Crosby's stick

Recommended Posts

As others have said, that's not his real stick, lie, curve... anything. Reebok makes his pro-stock sticks, so they have a contract with him. This contract may entitle them to use his name/likeness on their products and advertising. His name on a stick helps sell them. This is the same for ALL manufacturers.

You guys are probably right. I just thought otherwise being the really high lie. I've only seen that lie on custom sticks and pro stocks so I didn't know what to think.

Not "probably" right. They ARE right. You should see how different Ovi's retail flat, open heel wedge is to that monstrous toe curve he actually uses.

Lol. No I've seen his curve. Straight heel, with a big toe hook at the end. I always do that for my street hockey sticks.

...and I believe he uses a low lie, like 4-4.5.

Yup, I can confirm he has atleast used a 4.5-ish in the past. Saw it in person.

No doubt they are right, unfortunately. What I want to know is WHY? I know some patterns exist through time with various player's names on them depending on who the current stars are and I get the marketing there. But for the real big stars, Crosby, Ovie, et al, why don't they sell us the actual curve the pro uses on the retail sticks? Every kid wants to play with their favorite star's stick, so what's wrong with giving them that choice? Why make us chase down pro stock sticks to get the actual player's curve? And also, was it always this way... like is that famous SWD Coffee curve anything like what Coffee actually used?

1. What works for an adult is frequently not going to work for a child.

2. Many pros change (tweak if you prefer) their curves regularly, should the manufacturer change their molds every time there is a change?

3. Why waste a marketable name on what is, quite possibly, a curve you couldn't give away?

All excellent points. Chadd has it exactly right why manufacturers don't do that.

If some people saw pros' true curves, they'd be shocked. Some of them are damn near unusable for most people.

Yeah, would have killed to shoot like MaCinnis, but I saw an actual picture of his curve and I doubt I could have hit the net with it from ten feet away.

I remember someone posting a pic of his curve here from a few years ago and it was nasty. It worked for him though.

not to mention that a lot of these guys play with illegal curves. during Kovalchuk's rookie year I was treated to a tour of the Thrashers practice facility. I stopped by the stick racks and picked up a right-handed stick with a curve that was practically 90 degrees. I asked Don Waddell, "who the hell plays with this???" and he replied, "that's Kovy's. we can't get him to play with a legal curve.". I'm pretty sure that even with USA Hockey relaxing the rules a bit it would still be illegal.

I know Hartley told the equipment guys to stop accepting the illegal ones at one point.

I can't tell if that is left handed or right handed. lol. I assume left handed.

I'm not going to even go find out on Google. I'll just let it be a mystery to me.

I think it's actually a righty. That's what makes it even more out-there!
