NBC Games

Recommended Posts

Weekend games on NBC would be great, if I didn't have to listen to "Doc" and the rest of the brutal crew. My god they are brutal, and like nails on the chalkboard!!!

Ya know what bugs me...not just NBC...but all hockey announcers: The 'slang' terms that are being used during broadcasts.

snipe

dangle

swag

....whatever. Those aren't proper terms for things...I think they should be held to a better standard of language to call the games. Quit trying to sound cool. Let the kids on facebook talk about their "sick swag" and "filthy dirt" and "toed it up to go bar down"...and whatever the hell else they say. Stuff like that coming from Doc, or Jim Hughson or Darren Pang is just silly. I think the TSN guys have stayed away from it...Gord Miller and Chris Cuthbert are pretty damn good...and if they do use it...they qualify it as "what do the kids say?" kind of thing. Which, at the very least is showing an interest in connecting to the audience while realizing it's not proper calls.

completely agree. CBC old time announcers are the best to listen to around here. luckily in Detroit, i get CBC.

can't stand when Doc calls the goal/net a cage.

there needs to be a term for these types of announcers.... kind of like the unattractive radio announcers have "a face for radio"

NBC/Versus announcers have "enter your comments here"

I disagree on Doc. While I loved the old pairing of Gary Thorne and Bill Clement on ESPN, we don't have that luxury anymore. As someone who can't control what type of cable they get, I'm bound by local team and NBC games. I'll take Doc over most chuckleheads I've heard announcing games. I think I'd like Doc more if he didn't have this hybrid old school/ new school slang style (the "cage" thing bothers me...), but he's got most others beat. The guy really is a student of the game, does a ton of research, and knows his stuff. I love that he knows the NCAA or Junior team of all the guys, and is able to make connections as a result- something I've only heard on CBC as well.

As for the rest of the NBC crew... I can't stand McGuire and mike milbury. The Winter Olympics 4 years ago had Davidson and Doc- one of the best pairings I've ever heard.

The beef I have with Doc is the strange way he structures his sentences. He makes the most odd connections, and does annoying things like saying so and so "finessed" the puck forward, and things like calling it a cage. He also pulls boneheaded mistakes regularly, like in the Stanley Cup he said "Zetterberg, guarded closely by his countrymen Gonchar" and things like that. Plus the Ovechkin and Crosby worship is off the charts.

ok, its official, i hate pierre mcguire

Has he ever NOT said a game had a playoff atmosphere, at least the Sunday Game of the Week on NBC? I'm pretty sure he's said it everytime I've watched NBC.

This is a great game though.

According to NBC the NHL only has teams in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Washington and Philly. It's a 4 team league and the rest of the teams don't matter. No better way to make the sport more popular to the US than to show 4 or 5 different markets week in and week out.

If that is what we are going to get, I am all for Caps vs Pens every Sunday afternoon.... screw football. Hope the numbers were good on this game as it was a great showcase of the two best players in the league and two of the most exciting teams. Bet NBC is glad the game was played... I know I was

Doc Emrick I can stand, although he's not my favorite. I can't stand Pierre Mcquire though. He's so aggravating, and just such a deusch. My favorite is Bob Cole. Just don't think you can beat a Habs Original 6 match-up with Bob Cole calling it. I like the guy that does the Rangers games on MSG as well, but I can't remember his name. There are quite a few guys I like to listen to, but Bob Cole is number 1. He seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it personality though.

The most frustrating part of NBC's broadcast is how they tool it up as strictly Ovechkin vs. Crosby. There's no mention of the team element whatsoever. Even when they were showing their head-to-head stats, it says in the bottom "Crosby won in the playoffs in 7 games." No NBC, the PENGUINS won in 7 games, not Crosby.

EDIT: On the topic of guys I hate, get Glen Healy off CBC. He's an idiot. Can't stand listening to him.

Emerick is the Devils regular announcer so thats enough of a reason to hate him. The Msg Ranger guy is Sam Rosen. He also does some football but to me he"ll always be the man because he screamed "the waiting is over!!!" in '94

you got that right he he annoys the hell out of me, i just don't like the way he just talks, like he's going no where/not interested/super long sentances that don't match the play etc. etc., i like most TSN announcers i don't mind the msg guy too but i only get him on highlights

Doc tends to go off on his historical references from time to time. I can forgive most of his stuff as long as he has a good color guy, being paired with Pierre seems to bring out the worst in anyone. I was getting annoyed that they never bothered reporting most of the penalties. No verbal announcement, no graphical mention at all. They gave microphones to NHL refs for a reason, shut up and let us hear the call.

I have to say, Miller and Cuthbert are really growing on me, and Hughson, despite brief lapses of inanity, is pretty easy on the ears too. I dearly love Bob Cole, but he's starting to fade; there are two or three times a game where he seems to get completely lost, and four or five more where he make pretty basic errors (identification, what penalty is called, etc.). Still, when he gets into a groove with a team he knows well, he's magical. Why oh why did he and Harry Neale part company...

I can't disagree more about Doc. He is as good as it gets, he loves the game, is a student of the game, and is one of the most eloquent sports broadcasters out there. And, look at the amazing work he did yesterday. His color guy couldn't make it to DC for the game, so he basically handled it on his own. I bet few noticed. That's how good he is. You've got to appreciate his historical knowledge and the background he can seemlessly dish out about players. He'll forever be remembered for "Crosby, with the game on his stick." That will be this generation's "do you believe in miracles? Yes!" The guy is an artist and an encyclopedia.

McGuire is easier to criticize. All I can say about him is that he's been charged with selling the game, and so that is what he does. His hero worship and hyperbole can be off putting, but not enough to make me dislike him. We're all better off if the game grows, and that is what he is trying to do--shill the game.

PSH, my issue with Doc is not a lack of knowledge or his love of the game. I don't like his use of "buzz words", some of his phrases, but mostly, i don't like the sound of his voice. To each, their own i guess.

You are correct on the point of anything that makes the game better, i'm all for it. I just don't see Versus or NBC really getting the job done correctly. Weekend games on NBC are a good thing. It gets the sport mainstream, when quite a few people are around the house. I just don't like the crew doing the games. Again, i'm spoiled having CBC. Thats what i grew up watching in Detroit for HNIC.

As for the Crosby comment about the game on his stick, a good choice of words, but a "quote for this generation" i think thats a bit of a stretch.

As far as American coverage goes, I think Doc is it. You're right about HNIC. I think the CBC productions, including the Hotstove and the like, are as good as ANY sports coverage gets.

Doc is ok but if I can avoid hearing him then I will. Perhaps I was spoiled growing up with Fred Cusick but noone holds a candle to the way he could do a game. Pierre McGuire may just be the most awful color man in the business. He is the only one out there that annoys me just by talking. His comments are useless and add nothing to the telecasts, regardless of which side of the border he's working on. Andy Brickley would be a much better choice for the NBC tilts.

I can't stand Emrick. Always going overboard trying to impress everyone with his hockey knowledge. We get it, Mike. You're "The Professor", and we're all your students. To me, he has the most annoying voice in hockey. I wish Gary Thorne and Bill Clement were back doing "National Hockey Night" together again.

As much as I like Thorne, he used to butcher names on a pretty regular basis.
