Your Best Hockey Moment?

Recommended Posts

I didn't find this in a search, so I figured this would be a good place to re-live your best hockey moment.

For me it'd have to be a couple seasons ago, semi-finals we're going to a shootout. I'm the first shooter, and one of their guys goes over to their goalie and tells him that I'll shoot glove high. I end up coming in and snapping one glove high. It turned out to be the only goal of the shootout, and we ended up winning in the finals as well.

So what are your best hockey moments? Your first goal as a 5 year old? The bomb from the point to win your beer league? Share away.

For ice, it's hard to say, I haven't been playing that long and my team is inconsistent, so I haven't had a really great moment.

In ball hockey, I've got a couple.

-Winning the B-side championships in our first year with a bunch of guys who had never played hockey before, coming back from a 5-2 deficit in the 3rd, putting in one of the goals my self and sealing it with the empty netter. Nobody cared, because it was the B-side and it meant nothing, but it was awesome for our group of guys.

-Taking a faceoff, putting it through my opponents legs, dekeing out two defencemen, getting tripped and roofing a goal while flying through the air from an awful angle. Then doing almost the exact same thing after the next face off. Probably my favourite as I have awful, awful hands.

And not quite a "moment," but I'm a teacher, and one day we had the opportunity to rent out the community rink and play a game of shinny with a bunch of kids from our school and our school hockey team for a day. Coming off a shift, I look to my co-worker and laugh, "Hey, we're getting paid for this...how does it feel to turn pro?" A tiny moment of glory :)

My hockey career has been unexciting, to say the least :D

last tournament I played in HS varsity. coach takes away my A before the game, for pretty much no reason. needless to say I was pissed.

the game stays 0-0 until the middle of the 3rd period, when we get a 5 on 3 PP. faceoff at their left faceoff dot and centerman wins it right back to me (I played LW). I take a stride toward the middle and wrister it short side over the goalie's pad. last shift of the match we're killing a penalty, coach puts me on the ice to kill it (I never play on the PK). I get the puck at my blueline and shoot it down the ice for another goal. I win player of the match and get booed off the ice (because we just shut out the local team 2-0). best hockey memory ever.

A few seasons back I was in a really physical game. The team played very dirty with people taking runs at me and I even get a few whacks and punches from the goalie. With about 3 mins left in a tied game, I redirected a slap shot past the sh*t-talking goalie, and we went on to win. It was the best revenge.

Back in high school when I had my first 4 goal game against a top team in an important game was big too. It was cool because that league printed game summaries in the newspaper.

I had an idea for this very topic, but looks like I was beat to it. I was inspired because I remembered this moment I had:

When I was a Bantam (I think), I played for a house league and there were two teams out of the same rink. We played each other in the last game of the season (I don't think we made it to the playoffs that year). Everybody knew most everybody else so it was a huge deal in terms of bragging rights. It was a really tight game, and it was 0-0 very late in the third. This was back when I was actually pretty good so I was out on the ice in the last minute, still tied 0-0. I carried the puck down the boards on my off wing all the way down to right behind the net. However, right before I was fully behind the net I passed the puck in front of the net to a teammate and he buried it. I had seen guys like Mario and Gretzky do that move, and it worked out so perfectly because the defenders and the goalie both followed me thinking I still had the puck. The goal was scored with 8 seconds left in the game, and we won 1-0.

I've always found it funny that my crowning moment as a hockey player was an assist, but I've always thought I was the one who created the play, so I should get the credit . I've actually talked the guy who scored years later and he didn't even remember it.

Honorable mention goes to my senior year in HS, I had a linemate I had played with my whole HS career, so we had pretty good chemistry on the ice. One game we were coming down on a two-on-one, but the defender tried to check him at the line, missed, but my linemate lost his stick in the process. He kicked a perfect pass to me and I deked the goalie and put it in the net. Greatest goal I've ever scored (most are very ugly garbage goals).

During the lockout, months after the Lightning won the cup... being on the ice with four of the Lightning players. The best part of that experience was that the lockout itself(this was just before they officially canceled the season) was kind of depressing, especially after the joy of the Lightning winning the cup.

My first year of midget major hockey, we had an incredible season, which was strange because I always seemed to have bad luck when it came to ice hockey teams. One of the last games was being hyped to no end, my team (Hollydell Hurricanes) vs. the Atlantic City Sharks, who were the first place team in he NJYHL. The winner of the game was going to be the team to go to Districts. We both hated each other's guts. The atmosphere of the game was like a Game 7 Stanley Cup Finals feel. We had intros, music blaring, skated out in smoke to the rink, and the most fans we've ever played from. Hell they had police there as well. Turned out we needed them, because this happened during the game.

Althought we lost a close game, and I didn't play that much during the game, it was an amazing experience. I loved it. I never had the experience of playing high school hockey so this was the closest I could get.

Tier II Atlantic District Championships- one weekend of round robin then top two teams advance to a best of three series. My team (Red Bank Generals) against a team we tied twice in the regular season, the Ramapo Saints. Split first two games, best player on the saints pushed the ref after a bit of a scrum and got tossed... hello nationals

Probably the '96 Tier 1 Bantam Nationals. We had been to the National Semis the previous year, we get into the semi's through a back door tie-breaker and lost to Compuware pretty badly. This year we run through the round-robin part undefeated and get Compuware again in the semis. I scored to tie the game at 2 late in the second and assisted on the GWG early in the third. Unfortunately we lost the Finals later in the day,, but playing for a national championship was a great experience.

Two come to mind. I only play pick up and am somewhat limited talent wise, mainly because of my lack of speed. I'm usually a good passer though.

1st one - I get the puck behind the net and skate a few strides when I see my rw speeding up along the board. There are 3 players between me and him. I skate a couple more strides and just fire the puck up towards the blue line where it meets the board. The puck is off about an inch of each of the three other team players and lands right on the tape of my winger. He ends up on a breakaway but doesn't score. My teamates are going apeshit that he didn't score on such a pass lol

2nd one - As I'm cutting accross the redline, I pick the puck off as it's coming off the boards then cut right in the middle as I cross the blue line, with my head down I stickhandle and split the D and lift my head up with just enough time to pick a spot and shoot the puck blocker side and it just deflects on the inside of the post and in.

I usually play D and don't score many goals anymore so when I score I tend to remember them lol

I managed to get the High Scorer award at Narch Rec nationals wayyy back when in Las Vegas. Got a cool plaque and a nice new pair of Bilt Rite gloves when they first came out. That was neat.

Hah, I live 15 minutes from AC and I go to that rink :P Once I get better at skating hopefully I will be able to try-out for a team though

1990 Tier 1 Bantam Nationals in 2005. Haven't had an experience like that since then.

Winning the State Class A championship in OT my senior year was probably the greatest thrill. Guys from that team/town always seemed to beat us in the finals every year, even in youth hockey. That made it extra special.

Other memories that are right up there are making Div1 team when I didn't expect to and getting into my first game (unfortunately, there weren't too many more!).

Won a Junior game 6-5 with 8 players

and

Were losing 5-1 at the beginning of the 3rd period. I already scored the first goal and within 10 min I was able to net another 3 to bring the score 5-4. With :16 left my friend Dave scores to tie the game. I tell him to just win the draw and kill the time for OT. Well, he wins it but instinct tells me to skate up and cross their blue line. With only 1 Dman between me and the goalie i skate across the blue line, get the pass step in the blue line and take a wrister far side of the goalies shoulder with :06 left, won the game, and had 5 goals.

My second Bantam year, my association created an 'A' team, that was a tournament-only team. We played Shattuck St. Marys' Tier 2 AA team 3 games at home. Lost the first game 6-2, came back 6 hours later, and won 6-2. It was only their 4th loss of the season. It will always be my most memorable hockey game.

Scoring two goals in one game (I'm a defenseman, so scoring is somewhat rare). The best part was that it was an away game, and the home team's student section was on me all night, until I scored that second goal.

Overtime game winner against our high school rivals. Also happened to be my first ever goal after being called up to Varsity. I had never been swarmed after scoring a goal before it was truly awesome.

Winning state, 3rd times a charm. 3 times we made it there and played the same team each time. Finally my first year midget minor we were ranked 3rd in the nation and we won 3-1 I had a goal and an assist. Not to shabby for a Defenseman. Although, my worst hockey moment happened in regionals shortly after. Hit the post from the point with 15 seconds to go, that goal would have put us into nattys.

Other than that, my other favorite moment was my senior year when I double rostered with my midget team and played center for my highschool. We played a north side Chicago team in their senior night, high school hockey is generally better up there than the south side where I am from. Anyways, I had 5 goals that game, stands were packed and I had people heckling me and screaming the whole game we ended up winning 5-4. The game winner we were short handed and one of our guys dumped it in and their goalie slowly played the puck behind the net, I flew up the boards got around the net lifted his sick picked up the puck and put it in. The crowd was freaking out. Walking out of the rink and into the lobby with all of their fans their was an experience I will never forget.

Tied score in a meaningless league game with a lot of respect between the teams, but no quarter being given or expected. I move to the high slot as the point shot is being teed up to try to screen the goalie. The point man whiffs on the shot, sending a worm burner in the general direction of the net. With one hand on the stick, I manage to reach past the d pushing me out of the slot, and get my stick in the path of the shot. I feel a jolt on my stick, and the shot deflects over the goalie's shoulder, off the bar in the top right corner and in, capping a hat trick and winning the game.
