My BASE Stick

Recommended Posts

True, but I didn't expect these kind of prices or options or getting product out this fast.

Definitely. I remember calling them early september. They were already pretty busy, and they hadn't even technically opened(Burnaby facility).

Got word from Base that my stick has finally arrived after being delayed in customs. Looking forward to picking it up in the next couple of days and having a chat with Al Iafrate!

I understand the interest, cause everyone likes new sticks, but I'm curious as to why the "average joe's" here are paying a fair amount of money for an essentially unreviewed and untested product, especially when there's so many good sticks out there.

Maybe a few objective reviews (not by people who have paid for them) would be in the company's interest, if indeed they've got a solid product offering....?

Price and the options are quite attractive in my opinion. If you are only looking at retail sticks, the price is attractive. Top of the line sticks are around 200 or more. You could get some sticks on clearance or pro stocks, but you need to find sticks that fit your flex, curve, etc preferences.

For me, it's because of the fact that you have tons of customization options. Closest thing to that I think was Bauer ID and this offers a good bit more options. Also I'm really interested in their custom fitting procedure, I look forward to trying that out in the near future. They also say that this is a top of the line stick for mid like price, and some people have agreed to that. And like Scotty said, there are minds behind Easton and Warrior, so you'd like to think they have something to offer.

When it's founded by Ron Kunisaki, who started Innovative Hockey, I'm sure they know what they're doing.

I'm giving them a shot because of not only the customization (being able to get a true toe curve was a selling point), but the pricing and the people behind the company give it potential. I've got high hopes for the sticks and if they perform anything like my Dolomite or ST I'll be very happy with them. Since these are fused sticks I know if the blades break I can use them as shafts as well. For me, it was worth the risk to try them out. Worst case scenario is I eat some of the cost and sell them to someone else. I've wasted plenty more money on dumber purchases before.

I'm not saying that this applies to everyone here but a big part of it is to be first/have something others don't have. Customization is also a big factor, even for those that buy something that ends up the same specs as a retail stick. Look at the skate topics we've had, a lot of people want custom skates, even if they don't need them.

I wouldn't expect them to send any/many sticks out for testing. 1. They're already getting good word of mouth and 2. there really aren't many places that can provide truly impartial testing.

Quick question...is there anywhere to find out what options and curves are available for the sticks? I haven't seen anything on either their website or Facebook page. Is there a link out there, or am I best to e-mail them direct?

E-mail them and they will send you a pdf with all the options.

Is it just me, or is this an ass backwards way to do business? If it's just a PDF, why not make it available for download on the website?

My speculation is that they are collecting email addresses, and adding them to those that sign up via the website.

A website is supposed to be informative and complete, their site is just one step above a placeholder page. Brutal.

Well, they want you to call them. If you actually call them, you get into a pretty informative discussion with them. Also keep in mind that they did just start up, they're busy enough with their factory, fittings, publicity etc. to worry about the website for now.

IMO. An informative website should be top priority in these days as far as marketing and publicity go. 95% of the time when someone hears about a new company or an interesting product... they google it. 95% of that time the google search returns the companies website. If it's not done and professional looking it gives people a bad taste.

Agreed. I'm still waiting to hear back from them, I sent them an email two days ago.

It's the weekend, I'd expect that they will email you back tomorrow.

Definitely agree with that, but I'd cut them just a teeny bit of slack. I'm not too sure bout this, but how many other companies have started with a customization program, whereas others have had them come into the equation later. But at least they started some stuff on twitter and facebook??

With the big names behind the product, low prices, fast turnaround, customization, and (so far) good word of mouth, it doesn't surprise me at all to see people jumping on them.

Just to update, the one stick expelled some more epoxy after its second ice session, and a small thumb's worth of sharkskin coating is gone on its forehand heel. On the other stick, a portion of the graphics are wearing away on the backhand side of the shaft roughly where my bottom hand sits on slappers. I suppose the sharkskin wearing could be slightly more than cosmetic.

Still feel good performance wise?

Edit: Ahhh that's probably a really stupid question, it's only the second ice time...unless something did come up?

Glad to see I'm not the only one that sees it that way.

If they actually want people to call them so they can talk for a while, they won't be around all that long. Their method of assembling sticks is already more labor (and cost) intensive than mass produced sticks from the major manufacturers, adding long conversations into the mix only makes it worse.

Definitely agree with that, but I'd cut them just a teeny bit of slack. I'm not too sure bout this, but how many other companies have started with a customization program, whereas others have had them come into the equation later. It's their niche. The market is already saturated with small brands, they would get lost in the clutter if they didn't have some catch. Especially since they aren't doing retail.

Is there clear coat over the graphics or were they just put on top of the stick?

Post third ice-time, though both of those instances cropped up after the second. Every vital quality of the stick remains the same as my first skate. If these sticks' performance crapped out after five hours on ice that would certainly be something to report.

I went with the matte finish, so there's nothing. I'm thinking the matte led to some of the lackluster fit and finish regarding aesthetics.

I don't really think you should have to do this, and that the company could just as easily provide this option compared to the normal clear coating... but you could give your stick a coat of this stuff
