year again recently. I have never heard of such a tradition. You arent allowed to touch it? Thats silly. All the NHL'ers who get the cup for a day let tons of people touch it.....hell they throw it in a pool and eat ice cream out of it. Arent these the people who "should know better"? I think you should be respectful and get permission, but if it is allowed, I see no problem with it whatsoever. It is a trophy, not the original Constitution. JMO of course.

There's a difference there though: they can do what they want with it because they won it. The tradition is the honor that you don't touch it until you win it. If you don't win it, you never get to touch it. That's why it is the most coveted trophy in all of sports.

But hey, like Chadd said, if you want to touch it for no reason, I guess you're entitled to it.

IF you were/are a NHLer and you never won it, the belief was that you didn't earn the right to touch it until you won it. There was a story in which Kirk Muller was at a softball game and the Cup was there and he said that he didn't even go near it so that he didn't jinx himself, and it kinda grew legs from there.

The reason why none of the hockey playing fans touch it is because they still think they have a shot at it. LOL

When I met one of the Keepers of the Cup a couple of years back, they're saying that as a fan you can touch it, but that lifting it over your head is reserved for winners.

It goes beyond the "touch it/never win it" tradition. Christ - I'm 20 years old and now I'm probably going to have to bust my ass for the next few years to get as far as I can. If I'm lucky, I can get a few more years of good competitive hockey in before I have to acknowledge the fact that the dream is over and that I'll have to move on with my life...at which point in time I'll get a real job and play beer league hockey 4-5 nights a week.

In all likelihood, I'm not going to get a whiff of the NHL and will thus never have an opportunity to win it (which is a reality that turns my stomach every time I think about it), but I wouldn't dream of touching The Cup, nevermind lift it or drink from it.

Touching The Cup is an honor and a privilige...something to be EARNED. Next time you think about touching The Cup, stop and think about all the men who have earned the right to call themselves Stanley Cup Champions. Think about the wars that have been fought over that trophy. Think about the legendary players who have lifted it...and the legendary players who never got to.

I would imagine that the real experience of lifting The Cup is in the fact that holding that big silver bastard over your head is the culmination of everything you've done for and given to the game. It's your childhood dream come true and everything that you've ever wanted come to life. It's something every hockey player has done in his head hundreds of thousands of times since he first grabbed a hockey stick. It's not just a trophy - it's a badge of honor and the verification of years and years and years of hard work and dedication. Hell, I get get kinda shaky just thinking about realizing that kind of accomplishment.

Unless you've actually won it, all of that would all be lost on you. You might as well be lifting one of your mother's vases over your head.
