Sticks That Sting The Hands

Recommended Posts

This is something that really gets me because my left thumb is all effed up and it's also my bottom hand, so I notice it really easily. The two that come to mind immediately are the XN10 and One90. I also noticed it on a couple pro stock Eastons. Thoughts?

9K0 for me.

For me, this seems to happen more with stiffer sticks - just less give in the stick to cushion the blow. You might try a thicker tape job to soften the blow a bit, like an extra strip on the bottom edge before you wrap if striking the ice on slappers is what's stinging you, for example. Or double wrap, if the face is the source of the shock. I usethe BladeTape product and it seems to take the sting out of the face for blocking shots and catching stiff passes, although it doesn't do anything for the bottom edge, obviously, so I still get a bit of a sting when the stick strikes the ice on a slapshot. I've also heard some people tape over the BladeTape with a regular tape wrap so the BladeTape just provides extra cushion.

Any idea if the retail 808 is better? I have a pro stock 8 that I love and it doesn't sting but I dono if the retail will be the same in that regard.

The only sticks I've noticed this with lately are my RLXN10 shafts. They're X flex, though... it may be just that. Never had this issue with my RLXN10's, but they are S flex.

Noticed it today on my bottom hand using that Gomez pro stock CL. Maybe it's because I haven't taken 16 consecutive slap shots in a row in a long time though ;)

2010 easton ST! Makes my joints hurt too!

I'm surprised by that. I don't think the earlier versions bothered me at all, dono.

Yeah, it is weird, slap shots hurt with it! But slap shots with the one85 feel like butter! It is weird, the ST just beats me up and doesn't seem to load right for me either.

Never had that problem though I recall some guy whining like a little girl about his hands stinging after taking a shot. He was kinda lanky and was using a 110 flex Synergy.

Haven't really had the problem outside sticks that were too stiff (87 flex Vapor XX, TPS Rubber stiff flex, etc).

I always notice it if I left my sticks in the car all day in the winter. The cold makes the stick stiff and it stings until the stick warms up a little.

The last stick to sting my hands was when I was a Peewee using my old Easton Aluminums...

Oh god, learning to take slapshots was the worst.

EDIT: I also remember having a Vapor 4 shaft that was super stiff and stung pretty bad.

I get stingers with my Easton ST (it's an '09 model) on slappers, but it's also a 110 flex (yes, it's right for me) and I have been babied using various one pieces. I also never take slap shots (snappers and wristers for me), so it's only in warmups/coaching practices when I am horsing around and I notice it.

I have come to sort of expect it though, as this ST is a tank. It really takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'. If only the SE16s would come down further in price!

I need to find a retailer who sells .52 Cal sticks. Almost nowhere on the internet.

Play it again sports (at least in my area) have TONS of them.

ive got a 130 flex ccmvector 8 that killlls when taking shots haha. thought i broke my wrists after a few slappers

I'd say that has a lot more to do with the flex than the stick model.

I haven't found that true for myself, it's happened even on 85 flexes that I bend the hell out of. One possible factor is that I really do a pretty damn thin tapejob on the blade, that's just how I've always preferred it. Maybe I'll have to change that...

I live on Vancouver Island, no LHSs have any Combat sticks near me.

The hockey shop has .45 cals. Check your inbox as well. I went back to using my .52 cal on the weekend and I'm still pretty darn impressed with it.
