Is It Really Worth it wearing a visor at a Junior A level?

Recommended Posts

When you play Pro, of course you will wear a visor but is it really worth it wearing one when you play Juniors A hocckey???

Actually I beg to disagree, when you play pro, you can afford not to wear one, because you will get inmediate dental assistance or any medical care, but when you play for hobby, oh man, thats a different story. If you have never seen a guy lose a whole bunch of teeth during practice, or the ice full of blood, you might think differently, but my opinion is hockey without protection is great and comfortable... until you get hit

Well Jr. A is borderline hobby/future in hockey. I was a firm believer that the cage doesn't really restrict visibility until I went on the ice to play hockey without one, then put the cage on, and felt totally blind. If you feel that the extra vision will improve your game, then wear a visor. Otherwise, wear a cage.

If you're used to a cage, stick with it. If a real scout tells you that you're going to be in the AHL/NHL soon, go ahead and switch to the glass.

I wore a visor until 2 weeks ago when a buddy of mine almost lost his eye. Pretty scary stuff, I was the first guy to his side and when i looked under his visor, all I could see was blood, no eye. Brutal.

But yeah, if I played highly competitive hockey, I'd play with a visor for sure.

My cage is okay for adult hockey but it still sucks ass. I just don't wanna come back home to my kids with an eye missing

Wear what your comfortable with for now. Cage seems to work ok for NCAA guys that ended up making the pros.

They wear them because they have to. I am sure there would be some holdouts who might still wear a cage but if the NCAA didn't require them to wear cages then most would wear visors. Although you are right, cages don't restrict visibility so much that it just can't work at higher levels.

LoL in toronto I'm pretty sure most first year rookies have to wear cages before they can wear visors which isn't a bad thing besides knowing who are the vets and who are the rooks..

I went for years without a cage, because like was said above, cages are for ...

Until one day...

I had 4 surgeries over 2 years to put my lip and nose back together, including cartilage taken out of my rib (for my nose)

I would never play without a cage now. It can happen to anyone, anytime, not worth it

If youre playing for something...sure, wear a visor. If youre like 99% of the hockey playing population that is not, then wear a cage.

Ask anyone that had a serious accident that could have been avoided had they been wearing a cage, and I imagine they will tell you that it was not worth it. Hell, earlier tonight I got hit by an errant stick in the bottom of my cage...

Ive went from a cage to no protection a few years ago. the increase in visibility was great, and having a cage back on was no fun. However, I got used to it again.

What team were you trying out/playing for?

You have to wear those big ass aviator ones that are more or less worthless. If you wouldn't get hardcore chirped I'd wear the fishbowl.

Saying that its pretty much required to wear the visor so you can A) look cool. B) not get chirped. C) tell who is 18 and who is not.

Look, if you don't want to wear a cage, ok. Just that after you take that slapshot from the point deflected in your puss and you're spitting chiclets all over the ice with blood pouring out, get off the ice, because now you are holding up the game!

BTW, take a look at Duncan Keith during every interview after he lost his teeth. That is a look I'm sure the puck bunnies go for.

I think all of us adults realize that its taking a huge risk and probably not worth it. But when you're 18, 19 years old playing in a city you're not from, your main goals is to a) become noticed by scouts to get a D1 scholie, B) get laid, c) have fun with your team, d) party. (totally varies by the kid's ambitions and location of team, but you get the idea). At that age if you can wear a visor, you wear the visor. the puck sluts can see your smile, and you do get chirped if you don't wear one if you are over 18. yeah its pretty stupid, but at that age you don't care about your safety (like adults do) because you're young, the world is in front of you.

Buddy, Duncan Keith could pull more tail with no teeth than you probably can on your best day.

No shit, Sherlock. Only problem is you or me are not and never will be Duncan Keith.

I've had to many close calls and sticks to the face to ever consider not wearing a cage. I've used both and even though the visor is better with a visor, the security of the cage gives me added comfort when blocking a shot or crashing the net

Agree with this quote 100%

I've had a cage all this time playing Juniors. Not because i was a puss but because i didn't trust these 15 year olds swinging around there sticks. Now that im overseas and playing REAL Hockey its a must have. Plus, didn't have insurance when i was playing Juniors.
