Another Freak Skate Accident

Recommended Posts

Wow, sure hope he pulls through. I have an Itech 1pc undergarment that has a Kevlar neck guard and wrist guards as part of it. The neck guard doesn't go up real high but it's better than nothing. And I don't even notice it's there, ever. I'm pretty anal and wear a full cage too. I'd rather be able to work the next day than have hospital time. Prayers for the ref.

Mr. Brown's in my prayers. This is exactly why I wear a Maltese gel neck guard/combo in goal, and just bought a Maltese collar to skate out in. I highly recommend them. Freak accidents happen, and while some might call me anal for wearing a neck guard for drop in games or stick and puck, I don't have the luxury of trainers and medical staff waiting rink side to take me to the hospital.

Read about this earlier today - my best wishes to the official. Once again one must ask, do they really need fighting in Junior C hockey? or Junior's at all for that matter? I understand why its part of the pro game, but not below that.

When Richard Zednick had his accident, the next day I bought one of these:

and I haven't been on the ice without it since. I don't notice it, it doesn't bother me at all, and I'm thinking I'm going to pick up the longsleeve one to add to the rotation, so to speak.

Very scary... I've watched those skates fly past awful close.... have even gotten hit in the side of the helmet and the shield.... And this was in college and amatuer games where fighting was NOT PERMITTED. That could have been a factor 'cuz they had no clue and were just tangling and wailing away...

I may just get one of those shirts just to check them out...

I usually used to just let them get it out of their system before I got too close, assuming they were both willing combatants, for exactly this reason. It just isn't worth risking injury to stop a couple of meatheads when they're flailing around.

I just wish parents understood this. Can't stand getting ripped into by coaches and fans for not breaking up a fight right away. We (at least in the clinics I've attended) have been instructed to only intervene when it is safe to do so. Obviously if things are getting out of hand we'll do our best but everyone needs to keep in my how little protection referee's have. I once went berserk on a mom while watching my brothers game because she lost in on some 14 yr old ref for not breaking up the fight that was right beside him. Because she was too concerned that these little peewee players (who couldn't hurt a fly if they tried) were gonna kill each other.

I appreciate Hockey Canada's efforts to stop abuse of officials, but I would to see something go out regarding the overall protection of ref's. As funny as it is to see a 17 yr old run into me and fall down because he didn't see me, the verbal abuse after it along with the constant barrage of pucks seems to be getting worse over the years. Seems a lot of respect is being lost.

*Don't get me wrong, I understand we should not interfere with the play, but when there is no one checking you and you wind up a slapper directly at a linesman 30 feet away, only to scream and yell at him for stopping your puck, that's taking it a little too far and something I'd like to see stop.

Guys, I TEACH the seminars..... Yes, you intervene - with your partner - when it's safe if they're already going at it. But in many cases you can get in between before they start - while they're jawing and shoving and maybe you prevent the fight... more often as a linesman in a 3 man system when they get going behind play. You make your presence between them and maybe talk them out of taking dumb penalties.

In the series of Pics, it looks like the players had locked up and the opportunity was there to go in and seperate them. As the officials were approaching to go in it looks like the players circled a little and one player pulled forward and down taking the other player forward off ballance - sending a skate straight up. I have seen this too many times....

Definitely agree with you on the lack of respect and abuse. The thing is, we are our own worst enemy.... use the rules book... Coach gives you a ration...bench him, he keeps going then game him. Player tells you to "get the f$$$ out of the way"... dime him.... No profanity... give him a deuce for unsportsmanlike.... did he intentionally shoot the puck AT YOU rather than in your vicinity? ..... Match penalty. Player pushes you and says"get the F*** out of the way" or just pushes you out of the way... Game Misc.... You'll always here me telling them to pick up their head or look where they're shooting it.... What is the highest level game you've worked? As the players get better the heads tend to be up and aware of where you are. At least they are looking and might have better control of where they send it.

As for "going berserk" on that mom, it is very hard to maintain and sometimes folks need a "corrective interview". Sometimes you can get them into a calm discussion and actually explain the rules and procedures to them. As for the kid not diving in and he going nuts... I had a parent bring up at a hearing once that I just stood there looking around while my partner was in a pile of four players and there were four other fights\wrestling matches going on.... and that I went to help my partner insted of diving into the one right in front of me. The video clearly showed that I had the riot pad out, took down the numbers and then worked with my partner (and two other officials that had just completed their game and were standing outside the glass watching the end of our game).

As for stopping the puck.... I had a coach yell at me about that... ONCE. My reply was, "coach, I am wide by huge out here (at 6'7" on skates and 275#) and it's quite hard to miss seeing me standing on the blue line where every linesman has stood for about the last 100 years. Tell your defenseman to pick his head up and look where he's shooting the puck and I'll do my best to avoid the puck."

FWIW, Bauer has re-designed the old Itech shirt with the built in neck collar for 2010. The shirt will not be available until late Spring. I did see a sample and it looks and most importantly, feels excellent. I would wear it now if it was available.

I agree with everything other than trying to get between them to "prevent" the fight. I saw an interview with Paul Stewart ( I believe) and he made an excellent point, if you rush to get between two guys that are jawing or pushing, they are going to do it all game long. You're going to be worn out and increase the odds of being injured exponentially. If you give them a few seconds, one (or both) of them will go too far and get an extra penalty or they will back down.

I always try to talk guys down off the ledge when they're in those situations, but to quote a moderately famous comedian "you can't fix stupid."

My favorite line that always seemed to work was, "Next shot gets two." Worked like a charm. If guys decide to go then you wait until they either hit the ice or are down to holding on. Plus, if they are going then you should stay far enough away to avoid being collateral damage until it is time to get in.

I've actually had a skate blade brush the side of my neck going for a puck with a guy who went ass over teakettle. Didn't leave a mark, but a 1/4" to the side and I might not be here today.

Great points here, and it is true that we have to use the tools we are given to protect ourselves - hence enforcing the rules. It is always best if we can get down there to intervene before anything errupts, but it just doesn't always happen. As for heads up, the majority of the games I do are 15-17 yr old A players. I talk more than any other official I've worked with, always yelling "head up", "take a look" and other hints that they should be looking where they are going/shooting the puck.

And perhaps "going berserk" was an overstatement, but it is true that the biggest problem is a misunderstanding of the rules and as officials we should do our best to calmly inform them of what the rules are.

Glad to hear Kevin is in stable condition. Those pictures are horrifying to look at.

Remember I said as a liney in a 3 man... getting between them is part of your job. The Bands needs to step up and put a stop to the BS, liney's do what they can to prevent or postpone it.... I also recall Stewie telling two players to cut the shit and fight already or he'd kick their ass himself because he was sick of them dicking around and wasting his liney's time.... I've told players to just go ahead and fight and quit wasitng my time.... the rest of us would like to play some hockey. If they are determined to go, they'll they go no matter what you say or do.... If they're jawing, pushing, etc. than you gotta use yer judgement on how much or if\when to intervene. Like I said, I'm wide x huge and for the most part once I assert my presence they seperate and move on. If you're a foot shorter and 100 pounds lighter you may not be able to be as "insistent" that they get back into play.

If you can get between them before the festivities, I'm all for it and did it regularly myself. My point is that if they were both willing or posturing, I'm not letting one of them hide behind me all night long.

We're getting way off topic here by the way.
