First time sharpening, what hollow should I ask for?

Recommended Posts

I'll be taking my new skates (CCM U+ 09 I received as warranty replacements) to Zwickers to get baked and sharpened. I've never requested a hollow so I'm guessing that I've always gotten 1/2" in the past. I'm 5' 5", 140 lbs, 38 yo, and a relatively aggressive skater (getting back into hockey after a 20 year hiatus). I'd like to get a little more glide so I'm considering requesting a 5/8" hollow. What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Down here normal house cut is 7/8".

Do they resurface the ice with a Slurpee machine? damn. No doubt many skaters would do alright with a 7/8 hollow, but for the average skater that's pretty shallow.

1/2-5/8 depending on the ice. I'd also try and find out what settings your usual LHS was using and judge from there.

Most of the standard hollows in the ATL area are 1/2". I personally use a 5/8" since I'm a fatass, a productive fatass but fat though... 5'9'' 220ish my optimal weight is 185-195.

Rink at home where I work, All rentals are done at 5/8, if you get them done without specifying a hollow you'll get that, 1/2,or whatever the hell the wheel is on.

Learn what you have, and specify.

Zwickers normally won't do 5/8's. Wayne will if he's there. You posted in another topic that you needed to get your skates baked. If you were to go to No Icing Sports you could also get the FBV sharpening as well. No Icing also will do whatever conventional hollow you want if you're not interested in the FBV setup.

They pretty much do resurface the ice with a slurpee machine. We have 3 rinks with even acceptable ice to anyone outside of Texas.

Why the hell not? That's a pretty normal hollow, and it's just as easy to dress the wheel at 5/8 as any other hollow...

what are their requirements for them to do a 5/8? that's just weird. I don't understand any shop that won't do what the customer asks.

Zwickers does a "Regular" sharpening which is 1/2" and a "Deep" sharpening that is 3/8". If you want something else you would have to go on very off-peak hours and already have a good relationship with Wayne to even make the request. Whether he'll do it, I couldn't say.

Does he inspect every players skating ability? That's just ridiculous. There's a reason you can adjust the hollow.

Blackstone should follow their lead and cut down their spinners to just 1/2" and 3/8"

I don't write it, I just report it. They probably don't offer more because of the volume that they deal with and they may not feel the need to. With Saturday waits of at least an hour, they aren't exactly losing much business.

There are plenty of rinks and proshops that will just put their standard 3/8 or whatever hollow they use on every pair of skates that comes through...regardless of what you request.

Well, cost wise it makes some sense. Have two wheels dressed, and you only have to redress them on rare occasions, saving you money on wheels.

Still seems like they should be able to accommodate special requests though, and just leave them on those settings for people who don't care. God knows there are enough of those.

Hijacking the thread for a quick question. My roommate gets the standard sharpening, and insists he likes his skates dull and that he won't feel good on his skates for 3 or 4 hard skates after the sharpening. He usually goes a long time between sharpenings for this reason. Would going to a shallower hollow immediately put his skates where he'd like them, or am I misunderstanding the process?

Yes, if he's on 1/2" have him try 5/8"
